" GIRLS OF TODAY By O'tve Storcfier Back in great-grandmother's day it vyas considered a grave matter if a girl didn't marry when she was quite young. Educational opportunities and avenues of making a living were limited, and recreation was opt to be confined to needle-work and helping mother cook for the church supper or bazaar. Not so with the modern young woman. Educa tional opportunities are only as limited as her ability and courage; she can enter any of a dozen professions or seek work in fields as varied and interesting os those open to her brother. Furthermore, her spare time can be made useful and interesting with social work, hobbies or participation in her choice from a thou sand and one recreation-! activities. Even os small a city as Medford offers many pos sibilities, as evidenrea1 by the five young women pic tured today. : Miss Virginia Sullenger (upper left) is employed by Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company in Med ford. A newcomer. Miss Sullenger came from Moriarty, N. M., to visit relatives and liked the city so well she staved on. Miss Sullenger lives at Girls' Community club, and is shown here settled for an hour's reading . with the club cat. Tommy, for company. The club is ODen only to girls who come from other towns and cities and need a supervised, economical ploce to live while becoming adjusted to a new way of life. Miss Sullenger attends First Met'iodist church. She is a daughter of Mrs. R. S. Sullenger of Moriarty. Also among the city's "working girls" are the Misses H-rriPtt ond J-nnv lo-i HoMcir-.'on (lower left), daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Houghton, 512 Dakota avenue. Miss Harriett, wTio attended Willam ette university after graduating from Medford high school, is a receptionist for Doctors clinic and her sis ter, who continued her education at the University of Oregon after graduation here, is a dental assistant to Dr. Bernard Thompson. Both girls are amateur artists, and take painting lessons. Miss Harriett (at left) is shown discussing the beginning of o sketch with her sister. Harriett is also interested in outdoor soorts. and qoes skiing at Crater Lake with members of the Medford Ski club. Janny Lou is the finncee of Sgt. Elmer F. McDade, currently in Korea with the army. The sisters attend St. Mark's Episcopal church. Miss Mary Ellen Smith (upper right) is a business airl who likes to cook in her soor time and is shown here frosting a cake which she whipped up after work one evening last week. Miss Smith, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril A. Smith,'15 Keeneway drive, works in the purchasing department of California Oregon Power company, having, taken employment with th firm after graduation from Medford high school. Sh lives at home with her parents, and helps with the rest of the housework, as well as cooking, when she is net on duty at Copco. Miss Smith is a member of Nu Phi Mu, sorority for young business women. Shown at the desk in the city library, where sh is a junior assistant, is Miss Charlene Pike (lower right). Miss Pike, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Pike, 1007 East Jackson street, has two hobbies Footlighters, Medford little theater group, and Ladies' Mounted troop. Charlene often appears in Footlighter produc tion:, and is a member of the troop's mounted drill team. She attended Laurelwood academy, near Portland.
