There were 13 unruffled ama teurs among the field of 65 men and veteran observers and writ ers said this might be the year for an amateur to take the cov eted title for the first time. The pressure is all on the pros who want to run their tourna ments themselves and reach a separatfbn agreement with the parent Professional Golfers' as sociation. Their political trou bles have not contributed to the sharpening of their game. On the other hand, the smart money boys who collect here in force every April have a hot hunch they believe that Law son Little, 38-year-old veteran and a member of the rebel group, can slip in and pick up the marbles. Other officers named were Hank Green, vice president; Hale Greenman, secretary, and Ned Liebman, treasurer. Named directors wera Al Bradford, E. E. McKinney, AI Babb, Harry Miller, Hugh Cole man and Miner Boshears. Opening Day Plans One of the biggest projects of the new club is to help put on the opening day game for the Medford Rogues (Nuggets) of the Far West Baseball league here Tuesday, May 2, when the local club plays Marysville. Members of this committee in clude McKinney, Boyd Wilson, Dick Olsson. Norm Neithammer and Coleman, all of Medford; Sam Hursh and Don Provost, Sr., both Ashland; John Wesley and Don Faber, both Central Point; Charles Schuber, Talent; Bob Harnish, Eagle Point, and Dewey Hill, Prospect. Meat Each Monday It was decided the club would meet every Monday night at 7:30 with the next session scheduled April 10 at the Holland hotel Gray room. Dues are $1 per year for each member were set. President Jerry Donovan of the Far West league who stopped here yesterday to address the meeting while returning south from a similar meeting held in Eugene, told of how much good an Athletics Booster club can do for sports. Cooperation of Rogue Valley Baseball, Inc., sponsors of the Rogue, was pledged by Business Manager Mel Carpenter who also told of ways the club could help local baseball. Suggestions For Help Suggestions of what the club could do to promote athletics included support of the Sum mer Baseball school in Medford, the Southern Oregon college in vitational basketball tourna ment, aiding opening day plans of the Rogues and encouraging baseball in general. . A. Z. "Tubby" Dean presided at the meeting until Stamper was elected president. Yearly dues were collected from those attending and a meeting of club officers was called for Friday noon. Busak, athletic coach at Lincoln grade school here and former semi pro baseball player in Ohio, was announced today by Business Manager Mel Carpenter of the Medford Rogues before he left for the spring training camp at Santa Maria. Carpenter with two station wagons and a jeep loaded with potential Rogues ballplayers and their equipment left about S a.m. today for the California city where training will open tomor row. The rest of the prospects are scheduled to arrive Monday, April 10. Wooster Collage Player Busak, a graduate of College of Wooster, Ohio, is S feet U inches tall and weighs 18S pounds. He bats lefthanded and throws righthanded with exper ience at both first base and as a catcher in back of him. The local grade school instruc tor played on the Ohio state championship Jf.A.B.F. team and a catcher for the College of Wooster baseball team in 1947-48-49. . Carpenter said that Busack will play with the Rogues when the local class D Far West league team is playing at home until school closes in June and then will be a member of the local professional club until school be gins in the fall. 22 Due at Camp Twenty-two youths were listed for the spring training camp at Santa Maria, including 11 pitch ers, four infielders, four out fielders, two catchers, and Coach John Chandler. Player Manager Tommy Nelson is included among the infielders. A complete list of those pros pects will be published later. Carpenter also explained that more possible Rogues players probably will be assigned to the Medford club by Idaho Falls of the Class C Pioneer league, a Giants farm, and by Seattle and Salem. April 8. 1950 Title Bouts Eyed For Amateur Card Eight four-round title matches will make up the amateur boxing card to be presented at the arm ory April 19, Promoters Larry Burdette and Owen Thomas of the Southern Oregon Boxing club have announced. The best talent available In southern Oregon will be pitted against the best available from Portland and the San Francisco bay area, the announcement said. In matches where southern Oregon boxers are sent again bav area ouailists. the niatclut will be for tjie northern Califor nia-southern Oregon title and where local boys take on Port- landers, the bouts will be for Oregon championships, the pro moters said.
