Cntsmottonolj Most Filipinos Than Prior to Manila (U.R) The average Filipino citizen makes more money these days than he ever did but he has to spend much more than ever and generally has to tighten his belt a little. The reason is high prices usu ally three to four times pre-war levels and sometimes much more. Manila, capital and nerve cen ter of the Philippines, is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. The average Manilan today is worse off than before the Pacific war. Out in the provinces, however. life is generally easier on most Filipinos, even though hundreds of thousands of them are unem ployed or can find employment only part of the year. Labor Poorly Paid The minimum wage for the Manila area is four pesos or two U. S. dollars a day, but that is supposed to be the lowest per sonal laboring class income. The average wage earner gets P200 to P250 ($100 to $125) a month and if he has a wife and three or four children he almost never has enough. Usually, he spends all that he earns and has a small deficit at the end of each month. The creditor, most likely, is the corner store owner, where the worker gets his prime needs, on his reputation as a good debt or, when the cash runs out. Here's an estimate of what the average Manila family man has to pay for monthly: Rent, at least P40 ($20).. Rice and bread, P25. Fish vegetables, pork, meat and eggs, P60. Coffee or cocoa, sugar, and milk, and margarine, P10. The total is P142 or $10, leav 5" v Worse Off Pacific War ing a balance of P58 to P108. The balance will go to clothing, also a major expense, and to chil dren's school expenses, trans portation, medical bills, cigar ettes, recreation such as movies, and possibly a little gambling. The average family can af ford to buy only a little meat or pork, usually on Sundays. A kilogram (2.2 pounds) of pork costs P2.80 and a kilogram of other meat costs between P3 and P5, depending on the quality. Eggs are a prohibitive item. They cost P.20 (ten U. S. cents) each, but if bought by the dozen at the market they may be had for P2 or $1 a dozen. Before the war, eggs could be had for as low as two and a half cen tavos each. Cigarettes (usually American) cost 90 centavos ($0.45) a pack. The strange cold light produc ed by fireflies is caused by ox idation of a substance called lu cifern, which science has not yet succeeded in making artifi cally. Cold light can be man produced by oxidation of cer tain chemical substances, but its cost is roughly ten millian times that of the same amount of light produced in a 100-watt fila ment lamp.
