Take it from Vincent Siar- nicki, 4.000 volts of electricity can give you the same frantic thoughts. He was helping remove equip ment from an abandoned mine between Donora and Charleroi when a boom on his truck hit a high tension wire carrying the charge from an old mine trans former. Siarnicki gave a graphic description of his reactions. While still dazed with the shock, he was thrown to the ground with his right hand froz en to a piece of metal conduct ing the current. A loud roar fill ed his ears, and. as in a dream, he recalls, his whole life seem ed to flash past in an instant. "I thought of my wife and two children," Siarnicki remembers. and I was sure I was dying, Then, as though far in the dis tance, I could hear by buddies yelling for somebody to break me loose. After that it was Just blank." A flying dive by Art Camini, who was nearby, was credited wilh saving Siarnicki's life. Even after he was knocked free he didn't regain consciousness until companions had sppneci artificial respiration. Then he looked up and asked "What happened?" NOTK'F. Button Phone System Set For City Hall Use Installation of a button con trol telephone system to replace the switchboard for city offices in the city hall was begun Mon day, according to City Superin tendent Vernon Thorpe, He said that the button system will relieve the receptionist of much work, and should expedite telephone communication consid erably. She will handle calls from the outside only. The city offices will have three telephone trunks. The switchboard was Installed several months ago to replace the two trunk system with which buzzers were used to signal ex tensions. Local Fruit Crops Escape Serious Injury C. B. Cordy, county agent for horticulture, said today he has been reliably inlormed that tne stone fruit crops In the Yakima. Wash., area have been "wiped out" by last winter'i severe cold. Tree fruit crops in the Wenat chee and The Dalles arras have been seriously damaged, he re ported. Fortunately, Cordy said, or chards in Jackson county have so far escaped without commer cial injury. That's the opinion of Jacob J. Moliukcr. president of the Fur niture Exchange. The Exchange is a central market plare where over 500 manufacturers exhibit their wares exclusively to furni ture buyers. Some 10,000 buy ers attend its bi-annual markets, including many from foreign countries. "American manufacturers have the low price field com pletely sewn up and can skin tho Importers forty ways," Mel niker said. "There's a market here for imports, but they have to slay In the medium and high quality range and be cheaper in price." SOUTH RIVERSIDE Trees Hare Family Trees UP Correspondent Learns By William Warr.n United Press Correspondent Salem, Ore., Mar. 15 (U.R) Well, what do you know! Trees have family trees, too. The state forestry department came up this week with a new tab to add to the list of such tags as "Yield Tax," "Sustained Yields," "Intensive Utilization," "Economic Maturity," (there's nothing more callow than an adolescent tree), "Annual Incre ment" and "Forest Drain." (A tree shouldn't be a drip). The new tab is "Forest Gene tics." Homer Lyon, reforestation di rector for the state forester's of fice here, explained today that the application of forest genetics means the use of tree seed from the best tree strains in localities most adaptable to that particular seed. (Your name Is Cabot or Lodge, naturally Boston is the locality). Selection U Key In some instances, seed from an isolated or specially selected tree is used. Said Lyon: "Specific and accurate seed selection is the key to forest genetics." Lyons explained it this way: Farmers know all about using the best seed in their wheat and other farm crops because good seed means bigger crop and more money in your jeans come har vest time. Foresters have taken a cue from the farmers and are using only "certified" tree seed in their reforestation projects. In gathering certified seed, said Lyon, special attention is given to elevation, soil types, form of parent trees, local cli mate and other factors. Foresters in their research believe they have found that by taking seed from only the best or superior trees, and by taking into con sideration their location and cli mate, it will be possible event ually to improve the quality of Oregon's forests.
