Ten years ago a book titled Childbirth Without Fear, by Grantly Dick Read, M.D., 2. published, in America (my copy has disappeared and I forget the publisher's name). I advise every expectant mother to read this book and, if possible, engage a doctor who not only "permits" the husband to remain but in sists on the husband's attendance. One after another hospital or lying-in institution is changing over from 19th century methods to rooming-in, as the modern method is called. While the old timers still have their way most hospitals will coast along with the 19th century methods the customers are pretty gullible anyway. But in the next ten years we shall see the last of those quaint exhibits of the old time obstetrics, the mingling (and too often cross-infection) of newborn infants behind a plate glass show window, and the mon key cage where the dear. sissy boys are kept sweet and inno cent while their wives are in carcerated like animals, sepa rated from their mates, at the mercy of the hospital staff.
