Machines can do everything
around an office now but wear
sweaters.
The southern California bus!'
ness show proved today that the
time is here when the bass can
arrive in the morning, open his
mail, tell one machine what to
write In reply, tell another to get
those orders out fast and then
relax with a diotating machine
on his knee.
What's more, the machines
never chew gum, get phone calls,
or skip out to the powder room.
First Appearance
A one-machine accounting de
partment that cost $5 million to
build but only $4,000 to buy is
making its first public appear
ance at the show under the
sponsorship of the National As
sociation of Cost Accountants.
"It adds, subtracts, multiplies,
divides, types, lists and posts," a
demonstrator said. "It even
makes up its own problems.
"The only thing it won't do

A push-button letter writer is
built on the theory that 90 per
cent of all business letters say
the same things. The owner
writes standard paragraphs to
fit all needs such as "settlement
of your account has not been

uses a dictating machine. It can't
spell yet but It can correct
his mistakes automatically.
"If he wants," the man from
the company added, "he can
hold the microphone on his
knee."
Another company offers an
automatic policeman. It claims
its time clock eliminates time
keepers, checkers, counters and
cheating. The boss also can fig'
ure out how much time is being
spent at the water cooler.
Most of these marvels are so
new they haven t been tested.
And a few business men were
skeptical.
"With me." said Movie Pro
ducer George Jessel, "a machine
will never replace the secre
tary."
Faulty Sanitation
Said Disease Cause
Portland, Ore., Apr. 27 (U.R)
Oregon's state board of health
reported today faulty sanitation
caused 267 cases of disease in
1949, with infectious hepatitis in
Douglas county last October and
November heading the list.
The Douglas county outbreak
was attributed to contamination
of a public school's water supply.
A turkey dinner servea in a
Klamath county school cafeteria
caused 45 cases of food poisoning
last November and ranked sec
ond in the board's list of disease
carriers.
No deaths occurred from
faulty sanitation but Dr. S. B.
Oseood. state epidenioloeist, said
deaths from such outbreaks do
occur.
So far this year, he said,
faulty sanitation has caused dis
ease outbreaks in a school cafe
teria, on a college campus, and
in three restaurants.

Joan Crawford, who used to
plunk down $250 for a bonnet
without bat-
ting a false
eyelash, swore
off hats today.
With four chil
dren, she says,
she can't af
ford them.
"I don't know
how other wom
en do it," the
glamour -queen
shrugged. "But
in our house,
shoes and cod

steak and milk take just about
all there is of the budget."
Her four moppets range from
10 to 7 to two three-year-olds,
and next month she's adopting
another five-year-old boy. When
the Crawford clan goes shopping
for shoes the bootery can stop
worrying about making a profit
for that week.
"I took 'em all down the other
day," she explained. "The three
younger kids had to have three
pairs each. And Tina, the old
est, needed four. That's 13 pairs
and they'll probably last about
six months."
You can see, she said, how
much that leaves for a new hat
for mama. She can't even
squeeze out change from her
four-figure paycheck by passing
her own shoes on to the 10-year-old.
Joan wears a size 41-2. Tina
wears a 6.
On Chapeau Wagon
Going on the chapeau wagon
might not be revolutionary for
some movie queens, but La
Crawford is the girl who used to
set the hat styles around this
town. She originated the pill box
and the droopy brim and a lot of
other fancy frills the females
stick on their noggins.
Nowadays it takes a lot of self
control every time she ankles
past a milliner's.
I adore bats," she sighed.
"Used to buy between 40 and 60
new ones every year. The aver
age price was $80 to $90. But
when I bought a fur hat
trimmed with mink, say the
price went up to $250. Just like
that!"
She hasn't had a flirt hat,
Miss Crawford added, since she
adopted her last two children.
"Last Easter I outfitted all
four in new clothes," she said.
"Cost me $39.95 each just for

Now that she's battling the
high cost of living bareheaded,
so to speak, Mis Crawford admit
ted it's "outrageous" the prices
some milliners get for a handful
of fluffy ribbons.a hunk o' felt,
and a feather.
"Beyond all reason," she said.
"As I look back on some of those
fantastic fees I used to pay I get
the shudders. Think of all the
milk that'd buy!"
Prison Group Finds
County Jail Unlit
Though Jackson county's jail
has been found by the federal
bureau of prisons to be one of
the best institutions of its type
in the state, it is still not consid
ered a fit place to detain delin
quent children. And during the
years l44 to IH1, the Oregon
Prison association discovered
545 children under 18 were held
in the county jail for lack of any
other kind of a detention facil
ity. Forty-one of these children
were from 7 to 13 years of age
and their offenses were general
ly minor ones.
In the state as a whole, the
association found that about
10,000 children had been held
in unfit county jails during the
five-year period. Only Multno
mah, Klamath and Lane coun
ties have detention homes spe
cifically designed for not only
holding children until their cases
are disposed of but for studying
them in a controlled environ
ment making a definite step
forward in their rehabilitation.
In a recent study, the Oregon
Prison association, with T. Law-
son McCall as president and
Mrs. Claire Argow as executive
secretary, has singled out Jack
son county as one of four Ore
gon counties whose records of

their need for a more humane
detention facility.
