Tourist Business of Nation Competitive Thursday. Juno it, 19S0 Tourist business In the United States is big business and is ex tremely competitive, Manley Robinson, director of tourist in formation for the state highway department, emphasized to Med ford Kiwanians yesterday at their weekly luncheon at Rogue Valley Country club. Natural resources are the basis of the Industry which does a $10 billion business annually, he stated. Robinson spoke of tough competition among the states. Oregon with Its resources has a 'pronounced advantage over other states and is "playing in the big league," he main tained. Medford Commended Robinson commended Med fordites for a fine tourist pro gram. People go where they are invited and stay where they are well treated, he said. Dr. Lee Mellish, president of the Medford Lions club, spoke on the financial benefits derived by the community from con ventions. Of the $11,000 paid by regis tering delegates, $6,000 was spent here for food and $4,250 for miscellaneous purposes among local businesmen, he re ported. An estimated $8,000 was spent by. delegates for housing and other expenditures made by Lions possibly amounted to $16, 000. Mellish indicated. Field Said Unlimited John Litster. proprietor of the House of Mystery on Sardine creek, said his Oregon Vortex has 150,000 visitors a year who possibly spend $250,000 in the valley. He said this amount can be doubled and tripled, and that the field in the tourist business is unlimited. The speakers were introduced by Ray Clark, tourist and con vention committee of the Jack son County Chamber of Commerce. Fly Tying Course To Be Given at YMCA A summer course in fishing fly tying will be given during coming weeks at the YMCA for boys nine years old or older, it j was announced today by "Y officials. The course, to be instructed by James Duckett, will be held i on Thursdays at 9:30 a. m. for j boys 9 to 12 years old, and at 10:30 a. m. for those over 12. All boys, "Y" members or not, are eligible for the classes. Some equipment will be furn ished for the course, and inform ation as to where to obtain their own inexpensively will be given those taking the course.
