Miss du Bief, gliding with ex quisite grace at the Palais des Sport, had seized an early, lead upon the completion of the com pulsory figures today. , Miss du Bief finished -with a total of 1,762.6 points. She was followed by two American girls, Sonya Klopfer of New York and Virginia Baxter of Detroit Miss Klopfer had 1,719.7 points and Miss Baxter had 1,713.7. Badger Quintet Bearcats Down : By UNITED PRESS Willamette University rolled to a 79 to 55 win over Pacific University Friday night at For est Grove in the final Northwest Conference game of the season. Willamette had already won the conference championship. The loss put the Badgers in a four-way tie for third place. PCL Baseball Teams Open Exhibition Play San Francisco (U.R) The first official spring practice game of the 1952 baseball season will be played today when the Sacramento Solons and the Oak land Acorns tangle in an after noon tilt at Boyes Hot Springs. This is the kick-off on the nation's baseball season and the start of full-scale spring training for a Pacific Coast league that is prepping for its first campaign under its new "open" classifica tion. Guard Tom Flynn of Lewiston, Ida., edged him out of scoring percentage honors from the field with a 39 per cent average on 119 attempts. Cougar Grapplers Top Vanport and Flyers Pullman, Wash. (U.R) Wash ington State college's PCC north ern division wrestling cham nions took on two opponents Saturday and defeated both of them. Informed sources said today that A-bombs small enough to be carried by the special planes already are available, in limited quantities or soon will be. Small in Sis The A-bombs, although smaller in size than the ones which forced -Japan to surrender in 1949, will enable U. S. planes to attack enemy targets almost any where in the world, these sources said. It "was reported reliably that production of the small A-bombs has been given priority over de- Movie Tax Refund Will Be Appealed By U.S. Treasury Washington U.R) Relax, Hollywood. There's no gold for movieland in the court decision ordering the Treasury Department to re fund $198,515 in income taxes paid by actor-playwright F, Hugh Herbert and his wife on the 1945-46 profits of the movie "Kiss and Tell." Treasury officials threw a big, wet blanket on the joy that had been spreading through the film colony since Federal District Judge Leon R. Yankwich handed down the decision in Los Ange les Thursday. To Appeal They 'indicated they won't lose any time appealing the ver dict and they appeared confident it would be overruled in the higher courts. They said there is plenty of legal precedent against Yank wich in previous supreme court decisions on similar cases. No Broad Precedent The officials added that even if Herbert should win, it would not set any broad precedent that would permit other Hollywood figures to collect big tax re funds. In any event, they said, the device Herbert used to try to re duce his tax liability the so- called "collapsible corporation" has been specifically outlawed by Congress ever since Jan. 1, 1950. . Derailed Tank Cars Cause Mile Wide Fire . Bonita, Tex. XU.R) A deep red fire roared hundreds of feet in the air from 40 tank cars which derailed and spilled oil and gasoline over a wide area one mile east of here early Sat urday. Nineteen of the Missouri Kansas railroad cars were burned and the remaining 21 were strewn about the right of way and burning fiercely six hours after the fire began, Fire Chief E. B. Tucker of Nocona, Tex., said. Cause of the derailment was not determined. Tucker said the 40 wrecked cars were at the end of a string of 103 pulled by a diesel locomotive on a Wichita Falls-to-Denison run. Bonita is about midway between the two cities. and carted the body to Green wich, a suburb of millionaires, and left it on the estate of Dr. James C. Greenway. HUGH PRUETT Astronomer, Extension Division Oregon Higher EducaUon System On the curtain of dawn there still hangs that charming little lantern, the exquisite planet Ve nus. This twin sister of our earth clears the horizon in the south east about an hour before sun rise, so will be seen only low in the heavens. In a few weeks Venus will be difficult to find in the morning sky, and not un til summer will it be an easy object in the western twilight. In the early evening, Jupiter is outstanding in the west. This gorgeous old king of' the gods is now setting between 8 and 9 p. m. Mercury is a little east of the sun and still too near it to be sighted easily, but will soon be in a favorable position. Watch this column for further infor mation during the next week or two. Saturn Appears Yellow, non-twinkling Saturn peeps above the skyline slight-, ly to the right of due east at about the same time that Ju piter dips into the west. Two and one-half hours later, red Mars rises irt the east-southeast. Mars, now more luminous than Saturn, will rapidly brighten un til early May, when it will be relatively near the earth and a very conspicuous object. AH that are discussed above are planets, other worlds that are part of our sun's family. From Saturn, the most distant, light travels to us at the rate of 186,300 miles per second in a little over an hour. Now let us look far beyond our solar sys tem toward the real stars, all huge suns but so distant they ap pear small. The nearest known star gets its light to us in a little over four years. Our sun with its planets is quite isolated in the immense ocean of space. Sirius in Splendor Let us spot the brighter stars around 8 p. m. Look well up in the south for the finest of all the distant suns. There Sirius, the dog-star, sparkles in splendor. West of the Pleiades, note the V of stars with bright, orange Aldebaran at the southern up per tip of the V. Regulus, the principal star of the Lion, is high in the east southeast. And if horizon ob structions are not present orange Arcturus is or soon will be peering above the horizon about in the east. Men on USS Boxei Consume Much Food San Diego, Calif. 0J.R) If you think members of your household consume too much food these days, considering prices, listen to the report of Capt. Dennis J. Sullivan, War wick, N. Y., commanding officer of the USS Boxer. Capt. Sullivan said that during .seven months, while the large aircraft carrier was operating off Korea, 561,275 pounds of pota toes and 482,487 pounds of meat were dished out by Boxer mess cooks. Coffee, the "staff of life" for Navy men, ran to more than 25 tons. The men did away with 228, 000 loaves of bread and 38,000 pounds of butter. Five hundred tons of vegeta bles were boiled and served and 388,730 pounds of fruit were used on the tables. To wash it all down J5.177.240 gallons of water were made by the carrier's distillation plant. The 1,300 Navajo students at the Intermountain Indian School, Brigham City, Utah, publish a newspaper called "Smoke Signals." Some people claim it refers to a divorcee. Anyway, you know what a "fishing widow" is. That, of course, is a wife whose hus band goes fishing every week end and leaves her all alone and trying to like it. Some Arizona fishing enthusiasts go on trips south of the border down Mex ico way. The fishing is said to be very good in some parts of Mexico. After fishing all day many of those who fish in Mex ico do not sit around a camp- fire. They go to one of the near by lively border towns where there is an abundance of wine, women and song. Or so I am in formed by a fishing widow of Tuscon, Ariz. She says her hus band is .one of these gay disciples of Izaak Walton. As for her, she has been consulting time tables to Reno.
