May 20 U.R) University of Washington's Hus ky crew slid over the finish line a slim length ahead of the Uni versity of California shell today to win the Pacific coast collegi ate rowing championship. Veteran Coach Al Ulbrickson's eight drew even with the lead ing Bear crew at' the two-mile fiost and gradually boosted its ead in the final mile. Time for the three-mile test was 14 min utes 45.8 seconds. Washington previously had scored a victory in the two-mile freshman race when the Husky Frosh whipped the Bear Rookies by three lengths in 10 minutes 16.5 seconds. The California Jay vees won their test with the northerners by one length over the three-mile course. The time was 15 minutes 27.4 seconds. The host team took its first big seven track title since 1942 in the rain that muddied the field after Karnes set a mark of 4:12.6 compared with Cunning ham's time of 4:13.3. Nebraska piled up 1054 points. Colorado came in second i with 84' but the school's i George Holley set one of the three records of the day with a : javelin throw of 204 feet, two inches. Kansas finished In third with 83 U point!!. Kansas State fol lowed with 74's. Defending champion Missouri finished fourth with 57a,4 points, break ing its string of four straight track .titles. In Friday A" preliminaries Morris ran the low sucks in :22.3. .5 seconds under the old mark and .3 seconds slower than the national record. In the Sat urday final his time was :22.4. His brother, Frank was fourth In the event. Jack Places Third Jack was third in 100-yard dash and he teamed with Lou Bittle. Bill Buckingham and Bill Pruitt to win the half-mile relay in 1:31.8. Other Medford scorers were Warren Wendt tied for first in the pole vault at 12 feet; Lou Bittle third in the quarter-mile; D. C. Mills third in the javelin with a 188-foot toss; and Buck ingham fifth in the 220-yard dash and tied for fifth in the broad jump. Results of other southern Ore gon "A" schools were Ashland tied for eighth with 18 and Klamath Falls 22nd with eight counters. Grants Pass scored two. In the "B" class Gold Hill was seventh with Zi'i. Jackson ville and Phoenix also tallied. Rogue River Results For Rogue River Jim Boulter and Charles Jacobs were first and second in the high hurdles; Jacobs was fourth in the low hurdles; Boulter tied for fourth in the high jump; Pete Purricr was second in the shot put; Drumm was fourth in the broad jump and the relay team was sixth. Jacobs tied for first in the high jump. For Gold Hill, Joe Morgan won the shot put and was third in the discus; Newland tied for sixth in the pole vault and Don Harper was second in the jave lin. Thomas of Jacksonville finished in a dead heat for third in the 220-yard dash and the Phoenix relay team was fifth. New records were set in "A" class in both the high and low hurdles, and the half-mile. In January, 1948, Mace was ap luinted to his present position is chief biologist for the game ommission. )sfedf0iXuuw Oregon Takes North Division Track Meet Seattle, May 20 (U.R) Ore gon's high-powered track team lived up to expectations today to amass 58V4 points and easily outdistance the field in the northern division coast confer ence meet. New records were set In the discus and high hurdles by Mon tana's Dick Doyle and Jack Burke of Washington. Take Seven Firsts Undefeated i a dual-meet competition this yeac, the Web foot cindermcn took seven first places on the 15-event program. The Washington Huskies placed second with 36 points, followed by Washington State, 28; Idaho 17W; Oregon State, 16V4 and Montana State univer sity, 8V2. Burke's tour of the 120-yard high hurdles in :14.3 shattered a :14.4 mark set by Steve Ander son of Washington in 1930 and tied last year by WSC's Fran Polsfoot. Doyle tallied Montana's lone first place when he heaved the discus a tremendous 164.8 feet. The distance broke the northern division record of 157 feet two inches set by Ed Moller of Ore gon in 1929. It also smashed the 164 foot 24 inch stadium mark set by UCLA's Taylor Lewis last year. Fell Takes 100 Dath Oregon's Bill Fell, pre-meet spring favorite, copped the 100 yard dash in :09.7 but bowed out in the 220 to Craig wisemen.oi Washington.
