Experts Confident
America Still Leads
In Airplane Quality

Moscow and the MIG-15 jet fight
er's showing in Korea have dis
pelled any lingering notion that
Russia is a babe in the woods of
air power.
Military experts are optimis
tic that, plane type for plane
type, America remains the leader
in quality. But Congress has been
told in appropriations hearings
that "our technological superior
ity may not be as great as we
had thought on the basis of pre
Korean intelligence."
Requirements ReTised
And the performance require
ments for forthcoming Ameri
can combat planes have been
revised radically upward. For
tunately, scientists are providing
the necessary information.
Dr. Jerome C. Hunsaker,
chairman of the National Advis
ory Committee for Aeronautics,
says "we now see the possibility
of radical gains in airplane per
formance that are of great mili
tary significance." He adds that
such gains are just as attainable
by Russia.
The Soviet obviously lead in
number of planes. According to
t!.e best information available,
Russia since 1946 has outbuilt
the United States 3 to 1 in com
bat planes. There has been some
narrowing of the gap recently.
6500 Mile Range Seen
Russia's new bomber is desig
nated type 31. It is believed to
have a range of 6,500 miles.
However much that may fall
short of a B-36's range, it still
is enough to get the Russian
plane to targets in the United
States and home again. The
bomber's speed is 470 miles an
hour, and Russia may have 10
to 20 of them by year's end.
The Russian bomber appears
to be a more recent development
than America's B-47 Stratojet,
which is far faster but of shorter
range, and earlier than Ameri
ca's B-52, an intercontinental
jet bomber ow undergoing
ground tests. The B-52 is faster
as well.
Russia Said Lagging
It would seem only a matter
of time until Russia has sub
stantial fleets of type 31s. To
combat such planes, the U. S.
Air Force has at least three all
weather Interceptor fighters.
Russia is believed to lag badly
in all-weather fighter develop
ment; although she has hun
dreds and probably thousands
of MIG-15 day interceptors.
The Soviets have two types of
light bombers, jet-propelled and
in the 500 mile an hour speed
range. There are about 800 of
these now, and Russia is believed
to be building them at a rate of
1,000 a year. These are the types
27 and 35. The U. S. Air Force
by contrast has yet to receive its
first B-17 light bomber, an
American version of the British
Canberra.
Uses Piston Engines
In the field of fighter-bombers,
for support of armies, Russia
still uses mainly slow piston-engine
planes, whereas substan
tial quantities of American jet
ships have been built here and
are in increasing production.
An indication of Russia num
erical strength is the contribu
tion she has made to the Korean
war. There were scarcely. any
planes available in Manchuria in
October, 1950. By June, 1951,
there were 1,050, half of them
jet fighters. By February, 1952,
there were 1,700, including 900
jets.

Spoiled Ham At
Navy Depot Said
Not Total Loss
Washington (U.R) Navy
Secretary Dan A. Kimball con
firmed Monday that 43.751
pounds of ham, valued at $23,
000, spoiled at the Naval Supply
depot in San Diego, Cal., but
he denied that the government
will suffer a total financial loss
on the ham.
In a letter to Chairman Lyn
don B. Johnson (D., Tex.) of
the - Senate Preparedness com
mittee, Kimball said the spoiled
ham "has a salvage value and
can be disposed of to fat-rendering
plants ..."
None Thrown Away
"None of this ham was dis
posed of by being taken to a
garbage dump," . he said. He
said it is now being offered
for sale by competitive bids, but
he does not know yet "what
value will be received."
: In reply to inquiries from the
committee, which has been in
vestigating the spoilage, Kim
ball blamed the loss of the ham
on "unavailability- of freeze
space in the San Diego area,
either Navy or commercial."
