Y Mittmen Skirmish Roseburg on Saturday Hiiah .Tannines coach of the Medford YMCA boxing team, said today his entire crew of fighters is in topnotch physical condition and is eagerly await ing the clash with Roseburg, Sat urday, March 1, at 7:45 p.m. at the senior high gymnasium. Sponsored by the Crater Lions club, the 15-bout card is expected to be chock-full of thrills, action packed from the first fight to the last. Advance ticket sales indi cate a sellout. Two trophies will be awarded. The Crater Lions team trophy to the winning team and the "Shorty Miles" best boxer award to the outstanding boxer of the evening's card. YOUNG DEMPSEY Larry Lewis, above, 80 pounds of atomic energy, will be one of the local boys to watch Satur day night when the Medford YMCA boxing team scuffles with Bossburg at 7:45 p.m. Saturday at the Medford senior high school gymnasium. Lewis has been peg ged as "the boy to watch." The mighty mite has been described as a miniature Jack Dempsey Fifteen bouts are planned. Civil War Clashes Set Br UNITED PRESS "Civil war" clashes highlight the Northern Division basketball play this weekend with Washing ton's champions meeting Wash ington State at Seattle and Ore gon playing a home and home aeries with Oregon State. . The outcome of the Washing ton-Washington State s e r 1 e won't affect the standings but . Oregon could tie for second place with a clean sweep over Oregon State. Second-place Idaho has completed its season's play. Fight followers here are look ing forward especially to the Connie Mann-Roy Marshall fight in the featherweight division. Mann in his fight in Roseburg kayoed Jack Mills, a stablemate of Marshall. Another thriller, according to Jimmy Zack, assistant boxing in structor, will be the heavyweight scrap between Medford's Jerry Jennings and Mike Coleman. These boys fought a "pier 6" brawl in their first encounter in Roseburg. Both boys have been begging for a rematch and this can be billed practically as a grudge battle. One of the newer additions to Jennings' stable is middleweight Pat Viles, who goes against Rose burg's Percy Pendergast. Young Viles is considered one of the out standing prospects of the Med ford group because of his tremen dous punching power. Proceeds from the fights will be used to purchase athletic equipment.' Tickets are on sale at Lamports, Sam's Sporting Goods, the YMCA, Barker's Men's Store, Brown's Club, or from any mem ber of the Crater Lions club. Tickets will also be available at the high school box office prior to fight time. Officials for the fight will be referee, Fred Sears; judges.Jack Barr and Joe McDuffy Jr.; time keeper, Bob Kyle Jr.; and ring announcer, Manville Heisel. The Medford boys who will see ac tion are: Jimmy Miles, Herb Green, Larry Lewis, Bert Hart ley, Riley Bean, Alan Hennings, Bob Apple, Bobby Lyon?, Bob Boyd, Eddie Baker, Edward Erickson, Edwin Erickson, Con nie Mann, Junior McDonald, Pat vues and Jerry Jennings. Bruins Favored In South League San Francisco (U.R) Pacific Coast conference basketball starts its final series Friday night with the Bruins of, UCLA favored to capture the southern division crown and face Wash ington, northern division champs, in the playoffs. The Bruins host USC over the week-end while California hosts Stanford Friday night and. faces the Indians on their court Sat urday night. UCLA has a six and four rec ord and needs only one victory to leave California and Stan ford battling for second place. Cal is currently tied with Stan ford for the second spot, each with a five and five record. USC is in the cellar with four wins and six losses. If California and Stanford should split their series and USC win a, pair - from UCLA, the race would end up in a four-way tie. The fact is highly improbable as UCLA wins the biggest percentage of its games. School Children Live In Era of Confusion Albany, N. Y. (U.R) A prom inent educator believes school children are living in an era of "intellectual confusion" because of unsettled world conditions. Dr. Evan R. Collins, president of the New York State College for Teachers,, points to the "good old days" when "a war meant a war." "Today," he adds, "our school children understand a war by degrees. To them a war is a cold war, a hot war or a shooting war, and peace doesn't mean pros perity; war does. "Today they don't understand democracy - as in the good old days. Today, democracy is quali fied as an economic or social or political democracy." He says "the climate of intel lectual confusion" makes it nec essay for pupils to be taught in terms of relating their studies to the whole world picture. WOMEN CLEAN UP Southbury, Conn. He has one more regular-season game to play against Portland here Friday night Aeronautics Board Suspends Low-Cost Air Coach Service Seattle (U.R) A civil aero nautics board order grounding airlines low cost coach service affects Western Air Lines only slightly, Vice-President Arthur F. Kelly said Friday. Kelly said the only notification received from the CAB was a telegram suspending the pro posal of Western and five other major domestic airlines to ex tend present air coach fares un til Dec. 31, 1953. Applies to One Flight . The CAB action applies only to one of Western's several coach schedules, Kelly said. This is the night flight between Seattle, Tacoma, Portland and San Fran cisco-Oakland. Kelly said Western must con sider whether to discontinue this night 'flight before expiration of present low-rate tariffs on March 31, or to revise tariffs. United Silent United Airlines officials ex pressed "surprise" over the CAB's action but declined to dis cuss it. The board said it issued the order because the low-cost serv ice was not low enough. It said the companies had not complied with conditions of the original New Services Firm Opening Announced Miss Dana L. The post feels Ihese projects are their most important pro grams, and is anxious to obtain the maximum amount of funds. Those with a winter-long accu mulation of old papers and maga zines are asked to bundle them up, papers and magazines in sep arate bundles, put them on their front port or where they can be picked up easily, and leave the rest to the Legion's pick-up de tail. - Several trucks will tour the streets of both towns to gather all the paper and magazines available. Poultry Prospects, Plaps To Be Talked Prospects and plans for the poultry industry in Jackson county during the next year will be formulated at a meeting to day in the county agent's office in the courthouse. The Jackson County Poultry Program Planning committee, headed by Dunbar Carpenter, will meet at 8 p. m. to draft a report that will be submitted to the Jackson Country Agricul tural council Monday. The committee consists of Ike Dunford, J. S. Lydiard, Elmer Olsen and Charles Taylor. Youngsters Hurt As Cars Collide Michael McElroy, 4, and Dan ny McElroy, 2, sons of Mrs. Shir ley Jane McElroy, Jacksonville, Fla., received minor injuries Thursday in a traffic accident near the north Medford city lim its, according to an accident re port filed with city police. The accident occurred when a car driven by Mrs. McElroy col lided with a vehicle driven by Giles A. Gitzen, 129 North Grape street, the accident report stated. Damage .to the McElroy car was estimated at $400 and not listed for the Gitzen vehicle.
