Southern Oregon's Damaged Timber Nominal, But Other Areas Have Severe Problem Tho amount of windthrown. beetle-killed and fire-killed tim ber in the Rogue River National forest, as determined by field checks prior to, the fall close down of operations, is only nom inal, it was reported today by J. H. Wood, forest supervisor. Wood pointed out that checks are not . complete on conditions which may have developed since the fall close-down. Salvage sales planned during 1952 for removal of all timber fire-damaged on the national for est during 1951 will amount to about one-half million board feet. Wood stated. During 1951, sal vage of windthrown and beetle damaged timber on the "Rogue River National forest amounted to about 2,000,000 board feet, he said. , . , -Much Salvaged Regarding a bark beetle epi demic which has developed in windthrown timber in various sections of Oregon and Washing ton, a report by R. L. However, the report adds that "In the douglas fir region, be cause of the large volume and the Inaccessibility of much of the windthrow, the salvage problem has been greater. The douglas fir beetle flocked into the down trees, multiplied in great num bers and generally emerged be fore salvage could be completed. As a result of this build-up of beetles, a very serious outbreak has developed in green timber. Big Kill Estimated "The heaviest known infesta tions are in Coos, Douglas, Lane and Linn counties in Oregon. Al though data regarding the losses is fragmentary, it is tentatively estimated that bark beetles killed several hundred million feet of mature douglas fir. in 1951 in Coos county alone." The report continues, "The severe wind storm of December, 1951, blew down a great amount of green timber, thus intensify ing the salvage problem and pro viding additional favorable breeding material for the beetles. Making matters still worse, the extensive fires of 1951 killed much douglas fir that will prob ably be heavily attacked this spring. These recent windthrows and firekills, unless salvaged prior to April, 1953, in all likeli hood will produce large numbers of douglas fir beetles which will expand the outbreak." . Planning Outbreak Map According to the report, a sur vey is being undertaken to map and evaluate all outbreak centers of the douglas fir beetle in west ern Oregon. The survey will be conducted cooperatively by the Oregon State Board of Forestry, Weyerhaeuser Timber company and the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine. The first phase of the survey, scheduled to begin immediately and to continue as weather per mits, will be an intensive aerial survey, the report says. Other Medford senior high school students who received ratings were Beth Fen ton. sec ond in extemporaneous speak ing, and Bill McAllister, third in extemporaneous speaking and third in student congress. Chase Enters Plea To Charge of Murder Mt Vernon, Wash. (OR) Harold Chase, 22, pleaded Inno cent to a charge of first degree murder Tuesday. However, Paul M. Stocker of Everett, attorney for the former town marshal of Darrington, Wash, asked the court for the privilege of later changing the plea without prejudice to guilty by reason of insanity or mental Irresponsibility. The charges accused Chase of strangling Leonard M. Lewis, 50, In January, 1949, while both men were patients at Northern State hospital, Sedro Woolley. Chase earlier admitted slaying Lewis and Dr. Russell R. Brad ley, Everett optometrist. He also said he killed a French school teacher Identified only a "Joe" in San Francisco, but police have not been able to find any record of such a death. Bob Perkins of the Portland SPEBSQSA chapter will be master of ceremonies for the show. Ho New Evidence Seen in Wilson Case Olympia, Wash. U.P.) Gov. Arthur B. Langlie said Tuesday that he has seen no evidence which would show that condemn ed brothers Turman and Utah Wilson were unjustly convicted. However, Langlie said, he still is open to any new evidence. The brothers have been con demned to hang for the kidnap slaying of JoAnn Dewey, and the governor has been requested to commute their sentence to life imprisonment. Irving Goodman, Portland, Ore., attorney for the Wilson brothers, visited Langlie Monday and said he had submitted "new evidence." He said the evidence included "names of persons who might be implicated in the ab duction of Miss Dewey." Two, Injures Five A signal error was blamed for the crash. The crash occurred on the main Pusan-Seoul railroad line at the Kupo compound sta tion.
