Tickets will go on sale at Brown's cafe and Lamport's sporting goods store Tuesday. Joe Chez Selected On All-Star Squad Berkeley. Cal.. June 10 (U.R) Washington State college' NCAA 8th district baseball cham pions landed five places on the all-star squad selected by coaches and announced today. The team was chosen from 92 nominated players on 32 four year colleges in the eighth dis trict, but the northern division of the Pacific Coast conference; and the California Intercollegi ate Baseball association domin ated the selections. The five men from Washing ton State to make the first team were Don Paul, third base; Gordy Brunswick and Bob McGuire, outfielders: Clayton Carr, catch er, and Pitcher Lee Dolquist. Stanford University, Palo Al to, Cal., June 10 Joe Chez, Stanford university's star sopho more baseball hurlcr, has re ceived an honor in addition to his selection on the NCAA eighth district all-star first team. The former Medford, Or.e., high school athlete was chosen by his Stanford teammates as most valuable player of the team. Chez was leading chucker for the California Intercollegiate Base ball association champions this season. California Crew Downs Wisconsin Madison, June 10 (U.R) A powerful California crew, work ing smoothly off a quartering wind, beat off a last-minute Wis consin rally to win by half a boat length on choppy Lake Mo nona today. The Golden Bears, national in tercollegiate champions, ran up a quarter-length lead at the be ginning of the 2,000-meter course on a 34 beat. But the determined Badgers upped their stroke to 36 and finally to 37 to gain a mid point lead of half a length. The pace was too tough for Wisconsin, as the smooth-operating California crew eased past, first a quarter boat length, then a half and then a full length ahead until Wisconsin's final sprint chopped it down to a third of a length at the finish. Sweet Home Quits Oregon State League Albany, Ore., June 10 (U.R) The Oregon State baseball league announced today that Sweet Home has dropped out of the loop because of illness among team managers and oth er officials. Five teams remain in the league, including Eugene, Cor vallis, Silverton, Bend and Albany. Salt Lake Boxer To Met Dunlap In San Francisco San Francisco, June 10 (U.R) Promoter William P. Kyne pre sents another triple-header fight card in the Civic auditorium on Monday night featuring some of the west's top - notch boxing talent. The headline card sends Young Rex Layne, the Salt Lake City whiz who lost the only fight of his career here to Grant Whit lock two months ago, against hard-hitting Bob Dunlap of Ala meda. This 10 -rounder could end very fast because Dunlap is rated one of the toughest punch ers in the west and Layne isn't far behind. The secopd 10-round sends Grant Butcher, former AAU champ, against huge Andy Wal ker. In the third main, Sal Perea faces Baby Ike in a middle weight match. Texas, Arizona All-Stars Picked Dallas, Tex., June 10 (U.R) Defending national N. C. A. A. champion Texas and the Univer sity of Arizona each placed three men on the N.C.A.A. all district 6 baseball team an nounced today. Texas, which won two of three games against Arizona this week for the district title, placed pitcher Murray Wall, second baseman Kal Segrist and third baseman Ben Tompkins. Arizona placed shortstop Chet Vasey, outfielder Lloyd Jenney and catcher Bob Mur ray. The remainder of the all-star nine: Adrian Burk, Baylor, first base; Gerald Jensen. Southern Methodist, and Wally Moon. Texas A & M. outfielders, and Norris Graves, Texas Christian, pitcher. Stanford Crew To Enter Ohio Regatta Stanford, Cal., June 10 (U.R) Stanford university's crew will leave tonight via air for Mariet ta, O., to compete in the na tional intercollegiate regatta next Saturday. The "orphan" crew finally col lected enough money to make the trip after a month-long cam paign. Stanford university does not officially list rowing as a college sport and therefore mem bers of the crew had to do their own financing. More than S3, 500 was collect ed to make the trip possible. Montana Resigns From Pacific Coast Conference Missouria, Mont., June 10 (U.R) Montana State university announced today it would resign from the Pacific Coast Athletic conference tomorrow to loin the Skyline Six conference. The university said its appli cation to enter the Skyline Six was unanimously approved at Salt Lake City today. MSU President James A. Mc Cain said he received word late this afternoon from Commission er E. L. (Dick) Romney of the Mountain States conference that Skyline Six officials had ap proved Montana's application and also that of the University of New Mexico. Dr. J. Earll Miller, MSU fac ulty representative to the PCC, will present Montana's official letter of resignation to the PCC conference which opens tomor row in Victoria, B. C. Whitman Football Mentor Switched Walla Walla, Wash., June 10 (U.R) Archie Kodros, head foot ball coach at Whitman college, has been named director of ath letics at Whitman, it was an nounced today. Whitman President Chester C. Maxey said Kodros would suc ceed Prof. Leo Humphrey, act ing director for the past year. Kodros came to Whitman in 1948 as line coach under Dave Strong. When Strong resigned last summer, Kodros stepped up to the head coaching spot. Proximity Wins Golden West Trot Arcadia. Cal.. June 10 (U.R' Proximity, the greatest trotting mare of all times, scored a smashing three-length victory to day in the S50.000 Golden West trot and set a new world's rec ord for a mile and a quarter. The brilliant, eight-year-old mare had to overcome trouble in the last half-mile when pocketed i on the rail but still had enough drive to circle the field of eight and come on to win over Chris Spencer, winner of last year's Golden West trot. Word that Rogue River high school may become a class A school for athletics starting this coming winter brings up the question of just what kind of a set-up there will be in schedul ing games, particularly because of the long distance and ex penses involved. It is well known that neither the smaller A schools on this side of the mountains nor Klamath Falls on the east side are over enthused about traveling back and forth. It isn't that the teams don't want to play each other but there is a big expense involved plus time in traveling that with both basketball and baseball is hard to make up in drawing out fans to see games and thus get ting revenue. That is quite a program for a city the size of Ashland and it is to the credit of the city also that so many organizations such as the Red Cross, Junior Cham ber of Commerce, the school de partment, public library, golf course, Grange, American Legion and other organizations are help ing. We see by United Press dis patches thai Medford's Roonie Lee of local Dodgers pitching fame has been beaten to the big leagues by Vernon Law who hurled for Santa Rosa in 1948. For a time we thought the ex-Far West leaguer from Medford would be first. Law, a righthander, was with New Orleans last year and this season has been called up to the Pittsburgh Pirates of the Na tional league. Bob Chesnes was sent back to New Orleans by the Pirates to make room for Law. Incidentally, Lee has been listed by Branch Rickey of the Dodgers' organization as good trading material so you may not see the former local boy playing for the Brooklyn team but we'll wager more than a little that he will be in the "big time" before many seasons. Injury to Manager Tommy Nelson's foot in last Thursday night's game with Redding cer tainly Just about breaks "the camel's back" as far as the Med- f o r d Rogues' immediate pros pects are concerned, tven it the local pilot gets back into the lineup it probably will not be soon. The local manager was hurt when a Redding player slid ing lnio third base evidently hi! him hard on the right foot. Just another tough break for the Rogues who certainly have had their share of the same this season. We haven't been to motor cycle field meet in some 20 years or since living around Port try to climb a butte near the land when the cyclists used to city.
