1 Menfhonal Alcohol Kills Two Airmen Anchorage, Alaska, May 23 U.R) Two airmen were dead and 11 others hospitalized today as the result of a drinking party in which the beverage served was menthonal alcohol, a fluid used to start airplanes in cold weather. Elmendorf air force base pub lic information officers said the men, members of the 813rd en gineers' battalion, obtained the fluid from the battalion motor pool. Doctors said two of the hospi talized men were in critical con dition. They added that the full effects of drinking the fluid sometimes were not apparent for 24 to 48 hours. The compound was described as a combination of formalde hyde and methyl alcohol. For maldehyde is one of the chemi cals used in embalming. Names of the soldiers were withheld pending notification of next of kin. Tuesday, Mar U50 MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Warrant Awaiting Recovery of Flier Hood River, Ore., May 23 (U.R) Ferris McCoy, 40-year-old Portland resident, was in criti . cal condition in Hood River hos pital today suffering a skull fracture sustained when he crashed a light plane into an orchard near here Saturday. A warrant charging him with low and dangerous flying awaits McCoy's recovery, Sheriff R. L. Gillmouthe said. The pilot rented the craft at Beaverton and was buzzing the Hood Riv er area when it struck a utility pole and plunged to the ground about seven miles south of here. Gillmouthe said numerous complaints were telephoned in to his office before the crash. Hood River residents witnessed a 15 minute aerobatic exhibition in which McCoy ripped branch es from trees and dove low over homes before he crashed. McCoy's parents and his es tranged wife's family live here. Theater Man Refuses To Cut 'Bicycle Thief Portland, Ore., May 23 U.R) Martin Foster, manager of Port land's Guild theater, refused to day to give up his fight to show an uncut version of the acad emy award-winning Italian film, "The Bicycle Thief." Foster said he would hold a private showing of the film for ''the most prominent citizens of Portland" to see whether they believe it should be shown. The theater manager said he was also attempting to arrange a re-review of the picture by the municipal board of review, which last week banned its showing here unless certain scenes were cut. Foster said he would take the matter to the city council if the board refused to alter its deci sion. He refused to cut the "of fending" scenes. Hitch-Hiking Woman Winds Up in Jail Portland, Ore., May 23 (U.R) A woman en route to the city jail to visit her husband was jailed herself Monday. Officers said she tried to hitch a ride in a police car, violating Portland's anti-hitch-hiking ordinance. BUSINESS AS USUAL Johnston. R. I.
