Klamath Falls and Medford high school basketball quints will disregard their high state ratings this week-end and con centrate strictly on rivalry for the laurels in Southern Oregon conference Big Four campaign. Klamath, ranked sixth in Ore gon by sportswriters, and Med ford, rated seventh, scuffle today and Saturday in crucial frays that are expected to draw capa city' crowds to the Medford sen ior high gymnasium. Game time both days is 8:15 pjn. Coach Paul McCall brings his sky-scraping Pelicans here in an attempt to wrest the league lead ership from the Medfordites. The Tornado will rely on its speed, . hustle, qtfblity of steadiness, never-say-die spirit and whatever strategy Coach Frank Roelandt has cooked up in the past week in its effort to beat off.the chal lenge of the taller Pelicans. No Favorite Medford goes into the series with a one-game lead over the Pels but there will be no favorite except by way of sentiment. The clubs divided in their previous series at Klamath Falls, Klamath winning 48 to 33 and the Black Tornado taking, a 51 to 44 trt- umph. The Pels slipped behind Medford by losing one game to Grants Pass. The Tornado can clinch the Big Four flag by sweeping the series while Klamath by winning both frays this week will take a one game edge over Medford and virtually clinch the mantle. Med ford will retain its one-game lead with a series split. Influenza stabbed at Medford's reserve strength this week. Ted Landers probably will be' okay to see action but bis brother Ned apparently will miss both games. Doug Crippen was also a flu vic tim this week. Grade Prelims - Probable Medford starters to night will be Ed Bingham, Don Spinas, Derald Wooton, Dennis Conner and -Dick Atterbury. Klamath may open with Kay Bell, Jack Horton, Ralph Car roll, Jerry , Johnson and ''- Cal Gilmore. The preliminary tonight will be an east-west grade school Jam' boree with "Griffin Creek and Oak Grove teaming against Lone Pine and Howard. The other tiff will be on Satur day. It will be the final series of the season for the Red Raid ers. Both games will be played Bob Houbregs North Loop Marksman Los Angeles Bob Houbregs, lanky Washington center who is making a run-away of the North ern Division scoring race, also has taken the lead as the No. 1 marksman, statistics from the Pacific Coast commissioner's of fice disclosed today. Houbregs has caged 80 of 179 field goal attempts for a .457 aversge and has accounted for 19.9 points per game, more than five points better than his near est rival, teammate Frank Guin ness. Despite having missed three games with injuries, Houbregs has a chance to crack three Northern Division records, in eluding the all-time scoring mark of 265 points set by Jack Nichols of Washington in 1948. I Houbregs has 219 points and needs 47 more against Washing ton State February 29 and March 1 to establish a new mark. Oth er records threatened by him are: most field goals (98), set by wscs vmce Hanson in 1945; and field goal percentage (.467) set by LaDon Henson of Washington in IBal Free Throw Leader Danny Johnston of Oregon State leads the Division in free throws with ah average of .833. followed by. Washington's Frank Guisness. Two Oregon men. Ken Hunt and Bob . Peterson, hold substantial leads in other depart ments. Hunt has 37 assists in 10 games and Peterson is averaging 19.3 rebounds per contest. Washington . is tops in team marksmanship with 35.5 on floor shots while Oregon has hit 67.9 of its free throws. Wash ington has scored 873 points in 14 games for a 62.4 average and needs only 96 points to break the seasonal record of 968 held jointly by Washington (1951) and Oregon State (1947).
