Toast masters Hear i AFL Teamsters Boss
Winning Talk Records
Medford Toastmastcrs, at their
Monday evening meeting, heard
wire recordings of prizewinning
speeches given at the area speech
contest held at Klamath Falls
last week-end. Winner of the
contest was Harry Skorry Jr.,
Ashland city attorney, who will
represent this area in the state
contests in Corvallis in May.
Skerry's talk, "An Elephant's
Epitaph," had to do with the re
publican party. Second place
winner was Bob Duncan, Med
ford. Speakers from Klamath
Falls, Ashland and Medford com
peted in the contest.
Speakers at last night's meet
ing here included Bill Mantee,
new member, making his "ice
breaker" speech; Mr. Merle Wig
gins, speaking on "Socialism":
John Pletsch, who pointed out
the habits of children in relation
to strange environments, and
George Distell, whose topic was
"Gremlins," and who dealt with
popular superstitions which, he
said, are but contorted manifes
tations of man's conscience.

Turns Eye To Hawaii
Honolulu, Mar. 14 (U.R)
Dave Beck, burly western boss
of the AFL Teamsters, is looking
over the island stronghold of an
old enemy, the International
Longshoremen's and Warehouse
men's union.
And, despite assurances from
both sides that they "aren't look
ing for a fight," Hawaii wonders
whether its rolling cane fields
and pineapple plantations are
marked for jurisdictional battle
grounds. Beck is in Hawaii primarily to
check a rift in local AFL leader
ship. His second mission is a sur
vey of opportunities to add to
teamster membership.
He's hunting in a reserve that
has belonged by default to his
bitter enemv, Harry Bridges,
president of the ILWU, since the
left-wing union signed up some
30,000 key laborers in a post-war
organizing surge.
During a press conference.
Beck said he was here to build
up his own union and not to tear
down anyone else's. He denied
interest in sugar and pineapple
and said he was shooting only
for some 10,000 non-union island

they stole $500 from a tavern

forced an unprotected basement

the tavern by crawling through
a furnace hot air pipe.
