Klamath Wins But Morris Of Medf ord 'Talk of Town' Klamath Falls high won the annual 20-30 club invitational track and field meet on its home oval yesterday but Jack Mor ris of second-place Medford was the talk of Pelican Town follow- in e the thinclad carnival. Klamath scored 190 56 Doints. Medford 136 13, Ash. land 46, Grants Pass 32 56 and Rogue River 14. Morris won the 100-yard dash and the ZOU-yard low hurles, - was on the second place relay team and tied for fifth in the broad jump to take individual scoring honors witn zj'.i tal lies. But it was the way speedy Jack ran his races that drew the plaudits. Sets New Records He set a new meet record of 22 6 seconds, .2 second less than the state record, in the low hur dles running both the prelimin ary heat and the finals in that time. The old mark of 23.4 sec onds was held jointly by Morris and Bob Redkey of Klamath, Morris toured the century. sprint in 9.8 seconds in the morning and 10 seconds flat in the afternoon. However, the s p e e-d mer chant's most amazing perform- ance was in the half-mile relay. A bad baton pass made a 20-yard deficit for the Medford anchor man to make up and Morris al most did it. Morris sprang out on the final leg m an almost su perhuman effort. He lacked but an inch in catching the Klam ath first place anchor youth at the tape. Other Medford first place winners were Frank Morris with a 15.4 seconds high hurldes. Warren Wendt with an 11-foot seven-inch pole vault, Lou Bit- tie with a 53.4 seconds 440-yara dash. Bill Buckingham with a 23.1 seconds 220-yard dash and D. C. Mills with a 161-foot, lOVi inch iavelin throw. Frank Morris was second in the low hurdles. Buckingham second in the broad jump and fourth in the century and Don Vincent second for Medford in the Javelin. Bateman tied for third for Medford in the pole vault. Roger Hobbs was fourth for the Tornado in the half-mile and fifth in the mile. Mills won fourth in the discus. Other Medford scorers were Bill Pruitt fourth in the 220, George Goodman fourth in the high jump, Leo Parker fifth in the shot put and Marshall Ferg sixth in the discus. On the relay team with Morris were Bittle, Pruitt and Buckingham. Bostock was fifth in the hurdle. Jim Gleason and Larue Smith were fifth and sixth in the 880, and Walker sixth in the 440. Medford won seven first places to only three for Klamath but the Pels piled up nine seconds and 10 thirds. Other participants in the meet were Bonanza, Henley, Lake view and Malin and Dunsmiur, Tulelake, Weed and Yreka, Cal. Three Deadlocked Lead Weathervane Golf Play Pebble Beach. Cal., Apr. 29 U.R) That rugged oT debbil. Pebble Beach, proved too tough for the ladies today and not a par was cracked anywhere as a trio of feminine golfers tied for the first-day leadership in the $17,000 cross-country Weather vane tournament. Knapp explained that quick listing of entries is needed so he as chairman of the meet can arrange for times of events, espe cially in case many prelims have to be run off. Prelims at 9:30 a.m. Preliminaries next Saturday will start at 9:30 a.m. on the Ashland high field with finals slated for 1:30 p.m. Knapp said that entries are expected from Gold Hill, Rogue River, Talent, Phoenix, Jacksonville, Butte Falls and St. Mary's (Medford). Only Prospect high probably will not send a squad. Gold Hill won the meet last year and also in 1948 but Knapp foresees this year's competition as much greater.
