Ar thur Straus opened the assembly with a lew words of wisdom and advice. The girls' trio, Elaine Kelley. Pat Berry and Joan Burk, sane two numbers. Mr. Straus then presented the Table Rock Estates' prizes to winners of the recent essay con test sponsored by the company, Seventh crade winners were: First. Mildred Gail: 2nd, Janet Nelson; 3rd, Blossom Governor. Eighth grade, 1st, Don Gascon; 2nd, Don Phelps; 3rd, Phillip Thompson. Freshmen, 1st, Doug las Smith; 2nd, Anccl Rosecrans; 3rd, Lavel Massey. Sophomore, 1st, Dolores Reames; 2nd, Bever ly Moser; 3rd, Tommy Hooker. Junior, 1st, Joan Burk; 2nd, Beth Eskew; 3rd, Jerry Eskew. Beth Eskew was awarded the bronze and sil ver pin, Raymond Jore the bronze pin and Theola Johnson the silver pin. Mr. Straus presented the Dan- forth Foundation awards which were booklets entitled,- "I Dare You," to Raymond Jore and Car ma Ferguson. Outstanding student awards were made to Beth Eskew and Raymond Jore, the two students chosen by the student body. A skit was presented by the senior class for the special en tertainment of Miss Davis. Chiropractors Elect Dr. Robert A. Wood President's Post Dr. Robert A. Wood. Poulsen, Baker, delegate to the national association; Dr. C. E. Christiansen, Portland, chaplain, and Dr. George Thomas, Astoria, and Dr. Wayne Nelson, Burns, delegates-at-large. The OACP was to conclude its three-dav convention here today with activity following a 12:30 i. m. luncheon at the Aledlord lOtel. A meeting on treatment of ath-1 letic injuries was scheduled for i 10 a. m. today. A banquet at Jackson hotel and ball at Mer rick's hall wound up yesterday's activity of the conclave which opened rriday. The association auxiliary at its meeting yesterday elected of ficers, Mrs. P. L. Poulsen, Baker, president; Mrs. C. R. Van Pat ten, Ontario, first vice-president; Mrs. Robert Elliott, Portland, third vice-president: Mrs. E. N. Terrill, Ashland, secretary; Mrs. A. J. The auxiliary has adopted the program of furnishing the kitch en at Western States college, Portland. On Friday the Order of Mili tary Chiropractors' Oregon unit was organized with Dr. William son, Eugene, commander; Dr. Daniel Wilson, Newberg, vice commander, and Dr. R. W. Klier, secretary and finance officer. Dr. Pefley, national commander of the order, presided. GIs Attending Summer School Cautioned Veterans planning to attend summer school under the GI Bill" should start making neces sary arrangements now, the veterans administration cau tioned Saturday. First, thev should determine whether their VA certificates of eligibilty are in order. And, if eligibility are in order. And, if should learn from VA whether they will be required to undergo advisement and guidance. A veteran who Is now in school and who intends to con tinue this summer in the same school and the same course need merely register at his school. His present certificate of eligibility. on file with the VA. is sufficient. City Budget in Ashland To Be Under Limitation Ashland, June 3 J. B. Austin, Ashland city recorder and budget director, said this week the city budget committee has decided to keep the Ashland budget for the coming fiscal year within the constitutional six per cent lim- frequently left lying in tool boxes, in barns or alongside highways and railroad tracks. Increasing tax delinquency has been noted this year, Austin said, and reported that only $51,000 has been paid on total taxes lev ied of some $67,000. He also noted that tax experts have fre quently recommended that total levies should not exceed 60 mills per dollar-value of taxable prop erty. The combined city-school district levy next year will be close to 70 mills, he said. Bengston, executive vice- president of the Jackson County Federal Savings and Loan asso ciation, have received their appointments to 1950 mittees of the United States Sav ings and Loan league. The ap pointments came from Henry A. Bubb, Topeka. Kas., president of the league, the nation-wide trade organization of the savings as sociation business. Kyle will serve on the person nel policies committee and Beng ston as vice-chairman of the at torneys' committee. The studies of the personnel policies committee look toward the constant improvement of personnel in savings associations in terms of their ability to serve the public and to interpret the ideas of thrift and home owner ship. The attorneys' committee acts as a clearing house for the study of savings association court cases and legislation, besides ad vising with the staff of the league on the contents of the bi-month ly publication which it sends to all savings and loan attorneys in the country. Sheriff Cautions on I Blasting Cap Danger The county sheriff's office and the National Sheriffs' associa tion are combining their efforts in a campaign to warm both children and parents of the dan ger of handling blasting caps. Sheriff Howard Gault said that blasting cap accidents suf fered by children increase every year during summer vacation. He explained that blasting caps are small round copper or alu minum cylinders or tubes about one-quarter of an inch in diam eter and an inch or two in length. They may or may not have a fuse attached and they may have plain or colored cov ered wires leading from one end. The tube or cylinder is loaded with a powerful and sensitive explosive- used to explode dyna mite.
