IMS As We Live YOU CAN WORK OUT FROM UNDER A POOR NICKNAME As a nation, we nave a great er variety of names of different national origins than almost any nation in the world. This is to be 'expected because we have' such wide variety of - national groups repre sented among our people. People with unusual names, however, usu- Dr. Hnrloek ally feel self-conscious and em barrassed about their names, ; This holds true for family names as well as for their own i given names. This embarrass ment may even reach the point where the person develops an inferiority complex. If you are a victim of such experiences, you are foolish. Why not regard your name as a mark of distinction, something to be proud of .instead of ashamed of? If you feel that way about it, others will, too. Of course an unusual name often gives rise to trouble in pronunciation and spelling. Don't let that concern you, ei ther. After all, what difference does it make if other people mispronounce your name or mis spell it? You can easily set them straight. Change Your Name When you have a given name that disturbs you because , you feel that it is inappropriate, un- dignified, or even infantile, use the other name your parents have given you or change your name. Your parents may be hurt at first but they will see your point of view if you explain it to them. A nickname is something you can always control. Most chil dren acquire a nickname as soon as they enter school. And this childhood nickname usually clings to them for the rest of their lives unless they do some thing to put a stop to it. Can Control Nickname Once again, that is something you can control if you take the matter in hand before the name becomes too firmly attached to you. When people call you a nickname you don't like, never By aiZAMTH HUILOCK, PtilX let them know how you feel If you do, that is sure way to make them cling to it. - Instead, say, "Most ot my friends call me 'so-and-so'.1 Once you can get the nickname of your choice started, it won't take long before it will replace the one you dislike. Parents of young children are smart " to give their child a nickname he won't object to and use it so widely that there will be little chance for another nickname to get started. LETTERS FROM READERS Troublemaker: "It seems te me that there is a troublemak er in every family. How east this be corrected to avoid dis rupting family harmony (A) Unfortunately, you are cor rect in saying that every family has a troublemaker. It may not be in the immediate family, but there is sure to be one among the relatives. A troublemaker is a person who is trying to get even or to compensate for what he believes to be neglect or mistreatment on the part of oth er members of the family. The only way you can put a stop to troublemaking is to be kind and considerate to that person. When he feels that he is accept ed and belongs, he will stop trying to make trouble. Control of Money: "Why do so many husbands feel that they should keep the family money and pay all the billsT Women are just as careful of money as man. Mrs. A. w. (A) You are correct in say ing that women, as a whole, are just as frugal as men. There are, however, exceptions to the rule among both men and women. Unfortunately, women have ac quired the reputation of having "no money sense" or of thinking that "money grows on trees.' As a result, many husbands are afraid to turn over the house hold money to their wives. Even women who have "no money sense" quickly acquire it when they discover that money to pay the butcher does not grow on trees." US O Cm Severl Nina, Cal 1 yC V Dr. Btady MANY DOCTORS ARE DUMB ABOUT NEEDLE SURGERY physicians are too backward, bigoted or inept to acquire the necessary knowledge and skill for the injection treatment Apropos of this shortcoming is me advice in the third edition of Watson's Hernia (published in '48 by Mosby) one of the fin est if not the finest textbook on the subject that the physician contemplating the use of the in jection method should first dis cuss it with other doctors in his community to familiarize them with it, so that if complications of any kind should develop he would not be charged with exp erimentation. This also applies to new operations for hernia, the author adds. I was going to pound out a sarcastic crack about that, but on winking it over I conclude that it is good advice, as sound as everything else in Dr. Wat son's book especially the chap ters on injection treatment He knows doctors. It is my hope that for the benefit of hernia sufferers ev erywhere my harping on the injection treatment may stimu late or encourage many physi cians to study the subject and find out for themselves just what this department of "needle surgery" offers for the satisfac tion of their patients. A reason able degree of conservatism in respect to new principles, reme dies or methods is wise and com mendable, but under the mis leadership of the AMA physi cians in general are misinform- In 193S the comic weekly of tne American Medical associa tion said in answer to a query from an Ark ansas p h y s i- cian about the ambulant (in jection treat ment of hernia -(rupture, breach): "While there would appear to be no place at aU for the injection treat ment it is possible . . . isolated instances in which an attempt of this sort might be justified." In 1940 in a report by the Council on Pharmacy and Chem istry . published in the official journal of the AMA the injec tion treatment fared better: "The Council now concurs in the opinion that the injection method involves less danger ot serious complications than sur gery . i Obviously, the "serious com plications" and "dangers" which the ever-ready operators so free ly ascribed to the newfangled method in those days were as hypothetical as those conjured up for the Arkansas physician whose naive query drew the out burst quoted above. In fact report by Drs. Harris and White, published in the comic weekly in '38, stated categorically that no serious complications or deaths occurred" in the injection treamtent ot 230 patients. Despite these uncontrovertible facts many thousands of persons who might be cured of hernia go un cured because they are not "good risks" for operation or be cause they do not choose to un dergo operation, because their and there is even less when the boy beats the girl in the game they are playing. Beating the girls is inevitable when the two sexes compete because boys de velop stronger muscles than girls and they, therefore, have great er strength. When a girl beats a boy, the boy feels humiliated, and that likewise kills romance. To avoid such embarrassing ex periences, boys and girls keep their sports separate. Corcoran, president of the committee which has been organizing support tor a pro posed new water district west of the Medford city limits, yester day urged residents of the area to cast their ballots in favor of the district A special election on the for mation of the district will be held on April IS. Most of those in the area are anxious for "city water." Cor coran said, and this will be their first chance to take advan tage of the enlarged supplies of water provided by the recently completed Big Butte springs pipeline. Water Unfit Corcoran pointed out that the area has many shallow wells, septic tanks, a high surface wa ter table and close concentration of buildings. As a result much of the well water is unfit for human consumption, he said. Directors for the proposed dis trict will be elected at the same time. The area involved is north west of the city and is bound ed roughly by Sage road on the east and north, a line parallel to and west of Ross lane on the west and the Jackson Highway Water district and the city lim its on the south. By Late Summer If the vote is favorable and the district is formed, it is hoped that city water will be come available to users in the area by late summer. Three Sentenced In Circuit Court - Three men were sentenced by Judge H. K. Hanna in circuit court Friday. Max Marvin May or, route 1, box 387, Central Point end Ronald Eugene John son, 722 North Riverside ave nue, were each given three-year terms in the state penitentiary on forgery charges. They were accused of passing two checks at Anderson's Thrift market on March 7. District Attorney Paul Haviland said both have ex tensive criminal recofd. Leon Berton' Finchem, Allen hotel, was given a two-year sus pended sentence on a charge of burglary involving the George Goodman service station on February 23. Haviland said that negotiations are being made to return Finchem to his home state, Iowa. Henry Albert Hiatt, 69, of 704 North Beatty street, entered a plea of guilty in circuit court Saturday on a sodomy charge. His case was continued for study of records prior to sentencing. According to city police and district attorney's reports, the case involved minor girls over a period time. Hiatt was arrested by city police on Friday. Active Club Members Hear Paul Haviland Paul Haviland, district attor ney for Jackson county, was guest speaker at last week's meeting of the Medford Active club, held at the Rogue Valley Country club. Haviland explained the func tion of the district attorney's of fice in the county and told of some of the cases he had been called to work on. George Schuler, president of the club, reported on plans for the Oregon State Convention of Active Clubs to be held here April 26 and 27. Dewey Wilson was program chairman. Eisenhower Committee Announces Treasurer R. B.
