TOP LOCAL QUARTET The Novel Aires quartet, one of the top four-man singing groups of the local chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Sing ing in America, will be one of many quartets to appear in the second annual "Harmony Jamboree and Parade of Quartets" to be given here Saturday. Proceeds from the show, to be held in the high school auditorium at 8 p.m. Saturday, will go to purchase necessary equipment for Mercy Flights, Inc., Jackson county's non-profit air ambulance corporation. The quartet came in third in the northwestern championship con test held in Bellingham, Wash., last year, and has made numerous appearances in Oregon, Washington and California. 2nd Annual Harmony Jamboree Saturday; Many Quartets Due The second annual "Harmony Jamboree and Parade of Quar tets," to be held here Saturday at 8 p.m., will be one of the largest such songfests in the state this year, according to members of the local Barbershop singing organization which is sponsoring the event. Barbershop quartets from all over the Pacific northwest have Indicated they will attend the event, which will be in the sen ior high school auditorium. Threatened Walkout At Long Bell Averted Longview (U.R) A threat ened strike of 1500 employees of the huge Long Bell lumber com pany here wag averted Tuesday by an eleventh-hour settlement of a dispute over firing of an em ployee Feb. 21. -. The company agreed to rehire the unionist after the CIO In ternational Woodworkers o f America contended his discharge was "unfair," because it resulted from personal differences with another man. " President J. M. White of Long Bell, second largest industry in the Longview-Kelso area, de clined comment. . The union had called a walk out for 7 a.m. unless the contro versy was settled. Employer Inspection Fees Due by April 1 Salem (U.R) Employers sub ject to the factory inspection law must pay annual fees before Ap ril 1 to escape penalty payments, the State Industrial Accident commission reminded them Tues day. Administration and enforce ment of the factory inspection law was transferred from the State Bureau of Labor to the State Industrial Accident com mission by the 1951 legislature. The law requires that fees based on the number of em ployees be paid to the commis sion annually on Jan. 1 but a three month grace period is al lowed before employers are penalized. In Aztec days the capital of Mexico Tenochtitlan was a city of canals much like Venice, the National Geographic Society says. Yet it was situated where Mexico City stands today, more than 7,000 feet above sea level. ' All proceeds from the evening will go for the purchase of med ical and other supplies to be carried by the two planes oper ated by Mercy Flights, Inc., the local non-profit air ambulance service. These will include new pillows, blankets and other nec essary items for the comfort of the firm's patients. NW Champs Coming The Pacific northwest cham pion quartet, the "Uncalled Four,' will be on the program, sponsors reported today. In ad dition to the northwest title, the quartet . also took western di vision honors, and is rated among the top 15 quartets of the entire nation. Another expert singing group to be here will be the "Rose City Four," of Portland. This group held the Pacific northwest cham pionship for a time before the "Uncalled Four" took honors last year. - Other quartets will be the "Chords of Portland," the "Ore gon Aires" of Brookings, widely known throughout the state; the "Four by Four" quartet from Crescent City, Calif.; a new quar tet the "Quar-Tones," from Red ding; the "Postal Notes," from Roseburg, dressed as Postmen and a number of others. 50-Voice Chorus The entire Brookings 50-voice chorus will sing at the event Saturday, and last year's master of ceremonies. Bob Perkins, Portland, will again be in charge of the stage entertainment as well as furnishing humorous skits and pantomimes. Four Medford quartets, as well as others from Jackson county and elsewhere, will participate in the show. Tickets are now on sale, and members said they are going fast. Th group expects another sell out this year, and if sales go as they are expected, the event may be made into a two-day one next year. Tickets may be purchased from members of the SPEBSQSA chapter here, or from Barker's, Men store, Purucker's Piano house, or Pruitt's Music center. All seats are reserved. ANOTHER CLUE! The important thing to consider here is whether or not the print is fast. If it is fugitive, you're in for trouble. THE BEST PRECAUTION AND ONE THAT "WORKS" 100 OF THE TIME IS TO DEMAND A GUARANTEE FROM THE MER CHANT THAT THE PRINT IN QUESTION IS COLOR FAST, IF HE CANNOT ASSUREYOU, DONT BUY IT. , And that ends your trouble. You then buy a print which is color fast, exercise reasonable precaution with it, and everybody's happy. However, such sweetness and light do not always prevail in this world. So here's a word of caution. PRINTED JERSEY is on of the worst offenders In fugitive prints. While not all printed jerseys are unserviceable, there are enough of them on the market so you'd be wise to be cautious. NYLON PRINT is often found which is unserviceable. Here again perhaps the best recommendation we can make is that you demand color fastness from your merchant. UNCURED PRINTS. In general, the whole subject of prints could be summarized under this one heading. Almost any printed fabric can stand ordinary cleaning procedures with the exception of bleaching and staining if . the dyes used have been properly "fixed". This ordinarily means both curing the print for the prescribed length of time at the right temperature, using the proper mordant or fixing agent. Again, the best recommendation is: DEMAND PROPER GUARANTEE FROM YOUR MERCHANT. If you don't get it, don't buy it..
