S. Coast Guard cutter Courier at sea. The balloon will carry the antenna of the ship, which is now the Voice of America's floating transmitter. The ship will be used to beam the truth behind the Iron Curtain. ir Force Plane Buying Plans Call for Six New Types of Jets By CHARLES CORDDRY United Presi Aviation Writer Washington (U.R) Air Force plane buying plans for the com ing fiscal year call for six new types of high-speed jet fighters and a powerful new light bomb er developed originally for the Navy. All, including the bomber, are in the 600 to 700 miles an hour class. Some may exceed those speeds. Besides the new types, additional orders will be placed for combat planes now in pro duction. A summary of production types for fiscal 1953, beginning July 1, from official and unoffi cial sources, follows: Mew Global Bomber Boeing B-52 Stratofortress: An eight-jet "global" atomic bomb er soon to start flight tests. Range is probably 8,000 miles. Boeing B-47 Stratojet: A six jet medium bomber with more than 600 miles an hour speed, already in production with new orders to come. Range is about 4,000 miles. Douglas RB-66: A twin-jet bomber to be produced at first in high-speed reconnaissance ver sions. It was developed, and is to be produced, for the Navy as the A3D carrier-based attack bomber. Martin B-57: A twin-jet light bomber developed originally by Britain as the Canberra. Speed is about 500 miles an hour. Has spanned the Atlantic in record time. To Continue B-36 The Consilodated Vultee B-36 superbomber will continue in production under present orders into 1954 and a few additional ones may be ordered in the com ing fiscal year. Also to come under consideration is Consoli dated Vultee's YB-60, an all-jet version of the B-36. New types of fighters include: North American F-100, a larger plane than the same company's F-86 Sabre with more sharply sweptback wings and close to twice the power. McDonnell F-101, a long-range escort fighter which can double as a fighter-bomber to support armies. Developed originally as the F-88. New Types of Intercepter Consolidated Vultee F-102, a radically new type of inter cepter plane with delta triangular wing and extremely rapid rate of climb for attacking bombers. Developed originally as the XF 92 and tested extensively by Lt. Col. Charles Yeager, the nation's first supersonic pilot. North American F-86H, a big ger version of the Sabre modi fied for higher performance and ground support roles. Lockheed F-94C, a very high speed, thin-wing version of the present F-94B all-weather inter ceptor. Believed to be supersonic. Republic F-84F, a sweptback wing version of the F-84 Thunder-jet ground support plane. Also to be produced in a recon- Pilgrimmage to UN Leaders Council Two high school students from Jackson and Josephine counties a boy and a girl will be se lected this year to visit the Unit ed Nations headquarters in New York July 13 to 18, according to members of the Odd Fellows Southern Oregon Leaders coun cil, which sponsors the project. School heads of the two coun ties are being contacted by coun cil members and asked to spon sor a boy and a girl student. 16 or J 7 years old, who will be a junior or senior next year. The students will be selected for character and leadership. Though they need not ' be the best students, they should be above average in their grades and other requirements, mem bers said. Interest Essential Interest in world affairs is es sential, they stressed. Final selection of students who will make the pilgrimage will be made by a committee of edu cators from Josephine and Jack son counties. This year it is expected that 14 students from the Western states will attend. Last year. Miss Fran Cooper,- Grants Pass high school student sponsored by the Southern Oregon Lead ers council, was the only candi date to the pilgrimage from the three Western states. naissance version, the RF-84F. Other Fighters Other fiscal 1953 production fighters: North American F-86D, an all weather interceptor version of the Sabre which fires Navy-de veloped anti-aircraft rockets. Other production versions of the Sabre, later than the models in Korea, include the F-86E and F-86F. Republic F-84G, a ground sup port fighter with special high pressure aerial refueling appar atus. One recently stayed aloft for 12 hours. Northrop F-89 Scorpion, an all-weather "destroyer" which weighs more than a 21-passenger DC-3 airplane and mounts six 20 mm cannon in some versions, antiaircraft rockets in others. Numerous transport plane types for personnel, Army equip ment, strategic air command sup port work, and aerial refueling operations also will be ordered. NOT EMPTY TALK Grand Rapids, Mich. The 36-year-old actress de scribed Stauffer as "charming" when it came to operating his night club in Acapulco, Mex. "But to make a good hus band," she observed philosophi cally, " is something else again." In granting the divorce the judge gave the actress back her professional name.
