ID PCL Announces Batting Stars San Francisco, Apr. 12 (U.R) Buster Adams, the San Diego outfielder, is leading the Pacific Coast league regulars in hitting with a lusty mark of .421, ac cording to William Weiss, league statistician. Averages include games of Sunday, April 9. Another San Diego star. Max West, tops the loops in runs-bat-ted-in with 18 on a .400 average. Outfielder Roy Weatherly of Oakland leads in homers with five. Roy Welmaker, the crack young Negro hurler of the Padres, tops the pitching regu lars with four wins and no losses. Klepper and associ ates have leased Portland Mead ows for a 25-day horse racing program from May 13 to June 10 pending Oregon racing commis sion approval, officials at the First National Bank of Portland said today. Klepper Is former owner of the Portland baseball club and his group signed the lease with the bank, which bought the multi-million dollar track at a foreclosure sale last month. Klepper said eight races will be run daily except Saturday, when the schedule will call for nine events. The daily program will carry a minimum $500 purse, he said. Cincinnati Vs. Yanks In Exhibition Contest Cincinnati, Apr. 12 (U.R) The Cincinnati Reds make their first 1950 home appearance to day against the world champion New York Yankees. The Reds, who won 15 of 23 games in Florida, had lost four of their last seven games as they made their local bow. The Bos ton Braves rallied for six runs in the ninth inning yesterday to beat them, 10 to 6, and take the spring series, six games to four. Bill Bowerman Attends Convention at Boise Eugene, Apr. 12 Two mem bers of the Oregon coaching staff will play a prominent part in the northwest district con vention of the American Asso ciation for Health, Physical Edu cation and Recreation at Boise, Ida., today through April 15. Football Coach Jim Aiken and Track Coach Bill Bowerman will take part in the athletic section of the convention tomor row. Bowerman is chairman of the meeting and Aiken will be in the football section of the program. It was Yreka's 13th game against three for Phoenix high. Hutton, Furry and Keene shared pitching chores for Phoe nix and between them gave up eight hits. Phoenix could garner but a single blow off the offer ings of Yreka hurlers, that one being a scratch hit by Hite. 'Middleground' Places Second in Derby Test New York. Apr. 12 (U.R) Middleground. King ranch's Kentucky Derby hopeful who was beaten but not disgraced in his 1950 debut, will not run in the Experimental handicap No. 2 at Jamaica Saturday. Tex., to the brink of baseball oblivion. Tommy Henrich, one of the Yankees' famous old pros, will rejoin the team in Brooklyn next Friday and probably will be able to play against the Red Sox when the Yankees open their American league season in Bos ton. Dr. George Bennett, noted Johns Hopkins hospital surgeon, assured Henrich and the Yankee management yesterday that there was nothing seriously wrong with Tommy's ailing knee. Webfoot Track Squad To Take on Idahoans Eugene, Apr. 12 The highly regarded University of Oregon track and field squad gets its first dual meet test Saturday when it travels to the University of Idaho for the opening meet of the 1950 northern division season. Coach Bill Bowerman's talent loaded Ducks will be gunning for their third straight win over the Vandals and if the two squads have top weather condi tions a number of meet records may be broken. Clinton Charley Leads Pistol Shooting Here Clinton Charley took top hon ors in the regular competition of the Medford Rifle club's pistol division at Merrick's indoor range with a 252 total. Next were Cliff Friend with 252, Or ville Lengele 246, Roy Hewitt 236 and Loren croucher with 235. Norm Lucich won his first leg on the handicap trophy. Communist Troops Take British Barracks Taipei, Formosa, Apr. 12 UJ.PJ Nationalist sources said today that British authorities in Hong Kong have been informed by the Chinese communists that a bat tle is impending for the Chusan islands. The statement was made in connection with reports from Hong Kong that British authori ties there had refused permission for the 6,000-ton British ship An king to move foreigners from communist held Shanghai be cause of the "timing factor." Nationalists sources said the British may have been informed that the Anking might be sailing into an active fighting zone caused by a communist attempt to take the nationalist Chusan islands near Shanghai. Ponzi Top Billiads Player, Dies in East Philadelphia, Apr. 1 2 (U.R) Andrew Ponzi, 47, three-time holder of the world's pocket bil liards title, died in Hahnemann hospital yesterday of a heart ail ment. Ponzi, who started playing billiards as a boy to strengthen his right hand which was man gled by a trolly accident, suf fered a heart attack while visit ing his mother here two weeks ago. His home is in Salem, va. Grade School Tri-Meet Slated Here Thursday Lincoln. April 12, 1958 Senator Undergoes Operation for Tumor Washington, Apr. 12 U.R- Sen. Arthur H. Vendenberg's doctors were optimistic today that he would be out of the hos pital in eight to 12 days. The 66-year-old Michigan re publican underwent a success ful operation at Georgetown hos pital yesterday for removal of a tumor near his spinal cord. It was performed by Dr. O.
