SIXTEEH MEDFORD (ORE GO If MAIL TRIBU1TE Thursday. Much 27. 183 Draft of Hoover As Clean-Up Head Is Recommended Washington (U.R) A key House member recommended ; Thursday that Congress draft! FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover j to take over Newbold Morris ! job as head o fthe government's! drive against corruption. Rep. Francis E. Walter, Pa., j a ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, , made the proposal. He told a ; reporter he would wage a "strong ! fight" for its approval at a; closed committee meeting. j Power Rejection Urged A Judiciary Subcommittee recommended Wednesday that; the House follow the senates lead and reject President Tru man's request for subpoena pow ers for Morris. Walter approved that recom mendation, but said Hoover should handle the cleanup job instead of turning it over to an "independent investigator" as the subcommittee proposed. Ability Unquestioned Recalling the hubbub stirred up by the Senate investigation of Morris' role in a highly-prof itable surplus tanker deal. Walter said: "It is unfortunate that Mr Morris has accumulated the at mosphere he has. Perhaps he could have handled the job." As for Hoover, he said, no one can question his "ability or in tegrity" and few if any doubt that "he would do a fine job. Kerr Effort in California Fails Los Angeles (U.R) Demo cratic Leader John B. "There was marked enthusi asm for Senator Kerr by .Dem ocrats over the state." Elliott said. Elliott said he had received a j telegram from the Senator ex pressing his sincere thanks to Democratic leaders who pledged their support and his "regret" that they could not enter the primary.
