Only two local contractors entered bids on the paving jobs. They were E. C. Conrad and T. R. Florey. .. Contracts awarded to Conrad, and his low bids, included South Peach street from 11th to 12th streets, $4,471.20; South Peach street from 12th to 13th streets, $4,957.30; Murray street from South Peach to Hamilton streets, $10,008.65; Beekman street from the end of the pavement to the end of the street, $9,320.90; Lin coln street from Main to 11th street, $16,016.10; Pennsylvania avenue from Rose to Peach streets, $9,383.58; Pennsylvania avenue from Summit, to Rose streets, $6,118.20; Pine street from Maple to Jackson streets, $14,004.90 and Maple street from Central to Riverside avenues, $14,359.40. Florey Contracts , Contracts awarded to Florey, and his low bids, were West 13th street, from Peach to Newtown streets, $7,008.35, and Madison place from Jackson to Reddy streets, $5,655. Each of the 11 bids was slight ly in excess of the city engineer's estimate, which totalled $96, 616.56, or about $4,500 less than the successful bids. Everett Den Herder was awarded contracts for the two street widening projects in com petition with two other bidders, T..W. Thomas and P. L. Knox. Den Herder's low bids were $10,105.35 on the East Main street project and $3,424.80 for Dakota avenue. In action on other paving pro jects, the council adopted plans and specifications and set May 6 for a public hearing on Wilson place from Eastwood to Keene way drives. Haven street from Summit avenue to Oak street, Jasper street from Melrose to Stewart avenues, Haven street from Columbus to Summit ave nues, and South Peach street from 13th street to Dakota ave nue. ' Hearingi Held -. Public hearings were held on paving of Washington street from West Main to West 10th streets and Fifth street from Oakdale avenue to Grape street. No opposition was voiced to the projects and the city attorney was instructed to bring in ordi nances on them at the next reg ular meeting April 15- A new petition for paving of Alta street from Melrose to Stewart avenues was presented to the council. It was referred to the city superintendent and the council streets and roads committee. . Plans and specifications were ordered on 12 other paving pro jects. They included Haven street from Oak to Woodstock streets and from Woodstock to Grape streets, Alice street from Niantic street to Riverside ave nue, Elm street from Main to 10th streets, Withington street from Hamilton to Plum streets, Woodstock street from Jackson to Second street, Oak street from Clark to Jackson streets, Taylor street from Myrtle street to the end of the street, , Keeneway drive from Main street to Wood lawn drive, Chestnut street from Main street to the city limits, East Ninth street from Portland to Vancouver avenues, a'nd King street from Belmont street to Stewart avenue. To Rent House Other business acted on by the council included a decision to rent rather than sell a large house on property acquired by the city for the municipal air port, issuance of a license to the U. S. weather bureau for con struction of a temporary balloon inflation station at the airport, and retention of a triangular piece of property at Haven and Grape streets for the citjr, parks. (See story on page 1) Lebanon Authorized To Get House Project ' Washington (U.R The Pub lic Housing Authority Wednes day cleared the way for acquisi tion by the" city of Lebanon of a defense housing project to which the community has been trying to win title for more than two years. , . PHA officials told Rep. Harris Ellsworth. R-Ore., an executive order will make possible the transfer. Lebanon will be required to purchase the land on which the housing stands, but otherwise will obtain the property without cost. s Opening Tomorrow; Will Give Prizes Ed Hall has- announced the grand opening tomorrow of his Pennywise ' Walgreen Agency Drug store. To observe the event he is conducting a store-wide sale. Prizes, balloons for the chil dren and favors for women will be given out daily and a foun tain special will be featured. Hall also announced the em ployment of Robert B. Morris as general manager of the store. Morris was graduated in June, 1951, from the Oregon State college school of pharmacy and is a member of the Kappa Psi honorary fraternity. He first worked after graduation at the the Redmond Drug store at Red mond, Ore., as manager. He is married and with his wife mov