Sam Ritter, son of Dr. and Mrs. Kersey-C Riter, fell into a bo( of soupy mud late Tues day near his home. It sucked him. downward like quicksand. Hollers for Help Sam hollered for help. Three young boys heard him and ran for help. An unidentified man came along and tried to pull the boy out. He finally called the fire department Firemen placed a ladder over the mud and slowly work ed the boy loose. It took three husky firemen to do the job. Young Riter told officers that he was taking a shortcut across the gully and stepped on the dried-looking mud at the edge of a puddle. "Everything gave way,'.' he said, "and the more I tried to get out, the deeper I got" - He was stuck for1 more than 30 minutes. Land Condemned For Dalles Dam Portland-U.R) The lands di vision of the U.S. government late Tuesday brought condemna tion proceedings involving 109Vi acres of river-front land at The Dalles to make way for con struction of The Dalles dam. . ZIPPER TOO ZIPPY Goshen, Ind. (U.R) The city fire department was called to the aid of 15-month-old Stephen Bot schuck because of a stuck jacket zipper. The zipper was pinching the boy's skin and his parents couldn't free him. Microwave Relay For 'Phone, TV, Discussed at Club Beaming-telephone conversa tions and . television pictures from coast-to-coast over the re cently completed transcontinen tal microwave radio relay sys tem was discussed by J. T. Welsh of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company at the weekly luncheon meeting of the Rotary club at the Jackson hotel yesterday. . This newest method of trans mitting' telephone calls uses extremely- high frequencies which can be formed into highly directional beams, the speaker said. The beams can carry thou sands of simultaneous telephone calls or the sight waves of many television programs. With a small microwave transmitter and receiver, Welsh demonstrated the physical pro perties of the microwaves. Metal plates reflected the waves while a lucite rod and a metal wave guide caused them to bend. The microwaves passed without difficulty through paper and wood. Projected for completion in late 1952 is the Portland-Seattle microwave system, Welsh said. Initially this system will be equipped to handle roughly 100 simultaneous telephone conver sations; eventually the system could handle thousands of tele phone calls or six television programs in each direction. Welsh was introduced by Jack Creager, Rotary program chair man and manager of the Pacific Telephone company here. Portland Bricklayers? Wage Scale Approved ' Portland (U. The Wage Stabilization Board Wednesday approved a new $3.15 an hour wage scale for journeymen bricklayers in the Portland area. At the same time, the brick layers requested another 2V& cents an hour they claim to have coming under a ruling of the constriction industry's stabiliza tion commission. The former director of the Washington State Aeronautics commission did not indicate whether the CAB would approve the merger, but the combination has been suggested by the board, Adams said he was alert to both the "need and economic feasibility" of extending air service into Ephrata, Moses Lake and Wcnatchee, as well as pro posed routes between the Tri City area and Seattle. Another Car Blazes; Firebug Suspected Portland (U.R) An unex plained fire broke out in an auto mobile in northeast Portland Tuesday night and police said the city's car-burning firebug might have shifted his opera tions. It was the 13th car fire report ed nere in little more than a week. Like the others, the fire started in the front seat of the car. Most of the interior of the vehicle was destroyed. M. H. Beer, owner of the car. told firemen he had parked the vehicle in the driveway next to his house and had not been smoking.
