Electric Impulse
Reveals Life Back
To Injured Person
Monessen, Pa. (U.R) A
drowning man isn't the only one
who, according to widespread
Deuet, thinks ot his home ana
family at the very end.
Take it from Vincent Siar-
nicki, 4.000 volts of electricity
can give you the same frantic
thoughts.
He was helping remove equip
ment from an abandoned mine
between Donora and Charleroi
when a boom on his truck hit a
high tension wire carrying the
charge from an old mine trans
former. Siarnicki gave a graphic
description of his reactions.
While still dazed with the
shock, he was thrown to the
ground with his right hand froz
en to a piece of metal conduct
ing the current. A loud roar fill
ed his ears, and. as in a dream,
he recalls, his whole life seem
ed to flash past in an instant.
"I thought of my wife and two
children," Siarnicki remembers.
and I was sure I was dying,
Then, as though far in the dis
tance, I could hear by buddies
yelling for somebody to break
me loose. After that it was Just
blank."
A flying dive by Art Camini,
who was nearby, was credited
wilh saving Siarnicki's life.
Even after he was knocked free
he didn't regain consciousness
until companions had sppneci
artificial respiration.
Then he looked up and asked
"What happened?"

Foreign Furniture
Too High Priced
Importer Claims
New York (U.R) If foreign
producers of home furnishings
want to compete in the American
market, they'll have to stick to
the medium of high quality
market.
That's the opinion of Jacob J.
Moliukcr. president of the Fur
niture Exchange. The Exchange
is a central market plare where
over 500 manufacturers exhibit
their wares exclusively to furni
ture buyers. Some 10,000 buy
ers attend its bi-annual markets,
including many from foreign
countries.
"American manufacturers
have the low price field com
pletely sewn up and can skin
tho Importers forty ways," Mel
niker said. "There's a market
here for imports, but they have
to slay In the medium and high
quality range and be cheaper in
price."
Price Too High
Melnlker 20 years arro used to
import needlepoint chairs from
Belgium.
"They cost $10 a piece in those
days and there was a market for
them, he said. ''Today they cost
$50 and there Is no market. If
that chair could be bought today
for around $20, they'd sell
more."
Melnlker said: "Sweden Is
sending a lot of modern furnl
ture Into this country. At first
they were out of proportion.
That is, they had the wrong di
mensions in some eases too low.
or too wide, or too narrow, or
too high. But they studied our
needs and now they are filling a
need in this market. The Swedes
seem to have discovered how to
dry wood properly. .

Well, what do you know! Trees
have family trees, too.
The state forestry department
came up this week with a new
tab to add to the list of such
tags as "Yield Tax," "Sustained
Yields," "Intensive Utilization,"
"Economic Maturity," (there's
nothing more callow than an
adolescent tree), "Annual Incre
ment" and "Forest Drain." (A
tree shouldn't be a drip).
The new tab is "Forest Gene
tics." Homer Lyon, reforestation di
rector for the state forester's of
fice here, explained today that
the application of forest genetics
means the use of tree seed from
the best tree strains in localities
most adaptable to that particular
seed.
(Your name Is Cabot or Lodge,
naturally Boston is the locality).
Selection U Key
In some instances, seed from
an isolated or specially selected
tree is used. Said Lyon: "Specific
and accurate seed selection is
the key to forest genetics."
Lyons explained it this way:
Farmers know all about using the
best seed in their wheat and
other farm crops because good
seed means bigger crop and more
money in your jeans come har
vest time. Foresters have taken
a cue from the farmers and are
using only "certified" tree seed
in their reforestation projects.
In gathering certified seed,
said Lyon, special attention is
given to elevation, soil types,
form of parent trees, local cli
mate and other factors. Foresters
in their research believe they
have found that by taking seed
from only the best or superior
trees, and by taking into con
sideration their location and cli
mate, it will be possible event
ually to improve the quality of
Oregon's forests. More aristo
cratic firs and pines. More
spruced up spruce.
Increase Residence
It may be possible also to In
crease resistance of the trees to
disease.
With the aid of research, it
may be possible some day, Lyon
said, to grow trees that will pro
duce knotless boards. The forest
products laboratory at Oregon
State college has discovered how
to make bees-wax without bees
from Douglas fir bark. The
forestry department suggests that
maybe the product should be
called bark-wax. At any rate this
wax is no worse than its bark.
