Saigh Indicted
On Income Tax
Evasion Charges
St. Louis (U.R) Fred F. Saigh
Jr., president of the St. Louis
Cardinals, said Wednesday he
"cannot understand" why a fed
eral grand Jury indicted him on
five charges of Income tax
evasion.
Saigh, a 47-year-old lawyer
who made a quick fortune in real
estate deals prior to buying con
trol of the National league club
in 1949, was charged with evad
ing taxes on personal and corpo
rate income of $108,823.
The first two counts of the In
dictment charged him with sign
ing false returns on personal in
come and failing to pay taxes of
$13,262 In 1946 and $14,351 in
1947.
The third count accuses Saigh,
as vice-president of the Cardi
nals, of falsely listing corporate
Income of $1,440,497 in 1948 in
stead of the true figure of $1
463,275 and of paying $8,655 less
taxes than the baseball club
owed.
The fourth and fifth cout.ts
said that Saigh filed joint re
turns on his home and his wife's
personal income for the years
1948 and 1949, and debated the
correctness of the tax payments
he made lor those years $8,604
In 1948 and $4,748 in 1949.
Saigh was in Cincinnati at
tending a game between the
Cards and Reds Tuesday night
when he was told of the indict
ments. He left his box at Crosley
field and flew back to St. Louis.

Federal Funds Said
Possible for New
City Fire Equipment
The Medford city council was
told last night there is a possi
bility of obtaining federal funds
to assist in purchasing fire fight
ing equipment for Medford,
through the civilian defense pro
gram. Correspondence with Col. C.
E. Stafford, county civil defense
director, has indicated that il
federal funds are granted by re
quest of the city through the
CD agency, it would amount
to about 50 per cent of the
amount for needed equipment.
Councilmen indicated the need
for about $4,000 in minor equip
ment such as new hoses, and a
$12,000 pumper truck.
Secondary Target
Councilman John Snider
stated that the possibility of
obtaining such aid appears to
be good because Medford has
been designated "a secondary
target area" by civil defense
headquarters.
In other business, the council
authorized Mayor D. L. Flynn
and Snider, as chairman of the
airport committee, to attend re
tirement ceremonies for Gen.
Junius Jones Saturday, April 25,
at McClellan field, Calif. Coun
cilman Harold Frye, and others,
pointed out that the city has re
ceived "wonderful cooperation"
from General Jones during the
time he has been commandant
of the air force air material
command.
The council also authorized
Vernon Thorpe, public works
superintendent, to act lor City
Superintendent Robert Duff dur
ing this week. Duff is attending
a Pacific northwest sectional
meeting of the American Water
Works association in Spokane.
He is an official of the associa
tion. Paving Approved
Paving of Haven street from
Summit to Oak streets was ap
proved by the council following
a public hearing at which no
opposition was voiced to the
project.
The council called for bids
on 10 paving projects. They in
cluded Peach street from Dakota
to Stewart avenues, Dakota ave
nue from Plum to Hamilton
streets, Third street from Ivy
to Grape streets, Fifth street
from Oakdale avenue to Grape
street, Wilson place from East
wood to Keeneway drives, Grant
street from Dakota to Stewart
avenues, Washington street from
West Main to West 10th street,
Haven street from Summit to
Oak street and from Columbus
