li ) FOURTEEN MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, May 14, .1850 Ml . VOTE for ANDREW L LINGER For the Nomination of JUSTICE OF THE PEACE MEDFORD DISTRICT, ON MAY 19 Democratic Party, and in Novcmbor for election I have been a resident taxpayer in Jackson County since 1923. Am a Veteran of the War with Spain and the only Veteran running for the office of Justice. Also, I am a lumberjack and work ing actively at it at the present time. So I feel justified In asking for the support of all Veterans, Loggers and Lumbermen. The U.S. Constitution says: "Ex cessive and Unreasonable Fines shall not be laid." None the less, they have been, and are, being laid. Truck Drivers, and Lumber Indus try Drivers in particular are, and have been for quite some time, persecuted by such 'encessive and unreasonable' fines. I promise to end such practices In to far as the statutory law will permit. Favoritism has been shown in Southern Oregon, also. That, too, shall cause. Atl shall stand equal In Justice Court. Positively no form of Favor itism shall prevail In any way. Equal Justice to all and favors to none shall be the hard and fast rule, and this rule shall not fait. Nor do I believe any man should be returned to offflce "on his record." Think well, Friends, Comrade Vet erans, and Fellow Workers, and let your conscience ba your guide. And to the business man let me say that the Small Claims Court shall be re-establi$hed and maintained at pro vided by law. Also, pensions to the aged, blind, end helpless with no restrictions what ever. Pd. Adv. yjTrfKniifiiDiiliili I I it It ft n .. ' T.m&Sit'M.. v't'&M'te-- "" 11"! Autopsy Scheduled For Unidentified Man Portland. Ore.. May 13 (U.R) The Multnomah county coron er's office today scheduled an autopsy in the death of an un identified man. about 60, found behind a billboard late Thurs day. An examination at the coun ty morgue revealed that the man suffered severe burns on his back which police believed were caused by steam or hot water. The body was rlad in a plaid shirt and dark trousers. and little or no crop. L. G. Gent- ner, entomologist at the south ern Oregon branch experiment station pointed out Saturday. As dollar-and-cents evidence of the value of lygus bug dust con trol. Gentner explained that in 1949 the average ladino clover seed yield on fields that were dusted with DDT was more than twice that of non-dusted fields. With alfalfa seed, it is impossible to produce a profitable crop when heavy infestations of lygus bugs are present and the same is true for lotus seed production. The ladino clover seed in crease resulting from dusting is a striking example of the value of pest control measures. In 1948 only a few acres in Josephine county were dusted for lygus bug control and the average yield of seed per acre in the county was 57 pounds. Money Return Told However, in 1949. 66 growers dusted a total of 852 acres with DDT and the average yield per acre of clean seed was 141 pounds. In contrast with this, 98 growers with 566 acres who did j not oust received an average ot only 63 pounds per acre. At the government support price of $1.25 per pound for seed, the in creased gross return to those who dusted was $97.50. After deduct ing $9.00 for cost of materials and two applications, there was still a net increase per acre of $88.50. At $88.50 net increase per acre , for the 1.418 acres of ladino clo ' ver seed grown in Josephine ! county in 1949, the increased in 1 come which might have been realized had the entire acreage been dusted, would have been ' $125,493. Comparable results ' were secured in Jackson county. Control Achieved ! Good control of lygus bugs on ; ladino clover was achieved last year with either two applications of 30 pounds of five per cent DiJi oust per acre, or one appli cation of 20 pounds of 10 per cent DDT dust. Applications can be made either by airplane or with ground dusters but should be made in the early morning or late evening when bees are not flying, to hold bee losses to a minimum. On alfalfa seed crops one or more applications of 20 pounds per acre of a dust containing 10 per cent DDT and 50 per cent sulfur are recommended for ly gus bug control. The sulfur is added as a harrassing agent. It forces the bugs to come out of protected spots on the plants and into DDT areas where contact with the dust will kill them. Dusts should be applied when the lygus bugs put in an appear ance in heavy numbers, usually about bloom time. Each applica tion will give protection for two or three weeks. Early morning or evening applications will cut bee losses from the dust and either airplane or ground dusters may be used. Lygus bugs will put in an ap pearance on lotus seed crops about the time bloom begins, probably late in May. One or more applications of 20 pounds of a dust containing 10 per cent dlh anct su per cent sultur are recommended. Meeting Called Dust applications should be timed by the individual growers to meet the heavy infestations of the bugs in their fields. To help growers time their dust applica tions. County Agent W, B. Tuck er has called a meeting of alfalfa, ladino clover, and lotus seed growers for Wednesday. May 17, at 8:30 p.m. (DST). at the court house auditorium, at which L. G. Gentner will show the method of checking fields to determine proper timing of dusting opera tions. It is impossible for the experi ment station and extension staffs to advise individual growers when ot dust. Therefore, it is im portant that seed growers intend ing to dust be present at this meeting to learn how to deter mine when dust should be ap plied. At this meeting H. H.
