Broadcast Friday Of 'Veterans Hour' Camp White An audience es timated at over l.ouo wunessea the premiere of the new Camp White radio show, "The Veterans Hour " snonsored by Myers-Hol land post of the American Le gion, Central Point, here last Fri day. Featured on the program as guest master of ceremonies was Universal International Pictures' Charles Mack, Hollywood actor, . who introduced the vaudeville acts which included Ralph Ettell and his banjo; Colleen Hope and students in a dance, and Miss Judv March of the Make Be lievers, a song stylist. The Camp White orchestra played a medley. The "Make Believers," cur rently appearing at the Red Barn, and the "Hungry Five," a musical act from Medford senior high school, were also part of the Droeram. Guests included Mrs. Marie Wilcox, state senator from Jose phine county; "Bill" Abbott, rep resenting Mayor Burleson of Cen tral Point; Stanley Jones Jr., representing Mayor D. L. Flynn of Medford; Albert Thompson, senior vice-commander of Myers- Holland Post; Jack Peters, Dis trict 4 commander, American Le gion, representing Department Commander Hollis Hull; Hugh Williams, commander of Post 15, Medford, and Adam Kilpatrick, personal representative of Mrs. C. S. Jackson of the Oregon Journal. The quiz program following the vaudeville featured Jimmy Dunlevy of KYJC as master of ceremonies, and Mack asking the questions. Members of the Camp White domiciliary center only are eligible to participate, and all six contestants won a prize. They failed to answer the jack pot question, and the grand prize was held over for the next show on April 11. Medford and Central Point merchants furnished the prizes for the contest. Man Finds Boiled Egg In Chocolate Malted Boston U.R) George Huestis ordered a chocolate egg malted in a soda fountain. "How do you want the egg?" asked the waitress. "Boiled," replied Huestis, thinking she was joking. Sipping his drink, he discov ered an odd object in the glass. He found that it was, indeed, a boiled egg, with shell removed. The horrified proprietor, sum moned the waitress for a show down. "That's just what he ordered," insisted the waitress, who was putting in her first day on the job. Y., a big smile and ladle-full of beans as hungry members of 25th Infantry Division look on. ' (International) Italian Movie Chief Seeks Unknown Girl for Star Role New York (U.R). Italian i down for his last picture, "Ujh- movie director Vittorio De Sica thinks Gene Tierney is one of the most beautiful actresses in the world, but he would prefer to star "a citizen from the street" in his first American movie. He just doesn't like to star movie queens in his pictures "un less, by accident, the star repre sents the type." Not that he has anything against glamour, the handsome former matinee idol protested in an interview shortly after he arrived for his first visit here Actresses Admired "I have a great admiration for your actresses Joan Crawford and Olivia De Havilland and for their intelligence, too," he said. "But I think you lose spontan eity when you try to fit the ac tress to the role." So, if Hollywood agrees when he goes out there to discuss pos sible picture deals De Sica will film an American love story, "Maybe in Chicago or New York or another city," with a girl who never dreamed of stardom in the leading role. An unemployed laborer, Lam berto Maggiorani, became an overnight sensation when De Sica picked him for the leading role in "Bicycle Thief." He discovered Pier Angeli, now a star both here and in Italy, but regretfully turned her berto D "She had not the face, nor the . . . ah . . . interior, that I need ed," said the director. "I needed an almost primitive girl who would commit evil without the knowledge of the wrong she was doing." He found her in the small town of Aquila, working as an apprentice dressmaker. Some day, he predicted, the girl, Ma ria Pia Casilio, will be a great actress. Science at Work New York (U.R) The age of the "Hotu Man" may soon be determined by the use of radio active atoms. "Hotu Man" is a prehistoric specimen, dug up from a section in northern Iran by a team of University of Pennsylvania sci entists last year. His age has been estimated at between 15,000 to 75,000 years. The Hotu remains consist of two skulls and other . human bones. They were found about 40 feet below the earth's surface, below the gravel layers of the Iron Age, the Copper Age and the Stone Age. The scientists be lieve that two or more men of some ancient day had been sit ting in a cave when a rockslide came down and crushed them to death. Delicate Instrument Here is how the scientists hope to learn the approximate age of Hotu. All fossils, rocks and oth er ancient matter contain a cer tain amount of Carbon 14 atoms. The atoms are radioactive, and one half of that radiation is spent in 5.000 years. After 30,000 years the radiation is so weak that it cannot be counted. The radiation count is made by use of a Geiger counter, a del icate instrument that picks up radiation. If the Hotu man is older than 30,000 years and By PAUL F. ELLIS United Press Science Editor there is some belief that he is then his effects will have no measurable radioactivity. In oth er words, they can determine for sure whether he is 30,000 years old but if he is older than that, there is no way to tell his exact age. Tests Have Bearing The scientists point out that a determination of Hotu's age might prove that human beings lived almost in their present form in a glacial era when an thropologists had thought man kind was represented only by sub-human ancestors. The tests, according to Dr. Froelich G. Rainey, might show that modern man shared the earth with the sub-human forms and perhaps even preceded them. Attorney Opens Office In Brophy Building Attorney Walter Nunley an nounced this week that he has opened an office for the general practice of law in Room 1, Bro phy building. Nunley, who was formerly as sociated with the Roberts, Branchfield and Kellington law firm, is a candidate for the Republican nomination for dis trict attorney of Jackson county. Page said he can now better appreciate the full meaning of United Nations cooperation. The vessel on which he served is a former British corvette, similar to an American destroyer-escort, which was given to the Republic of Thailand. The ship was oper ating off the eastern coast of Korea near Wonsan and Song jin. The press release said that such cooperation among varied national fighting forces is com mon in the Korean conflict, with American, British, Greek, Turk ish, French, South American and other troops fighting side-by-side. West Coast Line Loses Bellingham, Grants Pass Stops Washington U.F0 West Coast airlines Tuesday had a new franchise to continue its operations in Washington end Oregon until Sept 30. 