Jaffa went before the group for questioning on the case in ( which he played a key role. Convention Set For Girls' Stale; McCall Speaker Salem. Ore.. June 14 (U.R) The 190 girls from all over Ore gon participating in the six-daylong girls' slate today will go through convention and cam paign day. The girls, divided into nation alist and federalist parties, will hold separate nominating con ventions and then wage a cam paign for votes. Finances Chief Problem Last night Lawson McCall. ad ministrative assistant to Gov. Douglas McKay, told the girls that adequate finances are the chief problem at all government levels in Oregon. McCall told the girls taking part in the eighth annual pro gram on the Willamette univer aity campus that there was a great need for finding methods to cut down sharp winter unem ployment, to insure orderly han dling of natural resources, to ex pand Oregon's schools and col lege? and to provide proper su pervision of the state's custodial cases. Must Study Facts He pointed out several facts the delegates should be aware of in their search for new revenues for the state. They included the ability of the taxpayer to pay, the possible adverse effects of a state property levy on local tax ing bodies' revenues, and the fact that oppressive taxes trend "to drive away the industry that is needed to provide jobs in Ore gon's expanding economy." Purpose of the girls' state is to teach young women the responsi bilities in American citizenship and good government. Oregon State 4-H Summer School Opens Corvallis, Ore., June 14 (U.R) The 35th annual Oregon State 4-H summer school opened here last night with an assembly in Oregon Slate college's Gill coli seum. An estimated 1800 attended the first meeting of the 10-day aession that ends June 23. Members from all of Oregon's 38 counties will attend the school, receiving instruction from the OSC faculty, represen tatives of commercial firms and other professional experts. Classes will be conducted In OSC classrooms and laboratories. The 4-H members are being housed in dormitories, fraterni-j ties and sororities. The Grange GRIFFIN CREEK GRANGE Griffin Creek Grange Home Economics club will meet with Mrs. Lucy Dickson, Sunset drive, for a 1 p.m. luncheon Thursday. Grange members were also re minded of the freezing demon stration to be given in Grange hall Friday at 7:30 p.m. Roxy Ann Grange Last regular meeting of Roxy Ann Grange was preceeded by some interesting and instructive films shown by Purina Mills through Faber's Farmers' Slippy company. During regular order of busi ness, R o s c o e Roberts was ap pointed alternate delegate to the state Grange convention. Refreshments were served by Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Tedrick. Mr. and Mrs. Warren and Mrs. Han sen. Next regular meeting will be Friday, June 16, especially dedi cated to all fathers. Ladies of the Grange are planning something to the liking of all the men. Come if you expect a treat. Precedent in Dealing With Sex Offender Salem, Ore.. June 14 (U.R) Judge Joseph B. Fclton has set a local precedent in dealing with a convicted sex offender, and it prevented the involved 10-year-old girl from appearing against the man before the grand jury in circuit court. According to details of the case released today, the man was fined $250 plus court costs and given a six-months suspended jail sentence for indecent ex posure. Jail sentence was suspended on the basis of the man's carrying out seven conditions. The prin cipal condition stipulated that the 30-year-old veteran must re ceive psychiatric treatment, with the doctor and the man reporting to Judge Felton periodically. Purpose of the probation is to rehabilitate a first offender with the goal of preventing a repeat or more serious sex offense in the future. Crooked Creek Dragged For Body of Youth, 7 Prineville, Ore., June 14 (U.R) State police and volunteer fire men planned to continue drag ging Crooked creek near here today for the body of seven-year-old Bobby Braxton, believed drowned yesterday. The boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Braxton, Prineville, was wading along the edge of t h e stream when the swift current swept him off his feet.
