SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, April 20, 1951 Convention Notables Cautioned to Dress Right for Television New York U.R Green, blue and pink shirts with gray or tan uits and pancake Number Five makeup for bald spots will be the rule for political stars at the Democratic and Republican na tional conventions and all be cause of television. An estimated 80,000,000 Americans will be looking in on the two big shows at Chicago in July, and television's foremost makeup experts warned that such errors as appearing In a striped seersucker suit could be Just at harmful as a bad speech to the candidates. Do's, Don'ii Llil.d They laid down a list of "dos" and "dont's" as rigid as a party platform, including an outright ban on white, black and yellow. All four networks will have authorities on T-V makeup read ily available for candidates and other bigwigs who want their services. In advance, however, they dropped these hints. A delegate will do well to get his hair cut one week before con vention time, no more and no less. Only actors, they said, can get by with that shaggy look, and a brand new trim leaves too sharp a dividing line. Btripad Suits Out The list of don'ts included just as firm a rejection of any striped uits, but particularly those in which the contrast is between harp white and coal black. They explained that such a suit makes an Image on the T-V screen which shivers like a delegate left out in the cold. Solid black also is frowned on because it produces a shimmering "halo around the edges. Yellow and whita do the same thing, only in reverse, so the halo looks a drab shade of gray. Lavradar Shirts Approved The happy colors for men's hirti arc green, blue and pink. Lavender isn't bad, either, al thoug tha experts freely agreed they didn't expect to see candi dates show up in many purple nirts. Their top recommenda tion was: "A light gray suit with a blue shirt, dark tie with no 'Jiggly' or small dotted patterns and shoes with not too much of a polish." In general, the starts of the convention will be well advised to wear a minimum of makeup, because the experts feel too good a job could make a stalwart can didate for the White House look more like a matinee charmer. Face powder will be dark and applied lightly, to eliminate five- o clock shadow. Gen. Dwlght D. Elsenhower, If he attends the GOP meetings, will have to have some dark powder rubber on his head, be cause bald spots glisten much too vividly and take Interest way from what the speaker is laying. The same suntan shades will also be applied to such notable scalps as Sen. Robert Taft's and Gov. Adlal Steven son's.