1954. The Civil Aeronautics board renewed the operating rights cf the line but eliminated its route between Seattle and Bellingham, Wash. WCA operations will be limited to runs between Med ford in southern Oregon to Seattle. WCA Seeking Merger In another case still pending before the CAB. West Coast is seeking a merger with Empire Air lines. It was previously de nied a requested merger with Southwest which operates fnra Medford to San Diego. Calif. The board deferred action on an application for a route be tween Medford and Klamath Falls and it suspended Wet Coast's authority to serve Port Townsend and Kelso in Wash ington and Grants Pass and M Minnville in Oregon. 5PCA Inspector Kills Cais Roaming Estate Victoria. B. C. UPJ Cats that escaped the shotgun blasts of SPCA inspector Ben Maggs were promised their lives Tues day, but no more chicken twice-a-week. Maggs had been carrying out the deathbed wish of Mrs. W. F. B. Berger. wealthy widow for merly of Denver, Colo., who had let about 150 stray cats roam her estate near here. Maggs. his shoulder sore from the recoil of his shotgun after killing 138 felines in three days, said he did not know how many more cats were left on the estate. Neighbors pleaded to be al lowed to take care of the remain ing cats roaming the underbrush. Mrs. Berger spent about $150 a month feeding them meat deli cacies, including chicken twice-a-week and 14 quarts of milk a day. New Source of Wafer For Southwest Needed Washington 4U.PJ The South west must find new sources of water or its future economy "will be in jeopardy because of recurring drought." according to the interior department The best source appears to be the coastal streams of the Pacific Northwest and northern Califor nia and the ocean itself, it said. Secretary of the Interior Oscar L. Chapman issued a report "The drought in Southwestern United States" which said the 10-year water shortage which has been threatening the area is one of the eighth most severe droughts since the 13th century. Both the federal Bureau of Reclamation and California have been considering plans for imp porting water from the north to the arid southland, it said. re DOING JVST WHAT sign says. (International) Airplane Pilot's Language Still Bunch of Jibberish San Francisco OI.PJ Here Is a preview of things to come in the air world: A jet pilot zeros in over an airfield for a landing. The con trol tower gives him his wind velocity and tells him which runway to use. "Romeo." the pilot radios back. "Alfa, Lima, Lima: Sierra, Echo. Tango." What he would say in the former air lingo is: "Roger. Able. Love, Love, Sugar, Easy, Tear." That means: "Okay. AU set." This streamlining or the air man's Jibberish known as the phonetic alphabet is the work of two college professors who de cided the old "Able. Baker. Charley" system in use during World War U has outlived its usefulness. The language professors, one unidentified American and one unidentified Frenchman, scrap ed around for words which they thought would be most easily understood by airline pilots throughout the world. They said the old business was "strictly English" and that the new one was much more univer sal because it used only "the basics." and had its roots in Latin. Instead of the old item for "I" there's -India," and Love has taken a back seat to "Lima" to represent the letter "L". "Quebec" has taken over from Queen as the designation for "Q" arid "Tango" has stepped in for Tear at the "T" position. Pan American here says most of its pilots think the new al phabet system is a better one. Perhaps most difficult of all to do without will be the old standby "Roger", which has helped immortalize every ad- venture-in-the-sky movie thriller since Wrong Way Corrigan. The only symbol that was left untouched was the one for "V" Victor. Here To Stay The International Civil Avia tion organization, governing body for the world's major com mercial airways, has passed the list around to Pan American, United, TWA, Philippine Air lines, and the other major air lines. Most of them have agreed that new jargon is here to stay. (U.R) Au thorities Tuesday were investi gating a fire which claimed two lives and destroyed 50 homes in the Indian village of Kitkakla, 25 miles south of Prince Ru pert, B. C. Two small girls, Pearl and Katy Hills, died in the Sunday fire. " - Meanwhile, damage was esti mated at $150,000 from an early morning fire which wiped out an entire block on the main street of Qualicum Village on Vancou ver Island. Four one-story build ings were destroyed. At Cloverdale, B.C., the ath letic hall and opera house were destroyed by a fire Saturday. Damage was estimated at $50,000. Child Evangelism Conference Planned Ashland A spring conference for the Child Evangelism move ment will be held at the First Baptist church here March 20 and 21, it was announced today. Registration will begin at 9:30 a. m. on the 20th. A potluck supper for "the whole family" will be held at 6:30 p. m., with the evening service beginning after the supper. The Rev. Reider Kalland. western regional director for Child Evangelism, and a team of assistants, will be in charge. Suggestions for teaching chil dren with the use of flannel boards will be presented, and anyone wishing to gain experi ence may attend, bringing his own flannel. A nursery will be provided. BOOSTERS CASH IN Phoenix, Ariz. (U.R) The Phoenix chamberpot commerce decided to capitalize on free ad vertising space when state law required only one license plate in the rear on automobiles in 1952. The chamber is selling li cense tags for the front with the slogans, "Phoenix, Arizona," and "Fabulous Phoenix." Prop Huts Plan First '52 Flight The Medford Prop Nuts mod el airplane flying club an nounced today that their first competition meet of the season will be held next Sunday. The flying field is on the Agate desert, near Camp White, and the public is always wel come to witness the events. Competitors from points as far distant as Salem will par ticipate, club members said, and the meet will go on "rain or shine." A special event will be a demonstration of a radio-controlled model airplane by How ard Reed of Crescent City, Cal. Competition will include an event for beginners, models with motors, all classes; a rubber-power open event, a M open event and A, B and C class combined open event.
