Open Sunday and Evening 520,000,000 Building Program Scheduled To Go Before Legislature By WILLIAM WARREN Salem (U.R) A $20,000,000 building program to bring Ore gon state institutions reasonably up to date will be proposed to the 1053 legislature by the State Board of Control. The program, disclosed by Sec- TRUCKING SERVICE LOCAL - LONG DISTANCE HEAVY HAULING Machinery - Cats - Shovels, Etc. Newbry, will include a million dollar maximum security building probably between the state hos pital and nearby state prison, to house the criminally insane and sex deviates who have been ad judged by courts and doctors as immediately incurable. Matter of Protection Reason for including the sex deviates in this maximum and indefinite security program, of ficials said, is not primarily a matter of punishment for them but primarily a matter of pro tection of the public from them. They are the ones who get driv en to such fanatic deviation that they wind up killing a little child. The Idea is to isolate them from society before they com mit murder instead of waiting, as in the past, until after they commit murder. The program proposed by the board would extend over a pe riod of 10 years at the rate of some $2,000,000 a year. High on the priorities would be two new cottages at Fairview home for the mentally deficient, now so overcrowded there is a waiting list of 253 including 75 babies under three years of age. Other Buildings Planned Other buildings would be at the state schools for the blind and for the deaf at Salem, Mac Laren boys school at Woodburn, state tuberculosis hospital here, eastern Oregon Tuberculosis hos pital at The Dalles and eastern Oregon State hospital for the mentally 111 at Pendleton. Hill crest school for girls here Is re ported at present in compara tively good shape. At The Dalles, surgery facilities would be estab lished at a cost of $400,000. QUESTIONS ANSWERS I sent for the pamphlet on Tinnitus and Deafness, particularly the exer cises "Make a Face and Hear Better." which some readers reported had stopped their snoring. But I never re ceived it. 1 am trying once more, as my husband . . . I Mrs. M. A. C.) Anise r Thank you for your patience. There are, after all, reasons why a letter may not reach me or my reply may not reach the correspond ent. It is not always because I swipe the postage stamp or the money. The pamphlet TINNITUS AND DEAF NESS is on the way. Tinnitus means head noises. The exercises described in the pamphlet have Improved the hearing in many instances and some readers discovered that systematic performance of the exercises correct ed snoring too. However, it takes one of high 1 Q to follow the exercises regularly enough. Xnuckleheada dis miss the idea as too silly. We also realize that the causes of Periodonto clasia are com plex and may h. alltic. Inml Dr. Brady or systemic . . . You surprise me that you write such a scathing article as that of Monday, Feb. 4, titled 'The Pyor rhea Obsession'." In the Feb. 4 outburst I said It is high time for patients, den tists and physiciuns to acquire a little common sense Instead of the pseudo-scientific buncombe that has long obscured the sub ject of "pyorrhea" and hat it is my observation that dentists know little about the nature, cause, prevention and treatment of the condition they call "pyor rhea" and physicians know even less. With due appreciation for the professional courtesy of the den tist who chides me for such com ment I now ask permission to modify or amend the comment to read: ". . . the condition they call Periodontoclasia with a cap ital P." And in a way I feel I'm a so-and-so to use the dentist's letter in this column, even though no one can learn the dentist's Identity un less the dentist himself or herself wishes to reveal it. The dentist begins his or her letter with a statement which as nearly implies approval as any I have ever received from a den tist: "Your daily column has long been followed by me with inter est and I have enjoyed some of the viewpoints you express in j regard to dental health." I read that over two or three times, hoping to get a wee drop of grati- J fication out of it, but had to give up. It doesn't matter what I say in this column or elsewhere about dentists and dentistry, the dentists do not like me very j well.
