Library Building Addition Slated For Early July Construction of the addition planned for the city library may get underway early in July, John C. Boyle, chairman of the library board, haj reported. Preliminary plans, revised from earlier plans, have been approved by the board, the plan ning commission and the city council. Final plans are being completed and will be ready shortly. Bids then will be asked. Plant Available Preliminary clans are avail able at the city building inspec tor's office for public inspection. The addition, which will pro vide about 50 per cent more floor space, will be of modern type architecture designed to blend in with a civic center de velopment, Boyle said. This civic center is part of a long range plan for the old park area on west iviam street. Ruilt on the south Dart of the present building, the addition will provide more reading room space, librarians quarters and a repair room on the top floor. There will be more room for shelves and stands. The children's library will be moved to the new lower floor area and the old children's sec tion will be used for storage and more library space. Heating fa cilities will be included in tne addition. In Dream Staq. City officials have pointed out that tne civic center plan, wnicn includes a city hall and munici pal auditorium, at the old park site is in the dream stage and is "wishful hoping." The eventu al plan is for the present library to be removed and a new one erected. The addition now con templated, however, will be a part of the new structure located to conform to tne overall plan. Money for the library addition is provided by a S102.000 bond issue approved several yea rs ago. Bias nave oeen asxea ior twice previously on the project. Each time they were rejected because the offers would not leave enough to furnish the new structure or allow for renova tions of the old. Speed Offered The city adminstration is of fering the board what help it can to speed along the library addition, according to Mayor Diamond Flynn. Assistance has Been lent by the building de partment and by the biulding committee of the council. McKayllMdress State Labor Group Salem, Ore., June 10 (U.R)- Gov. Douglas McKay will leave Salem Sunday for La Grande where he will address the state federation of labor at the open ing of its annual convention Monday. From La Grande, Gov. McKay win go to Ontario, ore., to ap pear on the program of the an nual convention of the state Grange Tuesday. Gov. McKay will leave Wed nesday for White Sulphur Springs, W. Va to attend the annual governor's conference June 18-21. During his absence from the state, until June 28, William E. Walsh of Coos Bay, president of the state senate, will aerve as governor. J. They expect to be married soon. Incidentally, Art's team was beaten by the Yanks, 6-4. Gen. Eisenhower Points to Unbalanced Budget Dangers Washington. June 10 U.R) President Dwight D. Eisenhower of Columbia university has made another of those speeches which spotlight him as a moderate con servative candidate for reDub lican nomination for president of the United States. Ike spoke this week before the 8.018 members of Columbia's 1950 graduating class. That's more people than live in the gen eral's home town. Abilene, Kan. Dangers Pointed Out Ike talked of the dangers of an unbalanced budget, against treason in high places. He scoffed at those who shout "reactionary" at men who challenge govern ment officials grasping for more power. Ike put it this way: "Determination to support and sustain the political and -economic freedom of the individual does not make us reactionaries except to those of fuzzy minds or among those egotists who seek the right to dominate us al ways of course, for our own good." Ike has been laying his polit ical philosophy before the American people for more than a year now while denying that he is a candidate for public office. Last December 22 President Tru man' told newsmen he did not believe the general was a can didate for president. Mr. Truman said Ike had denied it and that the general's word was always good. Supporters Not Sure Mr. Truman's supporters in Americans for Democratic Ac tion are not so sure. In their con vention last December they rec ognized the Eisenhower name as a political threat. They acted accordingly. An ADA resolution denounced the general as a new member of the reactionary forces who "advocate a jungle state." Only a couple of years ago ADA was sparking a stop-Truman movement and seeking to make Eisenhower the democratic presi dential nominee. Danger to Freedom On February 13 Ike aimed a speech directly at Mr. Truman. To a New York audience he said the increasing power of the fed eral government was a "creeping paralysis" and a greater danger to freedom than the A-bomb. He has not said whether he is a republican or democrat. When he registered last year in New York it was without party affili ation. But as president of Co lumbia he has waded shoulder deep into national politics. A scries of statements reached a political high last December when Ike directly attacked the Truman administration on do mestic spending and individual security policies. No Soft Shoulder lor This Man To Cry On Grants Pass. Ore., June 10 (U.R) C. T. Weitz, owner of the Argo mine near Galice in western Josephine county, is crying today but he isn't look ing for a soft shoulder to cry on. A soft shoulder is the cause of his troubles. Weitz and a passenger Ike Franklin were in Weitz' car Thursday morning when a soft shoulder on the Galice road gave way flipping the car over twice and landing it on its wheels in the gully some 30 feet below. Weitz( his glasses still intact on his nose, crawled out unhurt and surveyed his mangled car. Franklin was also uninjured. A wrecker pulled the car back on the road and Weitz drove it back to town with all windows smashed, stoplight shattered and the lop caved in. He bought the car less than a week ago. DEEH STROLLS STREET Cannon Beach. Ore., June 10 (U.R) A spiked door took a stroll through the residential district here Friday, sampling foliage and flowers in backyards, then kicked up his heels and dashed into a blackberry thicket. Details oi Airline Consolidation Plan Revealed in Story More detailed information on the Western Air lines proposal that it take over the operations of West Coast airlines and South west airways was received here last week in the form of an article in a recent issue of "American Aviation, journal of the aviation industry. According to the Article. West ern's plans to operate feeder service over the same route now covered bv the established routes of Southwest and West Coast was first revealed at a recent civil aeronautics board prehearing in connection with the proposed Southwest-West Coast merger. Several Alternatlvei The American Aviation article Indicated that the Western ap plication raised several alterna tives for the CAB. If the mo tion should be granted at all. Western could either be given the feeder lines under its own name and operate the service under its own certificate or It could onerate it through its new ly-formed subsidiary. Western Air Lines of Pacific. Western has also asked that its motion be consolidated with the numerous other cases involv ing airlines on the coast that have been pending before the CAB for months. Aviation cir cles here believe that so many supplemental motions on the original cases have been filed that it may be years before any definite action is taken. June 10 UR) The demand for farm workers is growing, as the strawberry har vest gradually gains momentum, the slate employment service said today.
