Miss Blum and Miss Delores Beardon received two-year awards; Miss Peters. Miss Pittman and Mis Joyce Bearden, one-year awards. Miss Brittsan received a one-year head majorette award. Band and orchestra members receiving one-bar letters for 1,000 points earned were Bob Bates, Delores Bearden, Bill Bradford, Doug Bran nock, Jacqule Butts, Gayle Christlicb, Bob Fry, Shirley Garris, Chcrie Knudson, Marie Laird, Jerry Lauchner. Earl Newman, Vivian Powell, Ellen Raws-tern. Dick Gordon, Ed Cowell, Margaret Huson, Robene Starcher and Gerry Johnson. Two-bar lsttcrs went to Ron nie Adkins, Carol Clark, Dale Davis, David Davis, Giles Ham den. Jackie Henbest, Kathleen Hicks, Beverley Hogensen, Roila Jones, Walter Kendall, Kay Mc Clanahan, Marilyn Miller, Leroy Reel, Anita Shaw, Delores Smy He, Maureen Rice and Dick Fan-ger. Receiving three-bar letters were Wendell Bateman. Kath leen Jones, Bernie Rawstern, Shirlcv Rice. Jim and Lee Spen cer and Sharon Tuffs, while four- bar letters went to Nancy Ad ams, Vaughn warn, uaie cover- stone, Dave Griflitn. vernon Lehman and Nancy Pierce. Roger Hogstrom, Keith Mir ick and Joyce Montgomery re ceived five-bar letters, and Hen ry Padgham, Loretta Rush and Frances Zimbleman, six-bar let ters. The band presented a half- hour concert at the Elks' temple March 2. Afterwards the band members retired to the party lounge for dancing and refreshments. Production dates of the senior play. "The Importance of Being Earnest, have been set is March 23 and 24. George Weir and Donna Mack head the cast, and rehearsals have been under way for some time. Miss Dorothy Wilson, foreign language teacher, was serenad ed on her birthday, March 1, by the fifth period vocal class. Starting March 2 all study halls were temporarily vacated by the seniors who made below passing grades or missed the test which determines their knowl edge of English. In place of study ball, these seniors will attend remedial English classes taught by Miss Delie Whitenant until they can pass the required test. Cardinal Spellman Talks With Pope Pius Vatican City, Mar. 4 J.R Archbishop Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York met Pope Pius XII in private audience Fri day and church quarters specu lated they may have discussed the possible appointment of a new U. S. diplomatic represent ative to the Vatican. Ore., Mar. 4 (U.PJ The veterans administration said todav aDDroximately 70 em ployees will be dismissed from its Oregon staffs as part of a na tional economy move. Charles Langdon, manager of the agency's regional office, said he expected to receive insiruc tions Monday regarding sever ance of employees at veterans hosDitals in Portland and Rose- burg and the domiciliary center at Mcdiord. He said he expected to reduce the staff of the regional oince o 35 or 40 employees and medical services will be decreased for the first time since the war. Paul Halton. manager of the Camp White veterans administra tion domiciliary center, said Sat urday he had as yet received no word of what effect the new economy order may have upon the center staff. He is expecting instructions from Washington, D. C, on Monday. New Developments In Weapons To Be Told A detailed description of new developments in American army weapons and equipment and the manner of their employment will be presented to local mem bers of the organized reserve corps Monday at 7:30 p. m. by Lt. Col. Stanley R. Lauferski, a member of Lt. Gen. Weidcrmey er's sixth army headquarters. He will discuss the three types of American divisions, infantry, armored and airborne, from the standpoint of changes since the end of World War II. The logis tical division, a new division in the United States armed forces, and the one to which most ac tive reservists in southern Ore gon are assigned, will also be I covered to show its organization j and mission.
