Medford Iiitnhewr for President Committee 'Clean7 Land Best For Growing Seed For Certification Growers should make sure land on which they intend to plant is eligible for certification before buying and planting high priced seedstock, County Exten sion Agent W. B. Tucker stated today. Land requirements are an important part of seed certi fication, he said. Certification rules include re strictions on field history to pre vent contamination by volunteer plants from previous crops, ac cording to the county agent. In order to avoid crop mixtures, a certified field must not have grown a different variety of the certified crop for one or more years, Tucker explains. Clean Field, Clean Seed One of the best ways to pro duce clean seed is to begin with a clean field, he adds. Most leg ume seed crops are inspected in the seedling stage for certifica tion in Oregon. The main reasons for this seedling inspection are to check for volunteer crop plants nad for proper field iso lation. Fields must be free of volunteer plants of the crop to be grown for certification. Tucker suggests that, in order (o avoid expensive mistakes, growers should study certifica tion rules carefully. Complete rules for certification are on file in the county agent's office. Man Finds Stranger Meant What He Said Spokane (U.R) Eugene J. La velle told police this story: He was walking in a down town area minding his own busi ness when a hefty stranger stop ped him. The stranger said, "Don't say a word or I'll punch you in the nose." "Go ahead," Lavelle replied. Lavelle received emergency treatment for a deep cut on his nose and forehead. Bricks in Front Yard End Man's Retirement Memphis, Tenn. (U.R) A min ing bonanza in his own front yard brought 80-year-old Tony Battalia out of retirement. -'Battalia dropped his life of lei sure to become a brick miner. Battalia was leveling out his yard when he struck a brick. He kept digging and presently had uncovered over 3,000. Battalia isn't sure whether it's an old brick wall. He thinks his lot once was the site of brick yard. Anyway, common bricks bring $35 a thousand. The first lap on the run is a 515-mile, 13-hour drive to Grand Canyon, where the contestants will spend the night while the cars are kept under guard. The second day will be an even longer haul, 575 miles in 14 hours to Salt Lake City. Long Trips Wednesday's trip into Sun Val ley will cover 325 miles in eight hours. On arrival at Sun Valley the drivers will have traveled a total of 1,415.4 milei in 35 hours driving time. In addition to the driver, each car will ' carry a relief driver, American Automobile associa tion observer and one other pas senger. The observers are Cali fornia Institute of Technology engineering students deputized by the AAA to see that the rules are obeyed. Elaborate arrangements have been made with authorities in all four states to smooth the way for the automobile entourage. The cars will stop for refueling at Blythe, Williams, Marble Can yon, Beaver, Salt Lake City and Twin Falls. Nine AAA officials will be posted at each of these stops to supervise refueling and to see that none of the 80 seals on each car is removed except for legitimate reasons. Awards Posted Trophies will be presented in 11 price classifications and the sweepstakes. Each car will com pete for top honors with others in its own price range and all vie for the sweepstakes award. The sweepstakes is determined by the ton-miles-per-gallon sys tem. The weight of the car and passengers is multiplied by the number of miles travelled and the result divided by the gallons of gasoline consumed. The sys tem is designed to give all cars, heavy or light, an equal chance. The purpose of the event is to show the average motorist the potentialities of the modern au tomobile when it is properly driven, serviced and fueled. Brussels U.R) The failure of King Baudouin of the Belgians to attend the funeral of King George VI of Britain has alerted Belgian parliamentarians to sev eral potential dangerous ques tions. The questions remained un settled after King Leopold had abdicated in favor of his son last July. Both government and opposi tion members have been seeing the king frequently In an effort to settle the problems. The issue ould wreck the uneasy truce on the royal question which fol lowed Leopold's abdication. The most important question under discussion between the king and parliament, according to parliamentary sources, is that of Leopold's residence. Prince's Status Questioned The status of Prince Alex andre, nine-year-old son of Leo pold and his morgantic wife, Princess De Rethy, is also re ported to be under discussion. The government moreover has the task of explaining to the young monarch just who wields the power in Belgium. The potentially dangerolus character of these questions was thrown into relief by Baudouin's failure to attend the funeral of King George. Baudouin was re ported to be resentful over Brit ain's treatment of his father. The government was threat ened when the failure led to a motion of censure against it by the chamber of deputies Public opinion was left with the uneasy impression that Bau douin acted without the govern ment s consent and was more loyal to his dethroned father than to his state responsibilities It was Leopold s surrender of his army in 1940 without the government's consent which led to six years of strife and near revolution in Belgium. Although it has never been publicly mentioned that Leopold was influencing his son, the problem of their living together in Laeken Palace has been raised privately by parliamen tarians. Many are in favor of giving Leopold a new residence. At various times it has been speculated that Leopold would take up residence in the Belgian Congo and recently questions were asked in parliament about renovating the royal villa at Knokke on the sea coast. Prince Alexandre's status Is a tough constitutional problem. When Alexandre was born, Leo pold decreed that the prince would have no rights of acces sion to the Bclginn throne, but legal-minded Belgians point out that no matter what Leopold decreed, the prince is constitu tionally third in line of acces sion. The Belgian constitution states that male descendants of Leo pold I have a claim to the throne. Alexandre, as Leopold's third son, thus could claim the throne if Badouin and Leopold's sec ond son, Albert, died, no matter if his mother is a commoner. Alerted by the uproar and diD in Baudouin's popularity over the funeral, the government and opposition are now taking steps to tie up the explosive loose ends of the royal question. While these delicate negoti ations are proceeding between the young king and his parlia ment, King Leopold prepared to embark on a long sea voyage which it was reported would take him to Cuba and Ceylon. Albert Straus talked about the grading of alfalfa seed and Mr. Nealon spoke about prices on cattle, hay and grain. Thelma Beer received in hon or roll citation for her efficiency as lecturer. The travel lecture from Gold Hill Grange will visit Sams Val ley on April 19 and all Grange ladies are asked to bring a pie. A display table will be shown. Max Shulz is reported making good recovery.
