1 SOC Faculty Follies 'Extravaganza' Set Later This Week Ashland The first annual Faculty Follies, presented by members of the staff at South ern Oregon college, will be pre sented at 8:15 p.m. in Churchill hall, on the SOC campus. Thurs day, Friday and Saturday. The "extravaganza" has been termed "one of the most unique cultural activities ever to be presented in the valley," accord ing to a high-powered publicity campaign conducted by Robert L. Edwards, SOC instructor in Journalism. The follies will be on a "high Intellectual plane," Edwards has reported, and the cast has obtained the loan of three bales of hay to give the proper setting. The stage event is modeled on a "San Francisco Culture Tour" theme, taking-off the quarterly visits made by students to the Bay city. Edwards quoted Producing Di rector Leon C. Mulling as say ing that "valley residents who have the fortitude to sit through the hour and half show will auto matically become eligible to re ceive an honorary degree as doc tor of hilarity at the 1975 com mencement." Final dress rehearsal is set for this afternoon. The production will include 17 acts of "drama, music and corn," Edwards' advance notices say. He added: "An Intermission has been scheduled early in the perform ance for the convenience of pa trons who are unable to stand any more, although the aisles will be kept clear at all times." Transformer Failure Failure of a transformer near Bear Creek orchards on Highway 99 sduth of Medford at 7:25 a.m. today resulted in a power outage in the area be tween Medford and Phoenix, California Oregon Power com' pany officials reported this morning. April IS. 1J51 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FTVK "Very good" was the repeated comment by. a chattery half filled house at the Vining reper tory's first spring season produc tion of "Claudia" in Ashland's Lithia theater last night. The play, which involves lovable but dense creature named Claudia, concerns itself with the struggle of creating a woman out of a child encircled by a "mother image." Claudia's refreshing approach to life when it concerns some of the baser drives of the human race pro vides the effective comedy ele ment to which the audience heartily responded. Correct Nonsense" Miss Elmarie Wendel, In the leading role, was well-equipped via voice and mannerisms to convey the part in its fullest. Her husky, well-modulated vocie was embellished with provoca tive stage movements and head gestures which gave the correct amount of nonsense to her in terpretation. She, indeed, was Claudia as Rose Franken intend ed her. H. Paul Kliss gave his well- known smooth, urbane and de lightfully bored interpretation of Claudia s understanding hus band. Miss Clara Margaret Daniels again displayed her competency in a matronly role and lent a professional sureness to the unique acting company. Striking Figures Mrs. Barbara Curtis was a striking figure as Julia who brought the weirr1 creation of Madame Daruschka, a broken down Russian version of a Wag nerian soprano, into the house hold of Claudia and David. Mrs. Suzanne LaMarre Hanson gave the latter part the works, com plete with an accent, with ges tures, and blocked - up heels straight from Carmen Miranda's shoe closet. Eddy Barron was an English man without much of an accent. This one improvement would complete an otherwise good portrayal. Mrs. Kitty Ingle and Brad Curtis play two rather plain characters that take care of Claudia's home. Both slow down their parts to a turtle's pace and give effective studies in hired help. The tempo of the production is never rowdy, as it surely could be in several actions. Di rector Philip Hanson interpreted the production in a mild manner and evidently stressed a light comedy vein which is never des tined to get bogged down in the more serious tones of the pro duction. By emphasizing this tempo In each of the scenes, Hanson achieved a continuity that provided an excellent eve ning of good light comedy on an adult level. H. N. Teitelbaum Home Loses Valuables Miami Beach, Fla. (U.R) Three armed robbers stripped the swank winter home of Chi, cago lawyer Abraham Teitel baum Tuesday night of "thou- sands of dollars" worth of furs, jewelry and other valuables, The attorney, who figured in recent Washington hearings into government corruption, was at a movie with his wife wheft the robbery occurred. Police said the bandits forced their way into the home when a Negro maid, Thelma Thomas, opened the door. They took the maid and the xeueiDHum s six-year-uia aaugn ter, Elizabeth, upstairs, locked the child in the bathroom and ripped bed sheets to tie and gag the maid. Probers Unable To Explain Cause Of Bomber Crash Spokane U.R) Air Force In vestigators Wednesday dug through the smoldering rubble of a B-36 intercontinental bomb er that crashed and exploded near here Tuesday, killing IS of 17 men aboard. Cause Unexplained Officers said they were unable ; to explain the explosion of the faltering air giant after it had crashed while taking off in the pre-dawn darkness with possibly 21,000 gallons of gasoline aboard. "Flames from the plane scorch ed a five-acre circle around the twisted wreckage a mile east of the Fairchild AFB runway and eight miles west of here in a wheat field. Eighth Crash It was the eighth B-38 crash since the globe-girdling bomber began rolling off the Convair assembly line. Capt. Cecil Alldredge, pilot of the ill-fated bomber, also was In command of another B-36 that crashed while landing at Fair child January 29 and burned. All of the crew escaped from that plane, however.
