FOUH MEDFOHD (OHEGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wedneiday. April It. 19S1 ,.. .aa4rn J v. "IT'S BECOME A POISON" Capt. Jerome M. Schechter, ihown with his wife, Maralynn, and their pet dog, is one of six officer veterans at Mather Air Force Base, Calif., who face possible court martial for refusal to fly again. Six other officers have refused to fly at Randolph Air Force Base, Tex. Schechter said he refused to fly for his country again because "it's something that'i devel oped into a poison for me." On The Side by e. v. Durimg (Diitrlbuted by King Feature! Syndicate, Inc.) Darling, I bring to you this ring, Made for your finger fll To ahow by thli that our love Is, Or ihould be, like to It. Thlj rlnr li round, and nowhere found To flaw, or else to lever, So let our love as endless prove And pure as gold forever. llerrick. Childless couples should not give up hope too soon. That's what I recently said in referring to a couple I know who had their first child after 16 years of mar riage. That was a long wait but not to be compared to that of the Geyers of Pittsburgh. They re cently had their first child after 27 years of marriage. Addition ally remarkable is the fact that when Mrs. Geyer became a mother for the first time she was 51 years old. Her husband is 84. One Pittsburgh physician stated at the time he had officiated in over 25.000 births and the oldest mother in his experience was 48 years old. In a Few Words It was Damon Runyon who said: "The race is not olways to said: "The race Is not always to Btrons. but that's the way to bet." Arnold Bennett advised: "Make love to every woman you meet; If you get five per cent on your outlay, its a good Invest ment." Observed Ed Howe: "If you want to know how old woman is, ask her sister-in-law. Mules and Man That brilliant and smart look ing literary lady, Kathryn Cra vens, has written a gay novel titled "Pursuit of Gentlemen." In this are offered quite a few helpful hints on man handling. Miss Cravens is also the author of some advice titled "Ten Com mandments for Trapping a Man." Space does not permit re penting this in full. However, the second commandment strong ly recommends the clinging vine technique. The sixth command ment reads: "Don't worry about what a dress docs for you. It's what it does to the man that counts." It has long been our policy to offer bachelor subscrib ers methods of defense for the various "man trapping tech niques. Our experts can suggest a good defense for Miss Cravens' second enmmnnrimcnt. However, her sixth is a bnfflcr. It Is ex tremely difficult for a normal man to defend himself against what might be called the "plung ing neckline" technique. Off hand, nil I can think of is to sug gest he wear blinkers. And, of course, for a man to wear blink ers when calling on a girl might look a little silly. Curve Balls The distinguished publisher and poet, Wilfred Funk, Is really mm SQFTj WHITE ( STRONG a stubborn guy. He still wants to argue with me about curving a baseball. Says he Is not ready to admit a baseball can be curv ed. That it is an "optical illu sion." If that is a fact, my eyes certainly have deceived me on many an occasion. In addition to facing many curve ball pitchers as a player, I sat, as a baseball writer, directly behind the catch' er in the old Polo Grounds press box when it was on a level with the field. There is only one thing to do with this fellow Funk. Let him put up his stogies. Then we will get a curve ball pitcher and siow motion camera and see who is right, Chimes When you press the button at the door of Ezio Pinza's house in Stamford, Conn., chimes start playing: "Some Enchanted Eve ning." That is an interesting Idea. I suppose if Eddie Cantor had chimes in his mansion they would play "If You Knew Su sie, Bing Crosby's "I Surrender Dear," Georgie Jessel's "Oh, How I Laugh When I Think How I Cried About You," Sophie lucKer s "Some of These Days Future of Uranium As Fuel Supply Great Washington U.R) One pound of uranlum-235, the basic "fuel" of atomic power, irf equal In en ergy to 2.600,000 pounds of coal. U. S. officials estimate that there Is 10 times more energy In the world's uranium deposits than in all its coal and oil re sources combined. One hundred tons of U-235 theoretically could generate all the electricity used by the Unit ed States in an entire year. Seek To Perfect Machinei So it is no wonder that the United States, Great Britain, and Canada are striving to per feet machines for turning all this atomic energy into electric Dower, Gordon Dean, chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and others have predicted that the atom will be producing com mercial power in five to 10 years. Does that mean an atomic Uto pia is Just around the corner? The experts say no Except in countries where coal and other conventional fuel costs are extremely high, atomic pow er may not be commercially com petitive for 25 years or more. More Precious Than Gold Atomic engines cost $25,000, 000 to $50,000,000. Atomic fuel is far more precious than gold. And though there is a lot of uranum in the world, easily ex- riloitable deDOsits are rare Nevertheless atomic power Is worth shooting for. Both the United States and Great Britain are working on atomic engines sir? Is there any song that has figured largely in your life? Or how about a song appropriate to the occasion of a visit such as "You're Welcome as the Flowers in May." Guess that is a little corny. Still, It would please your mother-in-law. tJ t. Um.M It was recently reported here the men topping the garment in dustry have been asking other men to ask their wives for criti cisms on the current styles for women. This situation is appar ently viewed with scornful amusement by many women. "Why don't they ask the women directly?" comments a Manhat tan matron. "I can tell them one thing, women who take size 20, as I do, are shamefully neglect ed In the matter of clothes of fered by retail establishments. There is also room for much im provement in the styles. Most of the clothes offered cover vou. And so on. But how about you, but do nothing els for you." for warship and the United Slates is developing atom-powered aircraft. What if such engines are costly? The military value of the tremendous ranges and high speeds promised by atomic power it not to be gauged by or dinary economic considerations. One medical authority has a mathematical formula for de termining the Influence of obes ity on longevity for every inch the waist measurement exceeds the chest measurement deduct two years of the present life ex pectancy.
