Simpson said accurate indus try production figures are need ed by the association when the western lumber industry ap pears before congressional com mittees. "More important." he added, "we need authentic figures of the douglas fir region in our drive to get adequate freight car supply for this region." Decline Noted in Cancer Death Rate Portland, Ore., Apr. 27 (U.B A slight decline during 1949 in the rate of cancer deaths in Ore gon was voted today in the Ore gon health bulletin from a sum mary report prepared under the direction of Dr. Harold M. Erickson, state health officer. The state's cancer death rate during 1949 was 118 per 100,000 persons. While in 1948 the rate was 128 per 100,000, the bulle tin reported. A total of 1809 Ore gonians died from the disease last year, with male deaths num bering 938 and female deaths 871. As in past years, the cancer toll was heaviest in the older age groups, with the heaviest concen tration in the 50 to 69 age bracket which had 840 deaths in 1949. Pingle of the Mill Mar guest lodge at Butte Falls re turned recently from Los Ange les where she took part in the 10-day Sportsman's and Vaca tion show held in Gilmore sta dium. As an "ambassador of good will" from the Rogue valley, she took along literature from the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the highway depart ment and places of interest in the valley. Rocks Furniihtd The Rock Market of Eagle Point sent 14 large specimens of brightly colored jaspers, agates, petrified woods, also rhodenite and medfordite, all from Jack son county. Some of these were rough, others cut and polished, and they were used to enhance the setting of the miniature Mill Mar lodge, which was the cen tral theme of the Pingles' dis play. The Rock Market also fur nished S00 small specimens of local agate, medfordite, petrified woods and other similar material for Mrs. Pingle to give to those who were interested in the rocks of this area. The Treasure Trove of Shady Cove sent specimens of rare ore gonite and rogueite, and a tray map of Oregon. The House of Mystery was represented by lit erature. Displayed Slides In addition, Mrs. Pingle had albums of pictures and colored slides of the area, including pic tures of Crater lake. She reports that from this booth alone over 10,000 pieces of literature about this area were distributed. She states that Don Lane, secretary of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, who was in a booth at the opposite side of the stadium, sent or escorted many people to her booth. She reports that 8,500 persons signed for prizes which were given by Mill Mar lodge during the show. Mrs. Pingle plans to attend the vacation show to be held in Portland May 11, 12 and 13. Woman Seeks Support From Father-in-law Montreal, Que., Apr. 27 flJ.R) Mrs. Alexandra Margoglou Pez as of New York sought a court order today to have her multi millionaire Canadian father-in-law support her. Mrs. Pezas' action against Apostolos K. Pezas, Montreal shipping magnate, was instituted in superior court under a Quebec law that binds a man to support his daughter-in-law if she is de serted by his son. She testified that her husband, Igor, 30, deserted her last No vember after two years of mar riage and has not contributed to her support since then, one asked $2,000 monthly from the elder Pezas, claiming that he is worth $15 million. Harvey spoke Sunday at the first meet ing of the American Pension Committee club of Rogue River. Forty-nine persons met to organ ize the new club and they elect ed the following officers: Ed. Linderman, p r es I d e n t; Bob Knight, treasurer; Elsie Buck, secretary. The American Pension Committee clubs advocate all pensions be paid from a national general fund, according to Har vey, and they favor a pension such as a S60 minimum at the age of 60 years. He advised the group to learn where candidates stand on pension plans, and to vote for the best men rather than for the party. Harvey stated the club is the fifteenth oiganized in Oregon, and there are 75 members here. Next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, May 7, at 1:30 p. m. in Live Oak Grange hall. Mr., and Mrs. Homer Curry of Lebanon, Ore., visited friends here Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Curry was one of the first grade teachers in the city school last year. Latest member of the Hope Presbyterian choir is Barbara Feurerhelm who Joins her father and mother in this branch of the service to the church. Henry TJoelker returned Fri day from Oakland where he has been employed for several months. Clean-up-day at the Rogue River City park will be Satur day, April 29, instead of April 22 as was reported. Everyone is requested to help with the work and to bring a sack lunch and their own tools. Permission has been granted the city ball team to use the school athletic field for baseball games and they have asked per mission to erect a permanent score board. The award, which is part of the scouts' 1950 theme, "Strengthen the Arm of Liber ty," was instituted by national scout headquarters last fall. The Medford patrol is the first in the Crater Lake Area council to win the coveted honor. Patrols Earn Points Basis for the award, as ex plained by Scout Executive Cliff Hanson, is a three-month pro gram of advancement, camping, patrol organization, good turns and special activities. For each of these the patrol wins points, and to be eligible for the award a minimum of 750 points, out of a possible 1.000, must be earned. The Flying Eagle patrol was honored by the rest of the scouts of Troop 9 at a steak dinner Monday evening at the Girl scout day camp on Bear creek. Also honored was the Flaming Arrow patrol. The two units were winners of an intra-troop contest. Leader Given Credit Bill Roberts Is patrol leader of the Flying Eagle patrol, and Hanson said he deserved much credit for the excellent record of the patrol. Dr. William Rob erts is scoutmaster. Members of the patrol are now eligible to wear a newly-designed shield on their uniforms, and if during successive three month periods they can again earn 750 points, they will be able to have red and blue inner tags added to the shield. Grain Elevator Fire Causes Heavy Damage Wells, Minn., Apr. 27 0J.B A fire at a grain elevator and produce plant here caused dam age of more than $1 million, of ficials estimated today. The fire yesterday destroyed the Frank Bros, elevator, con taining 100,000 bushels of grain, and the storage and processing Dlant of Musser & Company, in cluding 15,000 starter turkeys.
