Steel doesn't burn. Even the toilet seats are of non-inflammable plastic. The United States Lines purchasing department is shop ping around for checker boards that won't attract a flame. There will be about 30 of these aboard. Contrasting Shades Some of the samples which have been submitted are a de parture from the usual kinds, which, as you know, are made' of red and black squares. The samples without any paper or wood are of contrasting shades of gray. , The new vessel is being fitted for her maiden voyage right now at Newport News, Va. . Originally she was designed as a troop ship. Then along came the kar in Korea and there was a wait to see if she would be needed immediately. It became apparent she wouldn't. Can Be Reconverted . So the outfitting for passenger service began. But, the design ers tell me that it would be but a matter of days before the United States could be dragged off the waves and reconverted for troop-carrying if the need arises. There have been stories about the money we had to pay to rent the "Queens'." the Eliza beth and the Mary from Brit ain during the war. They did us a Kt of good, but the govern ment estimates that the rental on those mighty vessels amount ed to a lot more than the $70, 000,000 price tag on our new first lady of the seas. Air-Conditioning for Dogs Anyhow, the S.S. United States will be a luxurious ves sel. For one thing there will Landscaping Job At SOC Awaiting Clement Weather Ashland! The coming of spring will permit continuation of the landscaping program at South ern Oregon college, according to Donald E. Lewis, business mana ger. The project has been de layed by inclement weather. Progress ' has been made In front of the new library build ing with the moving of the Kerr duplex apartments. The area va cated and the present parking lot will be graded and a broad mall constructed from the li brary to Siskiyou boulevard. Work on Held Extensive work is also planned at the newly developed athletic field, Lewis explained. Lowell Ager is staking out the new base ball diamond located on the re cently annexed property adja cent to Walker avenue. Fifteen thousand yards of earth will be moved to prepare the ground and it is hoped that the area can be seeded this spring. Two new tennis courts will be constructed adjacent to the pres ent courts fronting Wightman street They will be of asphalt and enclosed with steel screen similar to the present courts. Concrete curbing will be con structed around the quarter mile track and the football field will be reseeded this spring. Chet Correy, superintendent of Lithia park, is in charge of the pro gram. .
