Tornado Track Squad Dinner Thursday to Hear Bowerman Medford high school track team, state champions and best in the Rogue and Hayward re lays plus every dual meet held this season, will be honored along with the local coaching staff at a banquet in the Med ford hotel downstairs dining room Thursday evening, June 1. Sponsoring the event at which Bill Bowerman, former Medford high track and football coach, will be the principal speaker, will be t h e Athletics Booster club of Southern Oregon. Coaches At Guostl Coaches to be honored along with the boys are Bob Newland, Lee Ragsdale, Fred Spiegelberg, Frank Roelandt and Alex Mc Donald. Others invited to at tend are E. H. Hedrick, super intendent of schools: Elliott B e c k e n, assistant superintend ent, and Lester Harris, senior high principal. A telegram received last week from Bowerman said "Am hon ored to accept your (the club's) Invitation." The dinner will start at 7 p.m. and in addition to boys on the track squad, coaches and other guests, those attending will in clude Booster club members, fa thers of track squad boys wish ing to attend and a limited num ber of others. Tickets on Sale Tickets for the dinner may be purchased in advance at any time at the main desk at the Medford hotel. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis, however. Coach Bob Newland indicated that 45 boys would attend as all members of the 1950 track squad are invited whether they be state champs or just the youths who made the best work hard to get there this season. Other Speakers Too It was not known Saturday afternoon just when Bowerman would arrive or how long he would stay. His talk will be the principal one of the banquet and others who will be called on to speak will include Ragsdale, Hedrick, Beckcn and Harris. The banquet will be a "stag" affair. Booster club members said. They explained that it was impossible to sell tickets far in advance or make reservations as the banquet was suggested just last Monday and plans were com pleted last Friday. The B title will be at stake in tonight's curtain raiser at 7:30 when Amity meets Drain, de fending champion. Roosevelt conquered Albany 13 to 1 and Eugene whacked Hillsboro 17 to 5. In the B divi sion. Drain scored a 19 to 0 shutout over Union and Amity turned back Aumsville, 4 to 3. BOWLING MATCHES HERE TODAY Medford men and women bowling teams will compete against similar groups from Klamath Falls. Ashland and Crescent City today, at the Med ford Bowling lanes starting at 2 p.m. During the afternoon an exhi bition on bowling will be given by Larry Laurent, Klamath Falls, who has put on the demonstra tions in the past for the Ameri can Bowling congress. CITY BOWLING LEAGUE Jim Morgan took high indi vidual game and high individual series honors with 256 and 635 respectively when the City Bowl ing league closed its season last Thursday night at the Medford Bowling lanes. The second half finished the season. Southern Oregon distributors took high team game and high team series with 917 and 2,638 re spectively. O., muscleman won the British amateur golf champion ship for the second time today when he crushed Dick Chapman of Pinehurst, N. C, 8 and 6. on the rugged royal and ancient club course. Stranahan, winner in 1948, easily ruined Chapman's fifth bid for the title. The Toledo strong boy lost only two holes, the first and 18th. After that, he consistently outdrove and out putted the former U. S. amateur champion. Stranahan was 7 up after 27 holes and closed out the match on the 30th. Cel., May 27 U.R University of Southern Califor nia powerful cinder squad won its 10th consecutive Pacific Coast conference track and field cham pionship today as it snowed un der the other nine schools in a lopsided meet. Led by the great hurler, Dick Attlesey and a big Indian, Don Newcomb, each of whom scored double wins, the Trojans ran up Chez Losing Pitcher, 3-2 Pullman. Wash.. May 27 (U.R) Washington State college today won the Pacific coast NCAA baseball championship by defeating Stanford univer sity. 8 to 5, in the second game of a two-out-of-three playoff here. Pullman, Wash.. May 27 (U.R) Washington State college and Stanford squared off again to day in the second game of the best of three series and a cougar win would give the northern di vision team the Pacific Coast conference baseball champion ship. Washington State racked up two home runs Friday to edge the Indians 3-2. Third Baseman Don Paul belt ed a 360-foot homer over the left field fence in the second inning for Washington State's first score. In the sixth, Rightfielder Gordon Brunswick sent another home run over the same spot with one man aboard. If Washington State wins to day's contest, the Cougars will have a chance to play in t h e N.C.A.A. playoffs at Omaha next month. A Stanford win today would compel a third contest Monday. No Records Broken In the finals today. In which the sprinters had to face a 10 mile wind, there was not a sin gle CC record tied or broken. However, the competition was keen all the way through. Three meet records were cracked in the preliminaries yesterday and one other tied. Other team scores: California 35; Oregon 31 15; Washington State 13; Washington 12; Oregon State 11 15; UCLA 7 15; Idaho 6, and Montana 5. A vastly underrated Univer sity of Oregon team almost com pletely stole the spotlight from the stars that had been highly touted before the meet. Fell Wins Close Bill Fell, the Webfoot's fine 100-yard dash man, won the cen tury by inches from favored Don Anderson of California. The time was a slow 9.9 seconds, but thn runners raced into a ten-mile an hour wind. The Oregon school scored an other upset in the 440-yard dash when Dave Honthorne came fly ing down the stretch to catch and pass Pitch Johnson of Stanford at the tape in a :48.7 race. Marysville Sale Denied by League San Francisco, May 27 (U.R) The Far West league offices de nied today rumors of a sale of the Marysville baseball club. League Secretary Len Monhei mer added that Frank Burrell of San Jose was recently made gen eral manager of the Marysville club and had been voted a league director. Monheimer said that the Brooklyn Dodgers have promised to help supply players to the locally-owned Marysville team. He said that opening day at tendance on April 26 was the best in the league's three year history, with official paid admis sion figures as follows. At Pittsburg, Medford: 914; at Willows, Redding: 1,118; at Reno, Eugene: 1,712, and at Marysville, Klamath Falls: 1,300 (approximate). Tornado Golf Team Second Medford placed second to Corvallis in the annual Wil lamette valley high school in vitational golf tournament at Corvallis Friday and Saturday. Eddie Oldfield with 78-77 155 for the two days had the best Medford high card, fol lowed by Phil Getchell with 77 79156, Justin Smith 84-82 166, Bob Shepherd 85-83168 and Bill McAllister 84-86170. Corvallis was first with a 398 toal Friday and a 405 Saturday, Medford had 407 each day, and Uni (Eugene) carded 410-424. Al Mundell of Uni high had 75 78 153 for medalist honors.
