(International) Babson Talks Job Outlook rS BY ROGER W. BABSON Babson Park, Mass., April 11 (Special To Mail Tribune) Headlines about unemployment in certain sec tions such as Detroit and New Bedford have made de pressing read ing. Events, however, are sometimes mora import ant than sta tistics. I, for one have been greatly encour aged by the recent withdrawal of President Truman from the race. My more optimistic feeling comes from the fact that a num ber of the other contestants for the Presidency are more con servative than Is Mr. Truman. And a more conservative out look 1 whatiWe need to encour age capital Investment, which la the source of all jobs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there has been a decline In employement In such Industries as clothing, food, lumber and textiles. In the cloth ing Industry there are about 60,000 fewer jobs today than a year ago. Likewise, there are about 65,000 fewer food jobs, 20, 000 fewer lumber, and 75,000 fewer textile jobs. The answer to the unemployed worker In a consumer-goods in dustry Is a Job In a defense In dustry. By late 1952, It may be difficult indeed for the consumer-goods Industry to find lald-off workers. They may have been snapped up by defense industries and paid wages that consumer foods companies will find diffi cult to meet. Beit Bels for Jobs In Defense Industrie Best job bets for 1952 will be In the defense industries, al though, In the long run, more secure employment is to be found in consumer-goods indus tries. The production jobs today on the increase are in such in dustries as heavy machinery, metals, chemicals, and paper to mention a few. For example, there are today 200,000 more jobs in machinery plants than there were a year ago, about 100,- 3 FOR 1952 Only OOLENS Power-Ho DaLux Garden Tractor gives you OvMr HHchlnf fanhr, Short lum ' e Simpler Opvrotlaa e SmMttw tnwo4f9 lent Um 75a it 5 Extra Valut Features to do More Jobs Fatter and Easier Prove It to yoariclf. Transportation equipment and materials handling manufactur ers are employing about 160,000 more people The college senior with a me chanical or electrical engineer ing degree is In very short sup ply now and can, therefore, al most write his own contractl A recent survey of 125 companies reveals they will offer beginning engineers salaries ranging from $225 to $500. Manufacturing companies expect to hire more non-technical college graduates this year than last with starting salaries ranging from $300 per month upwards. Best bets for the non-technical graduate will be in the accounting and manu facturing fields. Salaries for the college senior in 1952 will be about 10 higher than those offered to the 1051 graduates! Increase In Earnings Should Increase Savings What does this picture mean to the United States? Actually, there Is a boom today In certain Jobs compared with the boom in stocks of 1929. Employment is high. Savings are above normal. Wages may rise another $15 billion, from $165 billion this year to about $180 billion next. After increased taxes, this could mean about an $8 billion increase in people s earnings, and should further increase savings. The cost - of - living, however, has reached present highs because most people are doing as little work as possible for their cur rent high wages. We are experiencing' a "wage workers' prosperity;" but some day this wage bubble will burst as have the stork market bubbles Expert on Burns Frostbite Check San Antonio, Tex. U.F9 Dr. Karl Eric Hogeman, a Swedish surgeon who specializes in the treatment of burns, is traveling across the United States check ing on something that sounds en tirely different but isn't frost bite. .Frostbite and burns are closely allied. Both are injuries of the skin caused by extremes in tem perature. Some Connection "I have long had an Idea that there is some connection be tween them," Dr. Hogeman said. "On my trip to this country, I am talking with specialists in both conditions to learn what I can about them." Dr. Hogeman, while in San Antonio, conferred with Lt. Col Robert B. Lewis at the Air Force school of aviation medicine in San Antonio. Col. Lewis, head of the depart ment of pathology at the school, won the Wellcome military medi cine award last year for his re search on fast-warming of frost bitten flesh. Dr. Hogeman want ed to take a bit of his findings back to Sweden. Plastic Surgeon A plastic surgeon with a pri vate practice in Stockholm, Dr. Hogeman joined the University of Lund in Malmo, where he is opening a center for the treat ment of skin injuries. Hfe visit to the United States is something of a first-aid mis sion. In case of war, in which it is entirely possible that Swe den will have an atomic attack, Dr. Hogeman and his assistants want to be well-briefed on skin injuries resulting from radiation burns. Adelaide, Australia (U.R) A train guard had to hail a bus and chase his train to the next stop after he was left standing on a suburban platform. The driver of the train was hauled off at the next stop and arrested for drunkenness. of the past. Americans should realize this and begin to save for the rainy day. The wage earner ought to plan to buy a little life insurance, then purchase a home, and build up savings accounts. There never was a better time for the graduate of any school or college to get started on a job. Business and government des perately need men who can think, who have learned how to get along with people, and who nave such character trails as faith, integrity, self-relance, In itiative, drive, and good health. But young people must do much better work than they are now doing in order to hold their jobs when business again declines. However, as I said above, I am feeling more optimistic now be cause there is a chance that the political pendulum may be swinging toward common sense, away from nonsense! Spain Seen Valuable Ally Because of Anti-Red Stand Dublin (U.PJ An Irish dele gate who called on the Council of Europe to support Spanish membership In Western defense has repeated bis urgent advice to the West that Spain would be a valuable ally because lt Is "overwhelmingly antl - Commu nist." Former Senator James Cros bie renewed his warnings given at the last session in Strasbourg of the European Consulative As sembly In an interview with the United Press. He noted that amongst the so cialist representatives at the Council of Europe there was a distinct hostility towards Span ish participation in Western de fense plans. Asked for his attitude towards Spain's proper role, Crosble said: Surely It is perfectly obvious that Spain Is overwhelmingly anti-Communist and has given every indication that she is pre pared to suppress Communism within her own frontiers, and also to resist Communist aggres sion from outside." Socialists Hostile He added: "It therefore would appear to be improvident for the rest of free Europe to spurn the political, economic and military support of Spain." Discussing the general atti tude towards Spain at the as sembly meetings, Crosbie stressed that "amongst the so cialist representatives at the Council of Europe there was a distinct hostility towards Span ish participation In Western de fense." Explaining their attitude, Crosbie went on: "This may arise from the remains of bitter feelings on the Spanish civil war and perhaps also from a cer tain amount of misunderstand ing of the Spanish problems and the difficulties which face the present regime within Spain. "It is admitted that under the terms of the statute of the j Council of Europe, Spain does i not qualify for membership. But the question would seem to be, therefore: Should the rest of Europe lose a valuable ally for the sake of mere formula in gov ernmental machinery? Suggests War Out "A way out of this Impasse could possibly be reached if the Franco government were to rati fy and put into effect the Coun cil of Europe's convention of hu man rights. "When we talk of democratic government it must be realized that the forms of democracy which exist in those countries constituting the Council of Eu rope did not always exist and In given cases only grew up after centuries of struggle and en deavor. "A case In point would be Great Britain herself, where the struggle started with Magna Charta and continued until the HE OWNS THE PLACE Knoxville, Tenn.
