Newspaper Page TextJ Seven Local Grid Players Named for Shrine "B" Tilt Four Jackson county Class B high school football players were selected as regulars for the West All-Star team which will play the East All-Stars August 30 in Pendleton in a Shrine benefit game, according to United Press. Three other local B school starts were select ed as alternates. The list of regulars included Oregon State Drops Duck Five 55-52 Eugene (U.R) Oregon State college blasted the University of Oregon's hopes of gaining a second place tie with Idaho in the Pacific Coast conference Northern division by handing the Webfoots a 55-52 defeat here Friday night before 7,200 fans. Oregon needed a sweep of the week-end "civil war" series to get the tie with the Vandals. Oregon State took control of the game in the third period as the Webfoots tallied only one field goal. Jack Orr tied the score at 28-28 and then the Bea vers went ahead on Jim Padg ett's field goal. Orcgen RaJliM Oregon rallied In the closing minutes of the contest with the Beavers ahead 53-52. The Web foots made three passes at the hoop but all failed to connect. A long field goal by Orr just before the gun sounded gave Oregon State the 55-52 victory. The Beavers hit a little over 37 per cent of their shots while Oregon connected on 31 per cent of its shots. Oregon held a halftime lead at 28-25. The Webfoots Chet Noe won high point honors for the eve ning with 17 points and Tex Whitman sparked the Oregon State attack with 14. British Columbia Wins Rugby Contest With Cal Berkeley, Calif. U.R) The University of British Columbia rugby team defeated the Uni versity cf California 8 to 3 Sat urday to win the opening game of the World Cup series. British Columbia scored all of its points in the first half on goals by Forward Frank Gower and Wing Dave McFarlane. Front Row Bill Mulholland successful ly converted after McFarlane's goal, but missed in the other at tempt. Cal, defending the World Cup, k failed to score until midway in the second half when Les Rich ter booted in a 40-yard penalty kick for the lone Bear tally. " DUTCH PITCHER GOOD Phoenix U.R) Hannie Urb anus, the 24-year-old pitcher from Holland, retired all six bat ters he faced Friday as the New York Giant regulars defeated the Yannigans, 2-0, in a six inning intra-squad game. Max Hite, Phoenix, end; Junior Taylor, Jacksonville, end; Keith Bayne, Phoenix, tackle, and Leo Schmelzer, Phoenix, guard. Portland (U.R) Forty-eight players were selected here Sat urday for the East and West All-Star squads in the first an nual Class "B". Shriners hospital football game. The contest, patterned after the annua Oregon and Portland All-Star game here, will be played Saturday night, August 30, at the Roundup stadium in Pendleton. ' Dividing line for the two squads is the Cascade mountains. Head coach of the East squad will be Dan Rollins of Wallowa champions of the Class "B Dlavoffs last year. His assistant will be Tom Johnson of John Day. Bill Patterson of G e r v a i s, runner-up for the title, will be head coach of the West team, assisted by Jack Woodward of Phoenix. Proceeds of the game will go to the Northwest unit of the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children in Portland. Elliott, Runnels Figured To Help Senator's Cause Orlando, Fla. (U.R) There isn't any pennant talk in the spring training camp of the Washington Senators, but Man ager Bucky Harris believes that better times are ahead for his ball club. He based that belief Saturday on what he called "two surprise packages I might come up with this season. The No. 1 "package" as he calls it is Glenn Elliott, a south paw pitcher, who failed to make the grade in a previous trial with the Boston Braves. From Sacs The Senators bought Elliott from Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League after he won 14 games . while losing the same number in 1951. Harris went aft er the hurler upon the advice of Joe Gordon, manager at Sacra mento. The No. 2 package- is short stop James Runnels. - " "I wouldn't be surprised if Runnels wound up being our best percentage hitter in 1952," Harris said. "He doesn't have power, but he is a line drive hitter and he came along fast last season. Re member that two years ago he was playing in a bush league in Texas so he's come very fast and still is developing. The paddle-wheel rotates the screen in a self-cleaning action that means it can be un attended for long periods. Screens in various sizes are manufactured at Central Point for the commisison -and are placed strategically along streams throughout Oregon to keep fish from entering irrigation diversions. The Central Point plant with Peck in charge, does various mechanical and engineering jobs for the com mission in addition to screen manufacture. All fabrication and assembly work for screens is done at plant. The 50 by 120-foot aluminum building is designed for rapid assembly. It has welding and carpentry shops and large storage facilities for materials. Rotary fish screens cost from $210 to $1,200 each, depending .on size and location. More than 500 are maintained by the game commission. (U.R) Mrs. John Payson Adams' Miche who finished second in the $141,200 Santa Anita handicap Saturday by a length, was declared the winner by the stewards who ruled he was fouled by Intent in the run down the stretch. Prep Playoffs To Be Studied Ashland (U.R) A group of high school officials will meet at Eugene March 22 to discuss all phases of state athletic post season tournaments and playoffs. Roland Parks, chairman of the committee, said here Saturday Parks, chairman of the super intendents and principals com mitee, said the body is merely an organization to make recom mendations. He said that neither the super intendents and principals asso ciation nor his committee had taken any steps toward elimin ating the class A football play offs. He added that his commit tee doesn't have the power to legislate high school athletic rules. "SCOOTER" IN St. Petersburg (U.R) Phil Rizzuto ended his holdout Satur day by signing with the New York Yankees for $45,000. Riz zuto's new contract makes he and 21-game winner Vic Raschi the highest paid members of the world champions. Intent had finished a full length in front of the South American grey but as they crossed the finish line the stew ards posed the "inquiry" sign and there was a 10-minute delay in ruling the results of the race official until the officials - saw the movies of, the finish. Intent was placed second. After viewing the pictures in their little anteroom off the track, the stewards decided that Miche had been fouled and they took down Intent's number and put up Miche's as the winner of the race. The disqualification did not affect the other horses in the money in the rich mile and a quarter winter classic. Be Fleet was third, with Bed O'Roses fourth while the six to five fa vorite, Hill Prince, finished a well-beaten fifth. Ted Williams Inks Pact But Headed For Marines Sarasota, Fla. U.R) Ted Williams signed a one year con tract with the Red Sox Saturday just as if he expected to be with the team all year instead of an ticipating his recall to the Marine corps May 2. While nothing ever is an nounced by the Sox as to the size of his salary, it was presumed that he was given the same con tract as last year which reputedly was for $90,000. It will not be worth ten cents to him, if he goes into the service. .