ed to Medford in December. Prescriptions Important . Hall, who purchased the store in December, has been in the drug business since 1934 and has been associated in the trade in Medford since 1941 except for service in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was employed here by Wainscott's drugs until he and Harold Wainscott" purchas ed the Hunters for Drugs, now known as Central Rexall drugs. Hall in president and general manager of that firm. Councilmen Authorize Letter of Sympathy A letter of sympathy to Mrs. Charles E. Gates was authorized yesterday by the Medford city council. Mrs. Gates is the widow of the late Charles E. (Pop) Gates, ex-mayor and councilman and long-time civic leader, who died last week in Salem. The motion authorizing the letter was made by Councilman Harold Frye. It was passed un animously by the council. ARRESTED- Grants Pass State police offi cers yesterday arrested Melvin Keller, a transient who has been residing in Glendale, and are holding him in the Josephine county jail for Los Angeles au thorities. ' One accident occurred at Voorheis crossing . on Highway 99 south of Medford, when a pickup truck driven: by Miles Leo Mosher, Central Point, and a logging truck driven by George Robert Jensen, 1615 East Main street, Ashland, were in volved in a collision as the pick up was passing the-truck. ; : Cause of the accident, which happened about 9:30 a.m. was not- revealed on the police re port, but only minor damage was listed for the pickup and none for 'the truck. A third vehicle was also indirectly involved in the accident, the report indi cated. The other accident happened at about 1:12 p.m. two miles south, of the Siskiyou mountain pass summit, and involved cars driven by Clyde Hobson Jones, San Fernando, Calif., and Ed mund Joseph Kiras, Albany, Calif. Both cars were severely damaged but no one, including three passengers, was hurt. " The first airplane flight from San Francisco to San Diego was made by Silas Christofferson, Feb. 16, 1914. i Taft's Fading Hopes Revived in Nebraska, Wisconsin Primaries By LYLE C. WILSON Washington (U.PJ Nebraska and Wisconsin voters put Sen. Robert A. Taft back in the con test for the Republican presiden tial nomination with a bang Wednesday with a solid showing of his midwestern strength. Taft won the Wisconsin pri mary and was pulling away from Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in tabulations of Tuesday's Ne braska primary poll. Taf t's First Triumph It was Ike's first reverse at the polls and Taf t's first triumph. Republican voters in the two great midwetern states fingered the senator and the general as far and away top candidates for their party's presidential nomination.- The returns revived Taft's fad ing campaign for the. nomina tion. Incomplete Nebraska tabu lations maintained a consistent lead for Taft in a head-on write in contest with Eisenhower. Ne braska and Wisconsin put a solid Midwest foundation under Taft's pre-convention efforts. Kefauver Scores Wisconsin Democrats gave Sen. Estes Kefauver an over whelming victory and 28 Demo cratic national convention votes. And as the Tennessean main tained a big lead in the Ne braska primary popularity con test, which does not bind the state's convention delegates, his opponent Sen. Robert S. Kerr of Oklahoma -conceded to Ke fauver. ; Kefauver's stature steadily grew with the victory while Kerr's diminished. Taft won 24 of Wisconsin's 30 nominating convention votes. Gov. Earl Warren of California took six. Harold E. Stassen and two others, including a stand-in for Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur, were blanked. , Taft Popularity Winner Taft also won the popularity contest, although his vote did not equal the combined total Of his opponents. The returns broke the back of the MacArthur for president movement in Wisconsin and probably elsewhere. Grant Rit ter was the MacArthur stand-in without the general's blessing. MacArthur managers in Wiscon sin announced they were trans ferring their support to Taft. The Wisconsin primary was crucial for Taft. His campaign could not have sustained a se rious reverse there. He needed a real victory such as he won to get back on the pace. Taft said Tuesday he was in the race for the nomination, win or lose in Wisconsin. Many, however, judge that for Taft in Wisconsin it was win or else. Warren said Wednesday he also was in the contest to stay.
