FOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) Judges And Wives Guests In Medford; Roberts Are Hosts Supreme court Judges of the state, nere lor meeting oi me Southern Oregon Bar associa tion, and their wives were the Incentive yesterday for a num ber of pleasant social events. Mrs. Harry H. Belt, Mrs. James T. Brand and Mrs. Arthur D. Hay, all wives of supreme court judges, were honored at a bridge-tea Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs. George R. Roberts on Crown avenue. The tea table was centered with an arrangement of pinK camellias. Pouring were Mrs. A. A. Balderee of Grants Pass and Mrs. Evan Reames of Medford. In the early evening Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were hosts for a cocktail party honoring the jud ges and their wives, and the group then went on to the Rogue Valley Country club for a dinner. Chief Justice Hall S. Lusk and Judge Earl C. Latourette were also here. In addition to Judge Belt, Judge Brand and Judge Hay. David son of May, Tex., and Carl Whit ford were married at noon, Thursday, April 6, by W. H. Tucker, Justice of the peace, In the Jackson county courthouse. Mr. and Mrs. Whltford are re siding In tha A. A. Walker apart ment on Riverside avenue. Mr. Whltford is Gold Hill marshal and because of his present duties the couple plans to take a de ferred wedding trip in the early summer. Mr. and Mrs. Whltford are to ' be honored at an open house Monday, April 17, at the Dar danelles froca 7:30 until 10 p. m. Scottish Rite Women To Hold Initiation Central Point Installation of officers will be held bv Scottish Rite Women in the Central Point American Legion hall, Monday, April 17. College Student Chosen for Tour Roger Wolf, junior at College of the Pacific In Stockton, Cal., has been selected to make a "deputation tour'' for the music conservatory of the college the latter part of this month. The student, n son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Wolf, 718 West Fourth street. Is a pinnlst of consider able ability and will give piano recitals for schools and groups while on the tour. Young Wolf was recently made a member of the all-college honor society, and was also In vited to membership In Phi Mu Alpha, the honor music society for men. Justin Smith, named Thursday night tha 1950 "Woman of tha Year" by Medford Zonta club, it ihown receiving her award croll from Min Josephine Kirtley, a past president of Zonta. Mrs. Smith, senior high school teacher, was chosen for the award be cause of her outstanding activity tlons studies, conducted both with Medford Teacher Named Zonta Woman of the Year Mrs. Justin Smith has been named "Woman of the Year" by Med ford Zonta club in recognition for her endeavor in the field of in- ternational relations study. Mrs. at the club s annual formal banquet Thursday in the Jackson hotel and she was presented an award scroll and flowers. The award winner is secretly selected by a Zonta committee and Zonta club members are not eligible. The announcement and presen tation was made by Miss Jose phine Kirtley, past president of the club ana co-worner wun Mrs. Smith at Medford. senior high school where Mrs. Smith is instructor of civics and interna tional relations. In makine the announcement. Miss Kirtley told of Mrs. Smith's activities with the Medford branch of American Association of University Women, Medford League of Women Voters and other groups. The award winner helped to found the local units of both these organizations and is a past president of each. In addition she has led international relations study groups for both for several years, and has helped to train leaders for other groups. Mrs. Smith is a member of the Oregon committee for UNESCO and two years ago attended the convention of UNESCO held in San Francisco. As chairman of the international relations com mittee of Oregon Education as sociation she was largely re sponsible for founding the Ore- ?;on International R e 1 a 1 1 o ns' eague for senior high school students a few years ago and has been advisor of the Medford high school league. Along other lines, Mrs. Smith has been a member of the board of Jackson County Red Cross chapter for several years and gives indoctrination courses for me cnapter from time to time. Speaker for the award dinner was uonald McUougall, profes sor of history at Southern Ore gon college. He appropriately spoke on foreign policy, saying that he believed this country's policy of "containment" was in sufficient and too negative in character. He reviewed the period of founding of the world bank and establishment of the Marshall plan, pointing out that this had been quite successful in "containing" Russia as far as Europe is concerned, but that China had been lost to Russian communism. Dr. McDougall said he believed this negative "hold the line" pol icy will prove insufficient and that this country must promote an aggressive policy of aiding countries which may wish to be come democratic. "Europeans should be forced to relinquish their grip on colonies and we should aid those countries to be come democratic, if they desire," he stated. Brown has been appointed chairman of Lady Elks. Retiring chairman is Mrs. Arthur Hess. The group will meet Tuesday. April 18 at 2 p.m. in the Elks temple. Loeffler-Johnson Wedding Service Held in Medford Gold Hill Miss Bonnie Alice Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Johnson of Cen tral Point, and Lawrence Anton Loeffler, son of Mr. and Mrs, Louis Loeffler, of Blackwell Hill were married Friday, April 7, in a quiet double-ring cere mony held at 10 a.m. in Medford. Miss Theola Johnson, sister of the bride, and Joseph Loeffler. were attendants for the couple. The bride wore a powder blue suit with pink and grey acces sories and a corsage of white roses. Her sister wore a navy blue suit with white accessories and corsage. Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Loef fler also attended the wedding of their children. Mr. and Mrs. Loeffler took a short trip into California and are making their home on Blackwell hill. Both young people attend ed the Gold Hill high school and were graduates of the 1949 class A bridal shower was given Miss Johnson April 5 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Jenks, Blackwell hill, with Misses Mitzi Jenks and Bette Chishlom and Mrs. Jenks as hostesses. Society Members To Be Hostesses Members of St. Anne's Altar society of Sacred Heart Catholic church will be hostesses this afternoon for the coffee hour at the domiciliary center at Camp White. The Sunday afternoon coffee hour is held at frequent intervals under the sponsorship of the county Red Cross chapter. A program has been planned. Mrs. Edward C. Kelly will give a reading, Miss Barbara Nathan will sing, with Mrs. Beulah Nathan as accompanist, and Bruno Pellegrini will give piano numbers. About 30 hostesses will serve refreshments. The rites will be held at eight o'clock in Zion Lutheran church. Miss Smith, a Medford nurse, has been honored at a number of parties in recent weeks. First of these was given by Mrs. Edward Leach and Mrs. Belva Aiken at the Leach home on Bursell road. Dnd Mits Smith wa' presented a shower of mis cellaneous gifts for ner new home. Lodge To Receive Visit From Chief Mrs. Paul Myers of St. Helens, grand chief of Pythian Sisters for Oregon, who presided yes terday at a district meeting of the order in the Pythian build ing, has remained to make her official visit at a regular meet ing of the local lodge Tuesday, April 18. Main Senior High School Plans Open House Thursday Evening Parents of Medford high school students are invited to attend open house at the school Thursday, April 20 at 8 p.m., according to Lester Harris, prin cipal of the school. A half-hour program will take place in the auditorium and there will be gymnasium demonstrations. The parents are also invited to look over the building, in partic ular the new additions to the school which have been com pleted during the school year, and to meet members of the faculty. Refreshments will be served in the cafeteria, with teachers as hostesses.
