These broadcasts will be heard on Fri day, Saturday and Sunday of next week . . . starting at 5 p. m. on Friday. Also one week from tonight. It's the big show from Madison Square Garden ... on the Orig inal Amateur Hour. The show, for the benefit of the New York Foundling hospital, is the cli maxing act in a series of 17 pro grams. Ted Mack anticipates a crowd of at least 18.000 people will be on hand to push favor ites across that big finish line. Might make a note to take a listen, yourself, and see how your favorite amateur of the past months does in this national showing. Have we reminded you yet that tickets for reserved seats and general admission to the big Roundup this week-end are available at Barker's? We have? Well. In that case, make believe we didn't say a word. Just be sure you have the tickets. Now don't go calling the fire department. That siren you heard was Just announcing an other winner on the Tune-O show. Incidentally, there will be a lot more sirens coming up next week , . . when Tune-O takes off in really grand style. We come up with the darn dest pieces of information: Do you know that playing cards is the most popular pastime of men! In fact, 83 per cent of adult males play cards. Poker is the favorite game . . . followed by bridge . . . gin rummy and pinochle. Wha hoppen'd to Canasta? fxcfemenf of Fire Too Much for Lady Portland. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Rtidtre should addrtn inqulriai to l Dr. William Brady, 265 II Cjmlno, B.v.rly Hills, Call. Thursday, June 8 1930 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREB CROSSWORD PUZZLE answer to re: , lots rrzzLi INCREASING CHILD HEALTH AND INTELLIGENCE Another thing that drives me to the bowling green many time when I or. Brady might otherwise remain here in my lonely cu bicle pounding away at this thankless task, trying to teach you heedless people elemen tary physiol ogy and hy giene, is the notion that a dose or more particularly "shot'' of this or that vita min, or a shot gun mixture of vitamins, gives one pep. This notion, too, is fostered, I find, by the charla tans who cater to the popular demand for shots. You get lust as much "pep" from that as you get from a plate of pork and cab bage or a hot dog when you are Hungry. If Dr. Harrell's experiment on the New York school children and the results she obtained from animal experiments with the entire vitamin B complex are heeded by physicians, nutri tion and health authorities and educators it may increase the level of health and intelligence of future citizens. Parents at least should know (hat we now have good and suf ficient evidence that an ade quate daily intake of at least one of the components of the B com plex. thiamine, is not only essen tial for good general health and vigar. but. if child or youth has had the usual refined American diet with its excessive propor tions ot nigh calory caruony drate items (items made chiefiv from refined white flour and re fined sugar or syrup), a daily ra tion of B complex or just B (lhiamine to supplement the diet will generally improve func tional health and mental alert ness as well. This is nutrition, not medicine Such a daily ration of vitamins or minerals or both is not to be confused with medicine. It is simply the nutritional element or elements the daily diet should provide but, thinks to modern refinements, processes and habits, does not provide in the quantities required by grow ing children or adult. If the modern diet of child and adult were not so highly process ed and refined, natural food would provide adequate amounts of these essentials of goo dnutrition. Such a natural diet would be "protective" that Is. It would protect the in dividual against what we have lately learned to recognize as mi tritional deficiency disease. And let me tell you 999 out of each thousand American chlldin, youths and adults could do with more protection. Take a hundred children ten fifteen or twenty years old. di vide them into two groups, feed one group only white bread or tnings made of wnite flour, ana refined sugar or syrup or things containing it, and feed the other group only whole wheat bread or things made of whole wheat flour .and crude brown sugar or old fashioned (open kettle) mo lasses or tnings containing it besides the usual milk, vege tables, meat, fruit, etc. for a season, say three months. Joan Ford and Gladys Bennett were among those graduating from Rogue Fiver high school. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cowle. who recently bought the Foots Creek store, nave Improved the store and their auto court, and plan to enlarge the slore. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Howard and Infant daughter returned to their home at Dunsmulr, Cal., June 3. end of the experiment the chil dren who have had only whole wheat and unrefined sugar would be more effecient physic ally and mentally than the ones who have been restricted to white flor and refined sugar and syrup products I'd give you ten to one on that. If you are Interested In the growth, physical development and mental alertness of a child first look into the child's nutrition.
