Extension Service Leaf Hollar" Appearing In Strawberry Patches Strawberry leaf roller moths are now starting to appear in the strawberry patches. These will be followed in a couple of weeks by a crop of the leaf roller worms. Shortly after these worms start to feed they spin a web and pull the sides of the leaves together with the web bing to form protection for them. After the leaves have been rolled it is very difficult to get control. As the summer progresses, a second, and later, a third genera tion of moths will be produced and each one will be in greater numbers. If left unchecked, in fested strawberry patches will be completely defoliated. A spray applied during the next week would be a good start on the control of this pest. DDT will give good control and is perfectly safe to use at this time. If you have to buy a spray, then it would be preferable to buy methoxychlor. This is a relative ly non-poisonous material and while it does not give quite as good control as DDT, you can keep on using It right up until a few davs before harvest. A pound and a half of either of these materials to 100 gallons of water is sufficient. For home gardeners this amounts to a heaping tablespoon in two gal lons. The leaves of the plants should be thoroughly wet with the spray, and it would be desir able to make a repeat applica tion about two weeks after the first one. C. B.
