Toast masters Hear i AFL Teamsters Boss Winning Talk Records Medford Toastmastcrs, at their Monday evening meeting, heard wire recordings of prizewinning speeches given at the area speech contest held at Klamath Falls last week-end. Winner of the contest was Harry Skorry Jr., Ashland city attorney, who will represent this area in the state contests in Corvallis in May. Skerry's talk, "An Elephant's Epitaph," had to do with the re publican party. Second place winner was Bob Duncan, Med ford. Speakers from Klamath Falls, Ashland and Medford com peted in the contest. Speakers at last night's meet ing here included Bill Mantee, new member, making his "ice breaker" speech; Mr. Merle Wig gins, speaking on "Socialism": John Pletsch, who pointed out the habits of children in relation to strange environments, and George Distell, whose topic was "Gremlins," and who dealt with popular superstitions which, he said, are but contorted manifes tations of man's conscience. And, despite assurances from both sides that they "aren't look ing for a fight," Hawaii wonders whether its rolling cane fields and pineapple plantations are marked for jurisdictional battle grounds. Beck is in Hawaii primarily to check a rift in local AFL leader ship. His second mission is a sur vey of opportunities to add to teamster membership. He's hunting in a reserve that has belonged by default to his bitter enemv, Harry Bridges, president of the ILWU, since the left-wing union signed up some 30,000 key laborers in a post-war organizing surge. During a press conference. Beck said he was here to build up his own union and not to tear down anyone else's. He denied interest in sugar and pineapple and said he was shooting only for some 10,000 non-union island ers. CHANNEL TO LOOT East St. Louis, 111.
