WXTBBW MTOTOFD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, My II, 1950 Citizens of Umatilla Pleased At Chance To Hear President Umatilla, Ore., May 11 U.R The big black train from tne east steamed into the little rail road station here last night and the high school band began toot ling uncertainly the strains of "Hail to the unier. . "Where is he?" screamed young Boy scout in lull regalia as burly state police whipped around the end of the train with lengths of fresh manlla rope. "Stand back from the end of the train it may stoo sudden ly," shouted a man from the rear platform of the most famous railroad car In the country. Doors Swing Open Before the train stopped, the doors of the cars ahead swing open and photographers, report ers and secret service agents be gan bailing out. Experience en abled them to hit the roadbed at just about the point where the last car would come to a stop. "Stand back," roared the local chief of police as he braced against the rope, against which pushed the most active portion of the Umatilla population. As the brakes of the train grabbed harshly on the spinning wheels and steam hissed from the side of the train, there emerged through blue velvet curtains on the rear car the man everybody came to see the president of the United States. "Hi ya. Harry," shouted sev eral people in the crowd. "Pour it on," whooped one old man who looked like he hadn shaved in a month. President Grins The president grinned and went immediately into a hand waving oration about what he thought was best for the nation About six secret service agents edged out through the fringes of the crowd, not so much to pro tect the president as to keep the onlookers from getting too close to the crushing wheels of the big Baltimore and Ohio special from Washington. At Umatilla, as at every stop through the northwest. Mr. Tru man in a cracker-barrel style made famous in 1948, assured the people that he was not "run ning for anything. On this trip, Mr. Truman said, he is out to report to the people as their "hired man" in the White House. But, he added, in sotto oice that he d be back out here again "this season to do a little poll' ticking." Clad To Be In Umatilla The president ended up with how glad he was to be in Uma- tiiia. Then with a grand sweep of his left hand he brought out Ihc two star performers of his (rip his wife in a blue dress and his singing daughter, Mar garet, in a brilliant green gown. "Meet the boss." said the presi dent as Mrs. Truman, patting down her stylish hair-do came through the curtain. "And here's Margie," he said j with a perfect master of cere monies gesture toward the cur tain. Margaret emerged and gave her best concert stage wave. "Sing us a song, Margaret," , bellowed one man in a red lum berjack shirt from the track- fine. i But before Margaret could so much as peep the first bar from one of her favorite operatic arias ; the president, in the best carni-1 val manner, had waved her and Mrs. Truman back inside the blue curtain. An unkind white light from i overhead floods beat down on ! the chief executive's grey bair. "Thanks very much for your ( kind reception here, he said. A ; warning whistle tooted shrilly, sending the reporters and the secret service men hustling back aboard the train. The big diesel engines far ahead pulled away toward the next stop. 420,000 Ducks, Geese Killed by Oregonians Portland. Ore.. May 11 lU.R!
