This recalls that at the time of the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 the London Assurance company of London, England, paid off poli cies to San Franciscans to the amount of S8.291.000. The Royal Insurance company of Liverpool paid off policies amounting to S7. 500. 000 on the same disaster. Bathing Suits How is your wife going to look in a bathing suit? The horse was about to be shot when Mrs. Peter Wehner. wife of a dentist, begged the animal's life be spared, saying she and her hus band would take care of him. The horse was given to the Weh ners. The husband made a cast of dental stone for the horse's leg. After a long period Prince Pine recovered the full strength of his leg and raced again. Rogue River City; Budget Approved By Vote of 4444 Rogue River, June 9 Ballots cast at the budget election were counted at the regular meeting of the city council, Tuesday eve ning. The budget passed 44 to 14 and Mayor Fred Dengler and the councilmen expressed appre ciation for the vote of confidence. A report was made on the streets. Nine loads of oil have been used. Some streets have been graded and gravel used in the worst places. Gravel was furnished by Willis Stiehl, who donated 10 loads of extra gravel. The council was requested to issue a warning to residents re garding fire hazards such as dry grass and weeds, and to request property owners to clean their vacant lots and around their buildings. The state deputy fire marshal is expected to visit Rogue River soon, it was re ported. Talk Water Rates A discussion was held on the water rates, though there were no complaints made to the city council about them. It was de cided to increase the minimum amount of water by 100 feet and to lower the charge. Rates will be $2 for the first 500 feet of water and 10 cents per 100 feet or fi act ion thereof for all ad ditional water used. A 10 per cent discount is allowed on bills paid before the 10th of each month. The new low rates will apply to this month's water bills. There are now 200 water us ers, all metered. Growth of the city was shown by a report of 1938 sfating there were 88 me ters at that date. Use of meters was discontinued during the war years. Chinese at Burns Reunited With Wife Burns, Ore., June 9 U.R Yee Wai and his wife are to gether again after 26 years of separation. Yee's wife, Yee Gong Shee, arrived in the United States this week from Canton, China. She had not seen her husband since he left for the United States in 1924. Oregon City Man Killed in Accident Oregon City, Ore., June 9 (U.B Bernard Thompson. 56. of Oregon City, was fatally injured near Oak Grove yesterday when a tractor he was using to pull stumps overturned. Clackamas County Coroner Ray Rilance said Thompson had used a chain to pull out the stumps with the tractor. While pulling one of the stumps the front of the tractor reared up and fell backwards on Thompson. The comedian switched to Chesterfields on a big money contract with the Liggett and Myers Tobacco company for a series of radio programs start ing next fall over NBC. Crosby, Hope's friendly radio rival, has been Chesterfield's big star. Mutual Cancellation Hope cancelled his $10,000,000 contract with Lever Brothers Soap company this week by mu tual consent. "Have to keep working, you know," Hope quipped. "Uncle Sam's been spending it as fast as I can make it." Mack Miller, Hope's personal representative, said the come dian would make more money on a capital gains arrangement with the tobacco firm and the program could be taped, record ed "or anything just so it gets on the air." Hope also signed an exclusive long-term contract with NBC for his services in both radio and television, Joseph H. McConnell, president of the National Broad casting company, announced.
