NICHOLS United Prm Malar Wrilti Harman Nichols Washington, June 23 U.R) A few years ago, pug-nosed Italian kid walked into the Jew ish community center here, went up to Ed die Rosenblum and said: "I want to learn how to box, mister." Eddie, ex ecutive direct or of the cen ter, bars no body from membership In the center with its steam baths, weight lifts, basketball and handball courts, swimming pools everything athletic. So he invited the young man In and introduced him to big Jim McNamara, a touh, Irish-Catholic who has been athletic di rector of the Jewish center for 34 years. The kids around the place re fer to Jim as "Father Ginsberg," with proper reverence. Jim took the youngster in hand, put him over the jumps. In two years, the Jewish center had a National AAU boxing champ in the fold an immi grant Italian kid who couldn't lick his way out of a wet paper sack until he met "Father Gins berg." Religion No Difference That's the way Eddie Rosen blum operates says Eddie, a tubby little Jewish man who graduated from a Catholic col lege. 'What's the difference what church a kid goes to so long as we can make him healthy, build his character and, more import ant, keep him out of trouble and off the streets? Our swimming pools and gymnasiums are open to all comers. Sometimes we have a rough time making ex penses, but we somehow always make them." As of today Eddie's up to his ars helping to direct the 62nd National AAU track and field meet at nearby College Park, Md., today and tomorrow. In deed, Eddie was the moving force In bringing the big track jamboree here as part of Wash ington's sesquicentennial cele bration. War I Veteran A veteran of World War I, he knew what It was to sit on his thumbs with nothing to do no place to go for fun. So during the last war Eddie saw to it that GIs passing through town had a good time. The Jewish commun ity center opened its doors to all comers and entertained more than 1,000,000 servicemen. The recreation rooms were free; so were refreshments every after noon. Entertainment was provid ed with no questions asked about race, creed, etc. Eddie was born and raised in Bayonne, N. J., at a time when that city of 85,000 was a mere village. He learned democracy there as a kid. Every Naiioalliy "We organized what we called the Tearaway Athletic club," he said. "We had every nationality, which was fine, but no club house, which wasn't fine. We used to meet on street corners." The boys formed a baseball team, made up of Polish, Russian, Irish, German and British kids. The manager and pitcher was Charles C. Jones, now a member of the New Jersey state legisla ture. "I was the only Jew," Eddie said. Pear, Apple Spray Advised by Agent Homeowners who have a fam ily orchard of pear and apple trees in their backyards should apply the second cover spray for codling moth now, C. B. Cordy, county extension agent for hor ticulture, said today. DDT should be used at the rate of two pounds to 100 gal lons of spray. Where small spray ers are used, three ounces of DDT should be applied to each grown pear and apple tree. The amount of water used is not as important as the total amount of DDT, Cordy said. If three ounces of DDT is mixed in three to five gallons of water, it should give sufficient spray solution for one tree. Formula Given For orchardists, 10 pounds of 50 per cent DDT per acre is suggested for use in speed spray ers. Jerry Wade, company auditor, estimated loss at between S200, 000 and $300,000. Two Wiilamina firemen were injured when a conveyor rig fell on them. Jeff Myers suffered bruises and Dick Hofrichter suffered undetermined injuries. Lloyd Lewis, plant superin tendent, said the fire started when the switch for the main saw rig was turned on. He said there was a tremendous flash, then flames spread swiftly the mill.
