0 'Ashland Woman Honored On Ninety-Ninth Birthday Ashland Mrs. Sarah Catherine Wing celebrated her 99th an niversary here Monday, March 10. She is the mother of Mrs. J. H. McGee, 327 Morton street, Ashland, and came here with her daugh ter from Oakland, Calif., in 1901. She has lived here since. - In honor of Mrs. Wing's birth day, women of the Phoenix Church of Christ, which Mrs. Wing attends) entertained Sun day evening, March 9, at the church following the regular service. They presented her a decorated birthday cake and gang the traditional "Happy Birthday" song. Mrs. Wing ac knowledged the honor with a short talk. Mrs. Wing was born in Ore gon City, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Blevins, who came to Oregon with the Bur-nett-Applegate wagon train in 1843, from Independence, Mo. ' Mrs. Wing is in excellent health and does light housework about the home of her daughter and when weather permits she takes daily walks. She attends church regularly. She also has a son, W. R Wing, Concord, Calif., who came y plane last week to be with his mother for her birtnaay, There are five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren Mrs. McGee is the mother of three of the grandchildren, Ray mond McGee, Ashland, Vernon McGee, San Francisco; and Ev erett McGee, minister of the Phoenix Church of Christ, who lives in Ashland. Mr. W. R Wing's sons are Paul Russell Wing of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Wallace Wing of Concord. Mrs. Wing is looking forward to a plane trip to New York City, a gift promised to her by a great-grandson for her 100th birthday. Her mother was Levina Van derpool who was born in Ten nessee in 1821 and her father was born in Kentucky in 1809. The couple left Independence April 1, 1843, with others of the party and arrived at Oregon City December 1, 1843, being eight months on the trip. At Ft. Hall, about 80 miles from Salt Lake City, the original party separat ed, part of the group going to California, and the remainder, or the Burnett-Applegate company, took the northwesterly route through the Blue mountains and to the headwaters of the Snake river. Church Rector Talks For Medford Union The Woman's Christian Tem perance union heard the Rev. George R. V. Bolster speak of his experiences as a missionary In northern Canada, when they met Thursday afternoon at the Girls Community club. Presiding was Mrs. Guy Cox, president. Mrs. Robert Taylor presented Mrs. W. T. Frost who gave devotionals, and Mrs. How ard Bush sang special music with Mrs. Lester Winslow at the piano. Mrs. Sherman L. Divine gave excerps from the organ ization's national paper. Mrs. W. P. Bowman gave two readings. The Rev. Mr. Bolster was presented by Mrs. G. O. Sanden. Miss Elizabeth Burr spoke of the legislative work of the group and women from the Free Meth odist church served refresh ments. Talk on Herbs Given For Central Point Club; Announce Coming Events , Central Point Herbs were the theme for the day last Wed- nesday when members of Cen tral Point Garden club listened to a talk by Mrs. John Hoist. Mrs. Hoist displayed many va rieties of herbs, as she told of their uses; some are available for subtle flavoring of foods while others are known for their fragrances and use in sachets and other gift items. Preceding the program, lunch eon was enjoyed by the group, with dessert being served by the hostesses, Mrs. John Holmer, Mrs. James Cornutt and Mrs W. I. Sutherland. Decorations pertaining to St. Patrick's were used; small favors of ivy were presented to each by Mrs. Hol mer. , Mrs. Dean Wilson was intro duced as a new member and Mrs. Jerry Jerome and Mrs. Howes were guests. The guest speaker, a member of the Butte Falls Garden club was presented a Fred Howard rose bush by the club. Corsage-of-the-month was received by Mrs. H. E. Conger and prizes by Mrs. Lloyd Seymour and Mrs. J. E. Vincent. Announcements included the plant sale March 20 at Alex ander's Hardware; the next meeting April 2 and the flower show, "April Showers," April 5 at the American Legion hall. Missionary Program Planned by Baptists Wednesday at Church The First Baptish church, Fifth street and Central avenue, will sponsor an all-church mis sionary program Wednesday evening, March 19 at 7:15 o'clock. The program will begin with a song service followed by devotions led by Mrs. J. R. Coch ran. There will be special music and "While It Is Day," a film on Japan, will be shown. The men, women, young peo ple and children will then sep arate into groups for prayer and White Cross work. Refreshments will be served during a fellow ship hour. It is stressed that this pro gram is for the entire family and each family is asked to take a paint brush, pictures of birds and flowers, scissors, scrap ma terial for quilt blocks and old birthday cards. Ofve Rebekah Lodge To Hold Initiation Initiation ceremonies will be conducted by Olive Rebekah lodge members when a regular meeting is held Monday at 7:30 p. m. in tne luut nau ai a West Sixth street. Mrs. Lewis Thompson, degree staff captain, this week made an nouncement of the initiations. Mrs. Alfred Schroeder, noble grand, will preside. Mrs. Bert Kenyon and her committee will serve refresh ments. Mrs. Harold Straus, Talent, and Mrs. W. H. Holt. Medford. sister to Mr. Walter, planned the observance. They presented Spring flowers decorated the rooms. the couple an anniversary cake. Fifty-seven guests called dur ing the afternoon. Mrs. Walter's mother, Mrs. Emma Morris, Chico, Calif., was in charge of the guest book and Mrs. Denage-Thoreson, Tal ent, presided at the refreshment table. Miss Jo Anne Christian. Med ford. and the Walter's daughter, Miss Garda Walter, served. The couple received many gifts and congratulatory cards. The Walters were married in Lakeview. Ore., in 1927 and have lived in Talent since 1944. They also have a son. Dale Walter. Butte Falls Gardeners Plan Meeting Tuesday Butte Falls "Tree Quota tions," will be used for answer ing roll call at a meeting of the Butte Falls Garden club Tues day, March 18. Landscaping will be the subject of a talk given during the meeting which will be held in the home of Mrs. N. B. Stoddard, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. March It. Wednesday. Miss Blanche Arnold was cohostess. A public card party is plan ned for the next meeting March 26 in the Girls Community club. Plans were made at the meeting for a rally to be held April 23 in honor of the supreme oracle of the lodge who lives in Rock Island, 111. Housewarming Held For Medford Couple A group of friends of Mr. and Mrs. John Bowdish met the eve ning of March 8 at their new home on Culver road as I a "housewarming" for the couple. The guests came dressed in cos tumes, the men wearing formal dress suits with top hats and the women were dressed in "formal" gowns. Pinochle was played and prizes were given to Mrs. J. D. Wagner and F. E. Parke, who won high score; Mrs. F.E. Parke and H. W. Ward, who won low score; and Mrs. J. D. Wagner and H. W. Ward, for pinochle. The program which fol lowed the business meeting pre sented Mrs. Frank Blaar in two contralto solos. She was accom panied by Mrs. Charles Adam son. Mrs. Earl Rogers, program chairman, introduced Mrs. H. W. Thompson, who gave a book review, "We Barrymores," by Lionel Barrymore, which gave a delightful portrayal of the fa mous family. During the tea hour which followed Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Rogers presided at the tea table.
